Rising prices force mother to get creative with her shopping

Video Overview & Insights

Each trip to the grocery store is becoming more expensive for Florida mother Kiana Powell. Cristian Benavides reports on how she's trying to stretch her budget.

All together folks thank you President Chump for no new wars and lower inflation! President Chump is bullshiting Americans that he was going to make America great again.

It seems that the cost of gas would not be prudent to go to different stores.

It’s getting out of control. We started going to the food bank twice a month this year. Normally we are first in line, but last week there were 3 massive lines before opening. Everyone is hurting. I worry for us all 😢

Things that have helped us is not buying individualy packaged snacks, paper goods other than necessary toilet paper and soft drinks / sports drinks. We have also switch to cheaper brands or store brands of the things were used to having. Also higher fat percentage ground beef and turkey and just draining out as much fat as I can. I find alot of budget friendly recipes on you tube and tictok - I try to follow those pages for ideas and inspiration.

I do well with my groceries because I no longer eat meat in the United States. If you knew of the hormones of pesticides, you would not eat meat in the United States. The United States approved the lab meat and are not forced to place that on the package, are you aware of that?
Miniform countries include European countries refuse to accept me from the United States. So if you find ways to work around, not eating meat, your bill will be reduced. Also stop by and all these processed items. Make sure everything is whole fruit and vegetable. Be careful of those coffee, creamers, that are nothing but gums and oils. Read your packaging.

I love beans, sweet potatoes, spinach, and homemade cornbread. I live a fresh salad with chopped apples and nuts. I make my own homemade dressing. I sautéed mushrooms as my meat substitute. Certain mushrooms you can place some a batter and fry them and they taste like meat. There are so many things you can do to reduce your bill. I meal prep once a week. I do enough to eat for the week and I’m able to put some of it in the freezer. I buy fresh fruit and I chopped some of it and place it in the freezer for smoothies. There are ways to reduce your bill and eat healthier.

Increased $50 🧐
When my now adult children were at home in 2022… my grocery bill for all of us was $500.
They are now out of the house and it’s just my youngest and myself and my grocery bill has doubled 😒

Only buy name brand if you have a coupon and it’s cheaper than the store brand.

Leave it to Bari Weiss to spread the myth that the affordability crisis isn’t happening. that it’s all just a state of mind and we would be out of it if we just clipped coupons or some BS

I agree with that 50 dollars minimum increase

I'm post bariatric sleeve

My bill went from around 90 to 40 now to 110 at minimum not including gas since trump took office

Gas went from 40 for 20 to 106 for 20

Stop buying junk like gatorade and processed foods. Eat beans and rice, spaghetti, soups and stews. Fill your pantry with staples and make your own bread, cookies, and snacks. Eggs are cheap...drink water, tea, and coffee. Buy in season veggies and fruits. Carrots, onions, and apples are all relatively cheap.

Where is all this increase in groceries at. Our groceries in our area have not increased at all, and the stores are running ridiculous sales on all meats. I live in the capital area of Charleston, WV. I do follow sales, though.

Rewards programs have taken over the commercial world because they make more by selling our data. Everything is moving in that direction: Offer little incentives to consumers while shifting the system into a worsening position for the consumer and a better one for the owners.

Why are they having farmers destroy their peach trees then? We throw away so much food because it's not perfect and don't get me started about expiration dates. The whole system is broken.

Remember that just because there are deal hacks and ways to save money in order to eat and survive, DOESN'T mean that we should HAVE to. We also could save thousands on meat if we just became cannibals. We still need to change laws and stomp out corporate greed so that we can survive rather than needing more people to adopt tips and hacks to stay at their same level of comfortability.

@sparklekpadeh3382

Something I've noticed is the value/practicality of coupons now. Far fewer food coupons, many more "buy 2, get 1 free", smaller discounts. After scouring this week's selection, I only had 5 coupons I could use. Stores are cutting sales, too.

@vanessal9931

All name maybe buy generic and no single serves? That'd help

@kathleenwallace8252

I feel like people should buy necessary items first, save then buy some wants. Chips and Gatorade, that's $20 worth of unnecessary items. Sorry, but I'm done feeling sorry for those making poor decisions with their money! Change your spending and budgeting habits and you will see change !

We live in area of Texas we don't have variety of grocery stores. All we have are Walmart, brookshires, and Piggly wiggly. Piggly wiggly is very high. Brookshires some.
They do have good sales.
When I do grocery shopping if brookshires has sales of grocery items we use yes n also shopping Walmart.
This week for example 2lb velvetta block cheese on sale $5.99 and other groceries.

What is odd some Walmarts are cheaper than other Walmart

@kimtodd1803

Shopping in the Walmart app to pick up, there's manufacturer coupons on certain food items n etc..bis it fair between shopping online n saving few dollars n not getting same offer inside shopping . No
