Mass Incarceration: Why Does The U.S. Jail So Many People?
Video Overview & Insights
The U.S. incarcerates more people than any other country in the world. With 2.2 million people behind bars, and millions more on probation or parole, 1 in 35 American adults is caught up in the prison system. AJ+ teamed up with The Marshall Project to examine why.
We’re not free at all because of the system

1 out of 3 african americans will be incarcerated in their existence. Man, I did not think the statistics could be so low...my bad
sentences are three times longer than Germany. Inmates make parts for big corporations...Hitler did it in WW II, but the numbers
we're not so high. So, if Hitler could do it, wow why not America. Germans did get the u.s. to the moon and let's not forget are
"free elections."

Hypercapitalism at work. Dysfunctional US!
@xane4101Because it serves two purposes. It is a multi billion dollar business that in some cases, supports an entire region. And two, it is used to destroy the Black American man, his family, and his community. In other words, the WS blueprint.
@cliftonconnor9389they treat 17 yr olds as babies and 14 year olds as adults.
@ephebo2029Probably because there is massive amount of shitty people in the US
@MYInteriorArchitectGovernment also gets to disarm many people.
@Chuck-mm2ypShe right. Prison makes money off taxes, prisoners, ect. Population control.
@Chuck-mm2ypBecause most people are trash. There should be a lot more in prison.
@SweetDreamsYouCantResistCrimes against children so horrible. Yes, yet so is homeless children
@henrycole8705Excellent video. Lots of great sources and information!
@touristykindaguyGotta love Joe Biden's 94 Crime Bill - he did that one right. Not sure why Trump will be releasing criminals. That is just dumb -
@rabidfarmer9765Mass incarceration is about money!
@shirleysmith2522Corporations and private institutions are not the people and are a threat to America and the world
@heysiritellmeacoolprofilen7296Don't commit any crimes, and you will never see prison !
@mralmnthwyfemnin5783It actually only jails people who are serial criminals and has never convicted anyone because of their skin tone. Those who complain otherwise are criminals or their family who raised them to be that way.
@tpolerex7282Because America is ran by PIRATES (thieves) since 1492. America is built on THEFT and VIOLENCE especially towards other nations (military force and laws) to pillage especially the poor even the rich. I’m aboriginal so I know this. They make the schools like jails prisons too!
@Love4theDivineSick
@engineered-mindWhy do we have so many incarcerated? Lazy parents who don't teach their kids consequences so that as adults they learn consequences. Lazy parents who refuse to teach their kids not to do crimes! If you're a 10 year old and you steal yeah you need to go to jail NOT be sympathized with. If that same 10 year old broke into your house and killed a family member would you say yeah let him out on bail! Kids aren't dumb. They can be taught! As a kid we had a family down the street and they had a girl and boy. The boy got arrested for breaking into houses! How old was he? 9! The girl? She never bothered anyone. Never broke into homes. Same family. The kid refused to learn. He had a record as long as his arm and I hope he never got bail.
Criminals always get sympathy kids and adults. They refuse to learn. No one should be released on bail whatever your ability to put up bail if you keep getting arrested! And we can't use the poverty excuse because many in poverty don't do crimes! And let's stop using the race card! If you as a parent refuse to teach your kids better so as adults they don't hurt anyone if one group is incarcerated more than others then their parents are at fault! Why are there so many incarcerated? Simple! They think they're entitled to crime on others repeatedly. They put themselves in jail by their actions! I'm White and raised Middle Class in the 60's and 70's. I have a brother. My parents had an expression. You get yourself in trouble with the law you get yourself out. My parents would provide NO lawyers. NO bail. NO sympathy! NO visits. My parents taught my brother and I and if we screwed up WE did it not our parents. My brother and I screwed up we got consequences by our parents. My brother and I never went bad. As much as my parents could afford to bail us out and get lawyers do whatever they wouldn't. My brother and I would be on our own. Criminals don't deserve sympathy adult OR kid! And if they're not taught better then when they screw up hurting others and jailed and left there? Tough! Being a victim of crime you're in a cell without bars! It's about time victims of crime get the sympathy!
Hope you all are doing well.
@veramclaughlin4849Urgh of course racism has a role to play too ☹️😕
Land of the free eh?
Hmmm still not for some
Oh and you have Ronald Reagan to thank for those 1986 draconian drug laws. The 5 year minimum in place because of that 😒
Solitary doesn't help to say the least
Because they profit from it
@ViC.C-i2pPart of what irks me about our "tough on crime" policies is the ineffective and contradictory toll it takes on America's impovershed population. People are staples to the board as soon as they foul up. Even when I was in the military, I'd constantly hear my seniors utter the phrase "...can't get away with that nowadays". I have no idea why its neccesary for drug users and pedophiles to be in the system. I believe dangerous or troubled people should be monitored and helped, but not always incarcerated. We already spend the tax dollars on these individuals as is, why is it better to lock every person up to steals a penny when we can keep them monitored and still working? Too many people wind up in prison here for petty crimes that can be easily avoided if anyone in this damn country practiced common sense and situational awareness. Seriously, there isn't any emphasis on helping people anymore. Everyone is either a good person, or a bad person. Even our political system emulated that black/white perspective. This partial philosophy that people in America practice is worse than any virus.
@danc5644Do what they do in the phillipines. Allow the people to murder drug dealers.
After all drug dealers r really murderers anyways selling poison and a slow or sometimes rapid death to their victims while profiting from it.
Just let the people who want to protect their neighborhood take care of it.
Self defense self prservation whatever u want to call it but make an example like he has there.
This is deception and treason of us American people, but They keep us so busy we don't even know what's going on or have time to be educated about it properly
@shanefisher6605Wall Street even has bonds on police brutality so they make money on that as well that is why police can beat people up for no reason and even kill them
@shanefisher6605My comment will probably get taken down because they want to keep America dumb to this!
@shanefisher6605Judges and attorneys and the court system make money when people go to JAIL and get into the system it's a POLITICAL GREED problem due to deception of the population by creating a birth certificate/aka stock certificate! to put on Wall Street FOR THEM TO MANAGE AND MANIPULATE that you don't even know about, Even after you're born
@shanefisher6605Money , of course!
@kayeodom1937Take guns away and end the killing! Stop making excuses for doing crime! Stop blaming color or finances. Lots of people of both don't do crime!
@lisanidog8178My parents taught my brother and I not to take what's not ours. When my brother broke a window while playing baseball in the street what happened? Mom marched my brother to that house to apologize and he didn't see his allowance until it paid for a replacement!
My parents made it very clear to my brother and I that if you get in trouble with the law you get yourself out. That meant they would NOT provide a lawyer, don't bother to call us, you mess up you pay with jail. Well we never got into trouble!
Don't give me this crap that poverty breeds crime. Lots of people in poverty DON'T do crime! Less education? Well my paternal grandfather had to drop out of school in 5th grade to work. He knew better than to steal or break into places to steal money to help the family. He never went to junior high, high school or college. And he lived in the Depression. Did they do crime as an excuse? No!
You don't get incarcerated because you're a model citizen and it's time we stop the excuses! It's time children were taught right from wrong so as adults they don't screw up!
Stop using education or color or poverty as excuses! We expect teachers to be baby sitters. If parents are too damn busy to raise their kids right then they shouldn't have them!
We glorify violence and guns and go oh my goodness another shooting! Take away guns! Don't take your gun away you say? Then stop using them for every little grievance because guns are for one thing. To kill! It doesn't matter whether you're a law abiding or criminal. Guns are used to kill! And if you're taught not to steal, break into homes, not intimidate people you have no need for a gun!
These are solutions no one will do! Easier to make excuses!
So sick of this complaint! Mass incarceration keeps criminals from hurting people! Want to complain that certain groups are incarcerated more? Well how about blaming parents for NOT teaching right from wrong and that there consequences!
@lisanidog8178American culture
@simonpedersen9940Wow. Just, wow. It's like it's a crime to be black in America.
@khorkienjoo5292Mass incarceration is definitely sad, but I’ve never heard a realistic argument about an alternative way to deal with criminals. You have to commit a pretty serious crime, or several crimes to get sent to prison

@brightandwoke9582because something something freedom
@maythesciencebewithyouIsaiah 101 Woe to those who enact unjust statutes and issue oppressive decrees, 2to deprive the poor of fair treatment and withhold justice from the oppressed of My people, to make widows their prey and orphans their plunder.…
@CenturionGuardsUKThe U.S. doesn't incarcerate anybody. Individuals incarcerate themselves by way of their chosen actions. Freedom abounds for those intelligent enough to embrace it. EVERYONE has total freedom to choose to reject drug use, a life of crime, and the moronic mentalities and recalcitrant attitudes that pave the way to incarceration in the first place. I recommend to all the whiners and complainers that they invoke their right to freedom, as outlined above, and then encourage others to as well. I have. It's very, very easy and it pays fantastic dividends in the grand scheme of life!
@ems3832jail is one of the five fundamental forces of accountability, and it comes in three forms. federal state and county. the president can only pardon federal crimes.
@jarrodyuki7081the United States under “correctional supervision” exceeded that of Stalin Russia.
US prison system “Over all, there are now more people under ‘correctional supervision’ in America–more than 6.9 million–
According to the straight numbers, the Stalin system did not exceed the US 6.9 million during the years of the Great Terror. In 1938, there were 2.7 million
America isn't free and is not the best country to live in.
