SCP Secret Laboratory Is Not The Game It Used To Be
Video Overview & Insights
SCP Secret Laboratory has been out for nearly 8 whole years now and recent years has seen it change drastically compared to what it used to be. I miss the older version, I miss the old vision for the game and realism slop ain’t it chief.
Shoutout to all The Finals appreciators in the comment section, I see you!🫡
This video has been an absolute NIGHTMARE to make and I’ve even gone back and forth about uploading this, but I owe it to myself and others to get this out there. I can also finally claim back my SSD now!

I recently booted it up after a couple years and what the FUCK did they do to heavy??? its so different and wonky I hate it.
2:01 The lighting and atmosphere
5:48 The absence of horror
40:18 I came to see what changed , but now I see it was just me. I'm a 2.3k hour sweat now and now it can't stop , it's a snow balling thing. I'm sorry
11:23 The transformation of gameplay
17:41 Infrequent AND rushed updates
WHAT DO YOU MEAN SCPS CANT ONE SHOT ANYMORE??????? I haven't touched this game in like 5 years now and seeing a few videos made me excited cuz I liked the graphics and the new rooms. But why are the SCPs so nerfed?? I remember playing as the shy guy and being a force of nature that can eradicate a whole MTF spawn almost instantly, I remember when seeing the doctor meant that you had to run with all you had because even going near him would mean instant death, and I remember larry being like the final boss of the game. And there were even times where MTF had to team up with the chaos insurgency just to survive the SCPs. I just don't understand how SCPs became such an afterthought when the game is named after them??
27:27 The state of content creation
30:38 What others think
the whole video is just bitching about new updates and hating on good players
48:42 Miscellaneous things I miss
54:52 Conclusion
Honestly, I think SCP is just cursed for video games. Containment Breach was great, 5K has potential but the devs are like dads who went out for milk meanwhile SL had the potential and lost it. Then name literally any other SCP game and most regular people have never even heard of it (could include 087 in that too)...
Special thanks to all who contributed their thoughts:
@IceyManDude
Back in 2017 I used to be a huge scp fan and of course I downloaded the game the day it came out. Felt like we finally had a proper multiplayer scp game and didn't have to depend on gmod breach or remakes on roblox. It was so much fun! because back then it truly was just a multiplayer scp game. I forgot about the game in 2020, downloaded it a few days ago (June 2026 as I'm typing) and holy shit it really isn't the game I used to play and love. Its feels like they completely removed the actual scp aspect, and it turned into a monsters vs humans shooter game. Back then it truly felt like you were in the site from scp:cb. It was simpler, but I think that's what made it scary. Rounds could last a long time because it wasn't just a rushed shooter game, it was really immersive in the sense that the player (whether you're class d, scp, or mtf etc) really felt like you were stuck in a crazy facility, trying to survive.

@Starcatplays
I miss prime scp sl
@scpWyatt
@TinyyTonyy
updating game just for the sake of updating to make game seem alive
@FinnSCP
@Skillz2Play
if they bring back the femur breaker ill be back on their side slowdown the game play and bring that back and ill be able to ignore most the flaws the game has
@Red
@StarStalker28
tbh this might be a hot take but i wouldnt mind if we got aton of new scps but like keep it random ya know that way the game would still feel like its old self but with new things that could happen
Also thank you to those who made an appearance:
Joe
i honestly dislike the change to heavy containment it use to be simple and easy to navigate it still kinda is but alot less so to be completely honest the only areas that needed changes in my opinion was entrance zone and surface and you can make an arguement surface is fine as is
@Chatter-Hat
@FishyDaFaun
Your views on content, creator expectations are sad try living in the real world sometime

Honestly I hate the new balancing of the game. I miss the times where as a guard/scientist you were nervous after a couple of minutes because you didnt know whether Chaos spawned or if respawn even happened yet. Only to then hear the heavy stomping of the insurgents' boots in the hallways. Announcing Chaos spawn has genuinely made the game so much less fun. And dont get me started on how they made 079 a literal god while making every other SCP mid af. I feel like SCPs arent very scary, and 079 isnt "oh god a monster, I have to play this well or I die" and is just "great im dead within the next 30 seconds guaranteed"

@spatulalemmy5131for me the game is too dark , dunno why my screen just shows dark half the time , dunno if it is a more recent change or just a my pc issue , even with max brightness i can't see shit in half the hallways
@kennymansy2270Honestly something I think needs addressing in games as a whole needs to be this shift in lighting dynamics because for some most if not all games over the years have slowly shifted from having diverse lighting in regards to both the colours displayed as well as shadows and dark spots such that now most lighting in games is this bright kinda annoying system that gives no hiding spots, leaves things “textured”but feels like there’s actually less, and most of this lighting is generic white light with the occasional yellow light and it won’t be a worn out or dingy yellow but a clean and fresh one. If I were to take a guess it’s because of this shift from time willing to do single matches or be even remotely bored on account of short attention spans so how do devs counter this they simply make it so you can’t hide nearly as easily if at all and allowing free reign of instantly wiping anyone and everyone in this failed utopian style lighting.
For SL I wasn’t even aware horror stings existed in it and I don’t see why they shouldn’t be in the game, sure it might be a bit of jumpscare horror logic but it’s that or give them an actual threat to your existence and they won’t do that because it’d be unbalanced to do(also a problem with all games at this point honestly cause there are some things in games that I don’t think should be balanced as their design is to be a forced unifier or force you to run the hell away for safety).
Final thing I’d say is I don’t actually get why from an out of game perspective why someone escaping should be benefiting your team twice instead of it giving your team the bonus of you now being deployed as a better armed personnel who can fight for them but giving the other side more incentive to quickly get reinforcements on the ground, or in a more understandable language, if a CD escapes uncuffed and then deploys as a CI logically the foundation would want to get MTF on the ground faster because they’re losing test subjects who can may or may not leak information as well as there now being more forces destabilising the situation whilst vice versa if FP are escaping it signals to the CI that stuff is becoming worse and they have a better chance to “liberate” CD and SCP’s for their own purposes and hell this would help with the issue you had with the whole speedrunning your escape as quite simply you can escape and help your team short term but there’s greater odds that your counter force will proceed to start deploying and causing problems. That said that in of itself will cause problems and a massive shift in game play probably leaning to more early game combat and even less peace deals and truces being sorted out than is already lack luster.
I played the game a ton in 2019. This video was a flashbang.
Like when you see what happened to that one dude you knew back in highschool.
I'm honestly so sick of companies like Northwood and Affray Interactive trying so hard to make woke slop. Can we just have something goofy and fun?
@sylv256Wtf man. They actually ruined peak
@xernax1841The devs could benefit from taking notes on Lethal Company, which is what SL could have been.
Lethal Company is a horror game that balances being goofy at the same time, it creates space to roleplay, sure people could play it competitively, but there is a bigger focus on the social aspects and teamwork and most of the content being added are focused on the esoteric objects or monsters
Okay I agree with everything except the content creation part and it's not because I like Jukeing
@thepickle5214I found your video when I looked at some criticism of SCP:SL on youtube, because I started playing SL yesterday after 3+ years on break to get some have some fun and messing around. Holy smokes many things were unrecognizable and SCP-173... what did they do to the peanut T_T As for SCPs in general the fact none of them can insta-kill (if I heard it right from you) except for peanut really takes the fear out... Like if I were to play scientist or D-class I wouldn't be so scared anymore when wandering. Besides this makes SCP-049 lorewise inaccurate cause his touch skin to skin instant kills someone. Thanks for highlighting the issue of the current state of SL. >_<
@Huseyin_Gazithis video has 10k likes 😭😭😭
@jorkimusThey only just recently added more elevators to Surface which really didn't change anything cause you can still Camp them so IDK why they'd pretend to care about Camping. Funny part is Light has a room with nades that you can Camp and kill the SCP on low pop. And the reason I know this is cause I died to it cause the shit melee hitboxes and even though I hit the guard I was Doctor so he just gets to pretend I don't exist. The Horror is gone. The new Cards are ugly so now I can only play Chaos Theory if I even want to play this slop.
@NinjothThere’s no way we’re out here calling retard the “r-slur” you had me in the first half but now you’re beginning to sound way to wingy
@yo_moe-1341i came across the game this week and i love it, tho i agree with the graphics
Edit: Why did the game use to be better
They really need to officially rerelease a separate version of this game on megapatch 2 update... the game currently is just buns and not fun.
@MKHoTHoTI came back to this game after like 6 years and audibly let out a "somethings off". Haven't came back after that
@amuchlessmortalbeing268I agree with you, SCP SL used to be very horror, spooky and eerie back then to the point when I become NTF or Chaos or Guard or D CLASS that Im afraid to be walking alone and asking where the heck is my teammate and once you hear larry walking sound from far away that already scare the shit out of you. And now in 2026 SCP SL is just not Eerie and spooky anymore, it just goofy and becoming Call of duty in industrial and meeting monster. I said it industrial because back then the facility is design to look like laboratory, but now the facility look like some kind of industrial factory ! what the hell is happening to SCP SL.
@TheDoomer-m3iI don't understand why they want to move away from Containment Breach so much. Shouldn't Secret Laboratory be an homage to SCP itself, including the most important piece of media that made SCP itself so relevant? (and yes let's not lie, nearly everyone first heard of SCP from Containment Breach)
I don't see the point of running away from that at all
SCP SL looks different than in the past and that is good, i litterally came back to this Game cause they updated the combat sistem, It was a knightmare
@darthjarjarjarthe ntf heli pilot and ci driver are still old models too
@RacingBro17All I want is an 049 update.
@BicycleWizardAs someone who knows basically nothing about guns and has never played a shooter, the change in focus has slowly changed this from "a fun experience I might like to try sometime and make friends" to "guns vs. magic battle royale with toxic sweats."
@GIRGHGH"he's a mexican, and black, im taking the shot" holy shit my sides hurt from laughing
@kael070This video aged like rotten milk....
For those who live under a rock, literally 1-3 months after this video they released update 14.2 which massively updated the lighting (making everything much darker) AND they added back horror stingers and chase themes to the SCPs...
Also, you complain how making things "realistic" is slowing down updates, then at 24:02 you nit-pick that the fake doorways aren't "realistic" because they are fake and don't lead anywhere.....
I started playing yesterday and am completely lost
@SageGilbert191EWWW what the fuck are those new key cards (I haven't played for a while)
@meictic5621Honestly, I think bridging the gap between SCPs and Humans socially would help. - I think the Plague Doctor should be able to talk, since he's able to in his entry. It would just be a tool to allow for some more fun experiences. - Maybe give him some kind of light echo effect on his speech so that people can tell through doors and such, since he isn't supposed to be "tricking" people, but could still negotiate.
I know that "Talking" used to be 939's thing, and I do think it was a shame that it was entirely replaced with the soundboard system, but I don't think an SCP being able to talk should be exclusive to a single one. A big part of SCP is that not all of them are simply killing machines, they're sentient. 939's special thing should be having the soundboard IN ADDITION to being able to talk without a filter, which would allow room for other scps to have proxy chat (with a filter) with players, without it feeling like something is being taken away from 939.
The old SCP Secret Laboratory days were the best ones when every D-Class looked like Kaif
@Hollaritehorror stingers
being added back
the skeleton
was temporary 😱😱
So basically, don't get back into SL if the last time i played was years ago. Too bad i actually really like SL
@OrionEJI think the game is still fun in its own right. Old versions were a NIGHTMARE to play. Horrid balancing, way to easy to stall, etc.
@dropspark9468New bad old good just play scp containment breach multiplayer
@Sn1srIronic how the playerbase is bigoted despite the scp community being gay af.
@JvneValkaIm working on developing a multiplayer SCP game inspired by secret labs. I wanted to leave comments like this to gather opinions on the idea and see if it is something people will be interested in. There are 3 zones at the beginning of the game where the different roles start. Chaos / MTF start in the zone closest to exit and must fight to complete an objective. Movement, shooting, leaning, crouching is much more realistic with a need for flashlights / NVG. Each team has different classes, like medic, rifleman, sapper, and squad leader, etc. Classes are more than just having a better gun.
Armor, health, and a down but not out system will function similar to arc raiders, but if your armor breaks or you run out of meds you need to find different stations to resupply. One SCP can conditionally become playable in zone 1, to assist whoever releases it. Scientists will start in a laboratory (zone 2) where power is inactive and 1 SCP is active. They need to collect samples by completing puzzles strewn about, and have a special NVG headset that can stun the SCP, but needs to be recharged periodically. The idea is a survival horror-esque / dead by daylight / outlast trials type zone. Scientists cannot leave without having samples. D-class and guards will spawn in zone 3, with a very special, very hard to destroy SCP. Their only objective is to survive until zone 3 is opened. They cannot kill the SCP, and need to slow it down and hide as best they can by using various tools and SCP items. Once zone 1 objective is complete, zone 2 is opened and a timer starts on zone 3, allowing exit. Whichever team won zone 1 now has to rescue or kill the scientists / D-class and fight the zone 2 SCP, who will get new abilities during this point. Once the timer is up in zone 3, the SCP will adapt and breach into zone 2, becoming much more powerful based on how many kills it secured during zone 3. A ticket respawn system will be in place based on objectives completed, and players will respawn as zone 1 winning squads (chaos / MTF). The game ends when the zone 3 scp either kills all players, or they manage to incapacitate it. Each role spawns in a unique zone with drastically different playstyles (tactical team shooter, survival horror, high octane chase). Zone 1 is incentivized to work quickly, to ensure scientists / d-class survive for the final fight, because objectives = respawn tickets. I think the difference in roles will provide a lot more replayability, and the objectives are more concise and high stakes. The final fight will operate similar to a resident evil boss fight / EVOLVE monster fight. Making 4 different games in one is proving to be a balancing nightmare though, so again im wondering if this concept even sounds fun.
Old graphics were so much better
