Actually, the Gateway of India was to welcome the British Reigning monarchs King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. Unfortunately, construction of the monument was not completed until 1934. The British East India Company did not rule India after 1874. An Act of Parliament transfered the rule to the British Monarchy from that time until 1947.
An almost unknown fact is that the Gateway of India was actually the brainchild and financed by the wealthy philanthropic Jewish Sassoon family.

@FLC_OfficialThe British East India Company was dissolved in 1874, so it had nothing to do with the Gateway of India arch. It was built to commemorate the crowning of George V as Emperor of India. By that time all the lands of the EIC had been taken over by the Crown.
