New York’s Orthodox Jewish City: Inside Brooklyn’s Crown Heights

Video Overview & Insights

In the United States, they make up a very visible yet inaccessible community: the ultra-Orthodox Jews. Most of the 200,000-strong community live in New York and are flag bearers for the more conservative and religious branch of Judaism. Recognisable by their outfits, they have a strict dress code and live by even stricter rules. We gained exclusive access to their world and heard from a family expelled from the community for breaking those rules.

The men are chugging vodka and the women are separated "behind a screen". No thanks.

— @patdavey2690

Orthodox Jews live in a vacuum on the fringes of the modern world. They marry solely within their community and – as contraception is banned in most circumstances – their families often exceed six children. Their entire life is determined by religion, following judaic practices which have not changed since the 18th century. The sexes are strictly segregated. They speak Yiddish, the language of Eastern European Jews before the Second World War. Within the most rigorous branches, men devote their entire lives to the study of religion and women only work in mainstream society to provide for the family’s needs. Children are educated in Orthodox schools, which focus mainly on religious education. We follow the Katz family, with their nine children, during their daily life as they prepare for Easter celebrations.

In New York, ultra-Orthodox Jews are long established and accepted but, as their community spreads out, tensions are starting to appear. In Monroe, a small town in the New York suburbs, which is now home to thousands of Hasidic Jews, their presence and lifestyle is challenging local communities. Signs telling people to dress modestly in streets where Orthodox Jews live have not been well received. As for those who make efforts to abandon this tight-knit community, they pay a heavy price: rejection by their closest friends and family and the discovery of a modern world which they scarcely know.

It seems some people are trying to justify Israel’s genocide of Palestinians but what are the key Jewish religious arguments against slaughtering innocent children and other people?

The same group of Jews have also settled in England and have done the same takeover of areas and have destroyed peoples day-to-day living while they live lavish lifestyles and don’t go to work

I respect all religions as an American as I watch this documentary. I see a lot of traditions that the Muslims carry with covering of their hair elbows beneath this knees covered. My question is why are we so critical about Islamic teachings it looks to me they almost have the same values men and women separate. Have lots of children. Why is there a double standard

Does your love of God extend to the love, respect, and trust of His son, Jesus Christ? Read the 53rd chapter of the book of Isaiah in which this Jewish profit rightly predicted the coming of the Jewish Messiah, Jesus. Today's Orthodox Jews may profess to love God but they lack a full understanding of his true greatness. Because of mankind's sin, God had to provide a substitute atonement so that all could enter heaven death. But because we are all sinful (from the greatest to the least of sins) we are in need of a savior to prevent us to be separated from God in eternity (Hell). To many Jews are like the Pharisees and Sadducees of Jesus' day - professing to be righteous but filled with sin without moving toward repentance and a change of heart.
Some of the Jews that I know, including myself, have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior and will enter eternity with Him at the end of this earthly life. Where will you spend eternity? Believe in the words of John 3:16 and you will have no doubt of your final destination. Do not delay because tomorrow is not promised to anyone.

Interesting! They don’t like western value besides their own way but they love all the Gov benefits! Why not just live in Israel, the promise land by GOD! Religion is an excuse to control people generation by generation…

Rabbi Sneerson owns a sex toy business with his daughter this tells you alot about Jews. They sell and promote sinful stuff to non jews but forbid jews to partake because they hate non jews. The reasson for the holocaust is making more sense i can only imagine how they where back in the 30s and 40s . The book burning was sinful books like books featuring trans and gay things thats jews wrote to propagantise the non jews

Binle says do not be drunk-sin. Would God like their behavior and attitudes? They are cultist. I think they're blasphemous. Repetitive chants. They believe they are chosen and better than others but they're not Jesus grafted gentiles and was angry with jews. I can see why Jesus flipped over the moneychangers tables at synogues. Jesus knew the hearts and minds of Jews and he tried to teach them but they decides to crucify Him

Didn't realize they had such a large presence in Brunoy, France. Apparently they have a significant Yeshiva there. I used to often see a Hasidic woman and her children when I lived in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, my employer (who was Jewish but not Hasidic) used to talk to her. Don't think I ever saw the husband. I was accustomed to really only seeing Hasidim living in large groups in the US, not one family alone. Interesting that a whole class of students would come to the US for that birthday celebration.

Low-key antisemitic presentation. Is this BBC? They are always presenting things in
" we are just showing facts, not our fault these Jews are xxx (always negative)".

Tells us women have to dress modestly but leaving out men do, as well. Saying women celebrate behind tinted windows but not showing their celebration is just as boisterous. Telling us women are not obligated to pray, implying they are left out, when the reason is the Hasidic belief is that women are naturally spiritually closer to God and therefore don't need the obligation- but of course, they do pray, just not as often. Their role is much more than being a wife and mother. That's ludicrous. Many work outside the home.

Understand Mike not wanting his neighborhood to change, but would he be saying this type of stuff on camera if it was black people moving in?

These people don't blow up anything, don't preach hatred of America, don't try to convert anyone. Leave them be.
