Oli Marmol was granted his extension because he sucks. Why waste the money and the fan appeal by bringing in some combination of Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina, Adam Wainwright and/or Chris Carpenter, to run a team that on paper would struggle if they played in AAA? Let Marmol do his usual horrible job managing this horrible team while President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom continues to get the advanced training facilities up and running in the minors and to stockpile draft picks, which one assumes by the superior talent Boston (and Tampa Bay) amassed under his guidance will be vastly better than the scrubs John Mozeliak constantly over-coveted. Then after the forthcoming work stoppage which will be caused by billionaires arguing with millionaires on things every other professional sports league figured out how to work under decades ago (ie: a salary cap (need it), a salary floor (need it), schedule length (leave it), spring training length (shorten it, but run the Jayson Stark version of the World Baseball Classic every year, and expand it too), they can fire Marmol and bring in one of the heroes of the 2000s to run the club just as it turns the corner and the Cardinals return to their usual place of being a well ran, fundamentally sound franchise again.

And while I'm thinking about it, Jim Edmonds would be a great bench coach or hitting coach, and ANYBODY would be an improvement from Jeff Albert, easily the least qualified coach in the history of the Cardinals, and yes, I know he's not the hitting coach anymore but damn he sucks. Another brilliant Mozeliak hire was Daniel Nicolaisen, who quit his role as the Cardinals Assistant Hitting Coach to return to his previous job, coaching Women's Softball at Ole Miss. I'm not even joking. No offense to women softball players, I've watched your games and there is talent in the sport, but if I'm Jordan Walker or Nolan Gorman, is a women's softball coach and Jeff Albert, who played one season in the Frontier League in 2003 before disappearing from organized baseball for 4 years. He returned inexplicably to AA Shreveport, where he went 0-6. His career batting line is .143/.208/.190 derived from 21 AB over 11 games, amassing a 3 hits, 1 double, 2 runs, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 4 K, and 1 GIDP. THAT'S who brought the proud Cardinals franchise down: John Mozeliak and his menagerie of sock puppets in Marmol, Nicolaisen and Albert.

If you watched the Redbirds regularly as I have anyone would have seen this coming back in 2018-2019. The team wouldn't resign big dollar free agents or they'd sign players on "promise" after a solid rookie campaign rather than results over the six years of team control they already had, Paul DeJong for example. Mozeliak was adamant that the club adhere to his strict dictates on the use of analytics to the exclusion of any and all viewpoints derived form personal experience. The team had a half-dozen or more Hall of Fame players who would regularly visit the clubhouse: Stan Musial, Red Schoendienst, Lou Brock, Ted Simmons, Bob Gibson, Whitey Herzog, Tony LaRussa, Ozzie Smith, Scott Roland and many really good former players such as Jim Edmonds (who is amazing at spotting pitchers tipping pitches), Willie McGee (2x batting champion, 1x MVP, multiple Gold Gloves and All Star appearances, was not allowed to discuss hitting or fielding that wasn't included on the analytics spreadsheets, as a paid coach at the time!), Chris Carpenter, Ray Lankford, etc. None of those guys with YEARS of combined experience and success at the highest level of their sport could have anything of value to impart to the up-and-coming "talent" Mozeliak drafted? The Analytics Machine 9000 had that all covered, did it? If there was an official National Baseball Hall of Shame, John Mozeliak would be a charter member, right alongside Angel Hernandez and Ben Chapman (I'm not even going to discuss the various sexual deviants in baseball, there's no Hall of Fame in Hell). Mozeliak managed to turn the DeWitt family that owns the team into cheapskates akin to the ownership Scrooges we see in Pittsburgh or Miami. They used to invest in the roster, but until Mozeliak left they slowly stopped investing in the necessary areas to ensure a competitive product. I don't know if he had compromising photos or practiced posy-hypnotic suggestion on the owners, but the fall from grace accelerated every year.

One last thought on Marmol--the team can't stand him. I've been following the club regularly since 1982. When a player was interviewed after the game, they ALWAYS gave credit to their skipper. "We trust Whitey...," "Torre knows what it takes to win...," "Tony is a genius..." Even Mike Matheny and Mike Shildt (especially Shildt--his players seemed to really like him, though his fellow coaches maybe not so much) were given credit in the postgame interviews. Marmol? Nothing. Maybe crickets once summer is in full swing. Until all things Mozeliak are gone from the thought process and daily grind at Busch Stadium, the Cardinals will be lucky to be a .500 ballclub.

I’ve never seen a worse prediction for the Rangers considering they had the best defensive season in MLB history just last season. 🤦🏼‍♂️

This is why these guys will never be credible in my book. “Astros will never be better than the Tigers.” They had the same number of wins last year with team whose UCLs, bones, hands, and legs were all held together by Elmers glue and tied together with silly string with at one point six of their regular starters, including pitchers, were hurt and Hader being shut down for the last month and a half. Tigers were fully healthy. They never once brought that up, so I’m bringing it up for these long neck yankees.
