Reala Ace is Actually Reala Good.
Video Overview & Insights
My current thoughts on the Reala Ace film simulation.
Hi ! may I know was the nostalgic negative in 2:42 straight out from the camera without adjusting anything like WB, sharpness…etc?
Answer to the question at 5:33:
Classic Chrome (left), Reala Ace (right).
Astia is the most beautiful simulation. really gorgeous colors and best for shooting portraits, it's basically classic chrome with more color which is how I got over my classic chrome fatigue, and you can get nice results messing with the tone curve.. Classic Neg is the other banger - the only simulation that truly looks like film out of the box. I just bump the color.

Reala Ace is so great in so many ways, but I find the reds shift too pink. for instance, the reds in stop sigs that are deeper and more crimson or red objects that are slightly orange will show up much more pink in Reala Ace. Using Chrome Effect to Strong helps deepen the reds but they still shift too pink.

Something i noticed , doing a normal Colour space tranform from Flog to rec 709 and putting it side by side with reala ace , they almost identical , since learning that i now use reala ace as my main video profile along with F log 2 if High dynamic range scene.

0:00 - reala ace
0:57 - my problem w/the standard color sims
The constant eyeroll annoys me, bro watch your video before you upload. Unwatchable because of this.

This might be an unpopular opinion but as for me, I do a lot video works and graduation photoshoots with my XH2s and I find that Reala Ace color is very similar to Sony standard color (especially when I shoot as a B-cam). So Reala Ace is a way to go when I want a more natural look for either professional work or everyday photoshoot. For me personally, I definitely agree with the statement that Provia looks and feels more like a smartphone camera😔

Thanks for the video. Just wondering if you use it just as is , or do you use colour shift etc. ? Thanks 👍

This is very interesting. I left Fujifilm before Reala Ace because there was no real neutral color accurate Film Simulation and I don't want to boot up LR to edit raws. I am surprised to hear you describe Classic Chrome as neither boring nor with not too much character. I feel like the stylized color of Classic Chrome was always too brown-red and not true to life outside of greens for foliage. Plus, the sky always was a bit too green by default. Reala Ace looks like it could have been the one to keep me with Fujifilm, just a little too late for me.
@-greyThis is my favourite fujifilm simulation.
@diannerobbins3498Dang I didn’t know my beloved Provia was thought of this way 😂
@RandomKeebsNice comparisons, I appreciate it. 👍
@edwardmartinsphotographyJust turned on Reala Ace last month and gonna try it. I use provia almost exclusively, as my main subject is family with young and I don't need the nostalgic vibes the other profiles offer. But I do agree provia is too generic. Hopefully Reala Ace would offer a touch of uniqueness provia didn't offer.
I do shoot in RAW + JPEG, so using Fujifilm x raw studio, I can still turn all of them to another simulation when I still have the camera. So probably that's what I'm gonna do for some photos.
I love classic chrome and nostalgic neg the most. I think you’re right about cc being more flexible than nn. I need to mess with reala a bit!
@tommedvedichGood video. Thanks for the content.
@bigbarkingdog2010I like your perspective of a having a style without it looking too generic or smartphone-like. Some of the other simulations do a strong definite cast to them, so I will definitely try out Reala Ace on your recommendation 🎉
@RikMaxSpeedPersonally I think the ProNegs are better in general. You either want a more contrasty image or softer, and the ProNegs provides that; Reala Ace is stuck in the middle, not really giving the great results of the ProNegs.
RA is like Provia in it's lack of commitment on looking really good at certain things and full send effort on looking "decent" for every situation on average, but ironically just having two sets of the same colors and tones is actually better for more situations; ProNegs are unbeatable in their all-purpose goodness, don't sleep on the GOATs!
I like ProNeg High more for a clean somewhat color accurate look. I just prefer the much stronger contrast of ProNeg High.
@Tankado79reala ace is muted provia but still retains some pop since provia is so saturated already. you probably like it because classic chrome is also muted with hard tonalities
@kuroexmachinacorn ball
@kuroexmachinaLots of people shot people (document family, or personal/professional portraits, or candid street photography…). There you can see if colors are ok/natural/reasonable or not. Because a building is a building, we dont know if colors are unnatural an unreasonable 😕 we dont know the building, we cannot judge.
@TungstenOvergaardLightroom camera profiles aren't the same as the out of camera jpegs. Camera manufacturers use proprietary algorithms for processing and what you have on lightroom is just adobe's best bet at how those profiles were created. If all of these comparisons were of the lightroom profiles, then the conclusion is that you like the lightroom reala ace, not the fujifilm reala ace.
My next point would be about editing with such a shallow software as lightroom. It really isn't at all technical and it's quite bad for colour grading, because it has so few tools for it. Take the following case for example, which could be happening inside the camera, but you will never replicate in lightroom: make the darker tone of blue (-2ev away from middle grey) more magenta and more saturated, make the middle grey tone of blue more saturated and +0.7ev lighter, and also make the lightest tone (+3ev from middle grey) of blue more cyan and less saturated. These are the terms you operate with when using a real editing software with the real colour grading tools, not the 3y+ playtoy with a handful of sliders like lightroom. The best you can do in that software is use R and G and B curves to achieve a grading like that, but they're not designed for the real world application as you'd have trouble even locating the middle grey on there nevermind getting enough versatility in the curve control.
Reala's whites are whiter, they pop out more, like a person with whitened teeth
@red9350Yep both helpful and enjoyable. Astia is my standard Fuji SIM. But when I got my xs20 I really enjoyed the reala ace. I think I'll get it another go for a while
@76stepsthanks for the comparisons :)
@raspberrypeelReala Ace has turned into my Classic Chrome. I haven't found something I couldn't shoot with it, although in some cases something else may be better.
@spamllamaI guess this is the point at which I blame youtube for presenting identical images described as different.
@winc06Thanks for a very timely prompt. Having just replaced my X-E4 with an X-E5 as my every day carry, I’m very tempted to turn the film simulation dial from my current, Provia based, custom settings to Reala Ace, to see how well it fares with the late summer and early autumn conditions here in the UK.
@neilford5262Yes, we need some Reala appreciation video. I like it too.
@bassyeyAstia is my go-to simulation for family. You are correct about the blue. I learned it the hard way at the beach when I discovered that the blue was just too much.
