Small Art Studio Tour! Organisation & Layout Tips, Working Comfortably, Equipment Recommendations
Video Overview & Insights
I'm often asked about my studio setup on social media, so I've created a tour video to share some insights!
Great video! I got quite a few useful ideas. Thank you!
If you're new here, my name is Shaymus and I'm an artist & art tutor. Setting up an art studio can be confusing, so I'm here to help. My studio is is quite small but works given all of the materials I need - this video will walk you through all of my storage & equipment recommendations.
Everything here, except for my Canon Pro-1000 printer which was generously gifted by my grandma, has been funded through my online art business, which I started after graduating in 2019. Proof that it's possible!

I'm so impressed with the way you explain in videos like this one and the art fundamentals video! The way you speak is pleasant in my opinion as it's well-paced and calm, and the content you communicate is to the point yet thorough. I am a beginner and I love learning from you as you seem knowledgeable and professional! 😊 You clearly take your art and your customers seriously, so I am considering buying the seascape print from your site.

Interesting about the pastel dust. I've been using pan pastels and bought pastel pencils also. I loved them but feel it's not something I want to do anymore due to the dust and my asthma. I'm concerned about the pigment dust. I decided to get back to watercolour and started sketching with fountain pens. I follow you on Instagram so seeing this video was fun to see how you have everything set up so nicely.

Very nice!!!! I love the cleat wall. I have seen other artists use it in their studios but never knew what it was called. I am hoping to convert a part of my basement into a studio and would LOVE to have this. But I do have a question: Is there a way to hang a stretched canvas on it? Maybe an attachment that would allow it to hang on one of the cleats and be stable? Your studio is beautiful. So is your artwork.

Shaymus - I have huge studio envy! Brilliant video - well planned, researched and executed. I want to put all the suggestions into practice myself now. Great ideas. I love a studio tour and this is the best one I've ever seen.
Here's the "but". Someone else has also mentioned this and it was a big red flag. I was IT Health & Safety trainer for staff using computers and sitting at their desks. All the set up you have created is second to none. The one, outstanding danger is your use of the armrest on your chair.
You might not suffer much pain at the moment, but that's because you are young and fit. I am against resting any part of the arm, wrist rests are a no-no and resting your elbow is just putting off the worst. The active arm should always be free from the shoulder to the fingers. There are many tendons in the hand, wrist and arm - they need complete freedom of movement. I would say that a Mahl stick is a good tool. I have a lot of experience - probably more than 8 years - and research shows that once you have wrist or elbow pain, it is too late to cure.
Please think about it and I hope this has also helped your lovely followers. I mean only the best.

Hi Shaymus, I have just completed the 2nd year of a fine art painting degree., and I can tell you that traditional portrait /figurative and realistic art is still not appreciated as much as abstract/modern art. I was using pastels for portraits in the 70’s (Yes, I’m soon to be 70, and an extra mature student! 😁). I love your work and hope to pick up from where I left off with your expert guidance.. Your room is so organised but this is something I doubt that I could achieve as I’m your typical messy artist! You deserve any success, well done!
