Small Towns Have a Problem

I started choosing DG in rural areas because it is much less likely to have to answer for being a guy with long hair or have to hear the bigoted comments about me or anyone who isn’t one of them.

My small towns have 2 dollar generals... maybe 1 mile away from each other... MAYBE. We have an overpriced company store, and 2 dollar generals to get most things from. We have no choice, unless we want to travel.

Grew up in a small town, moved to a city for 10 years, then moved back to a small town. I can see most of you have no idea what you're talking about. Just regurgitating the same bs you read on social media.

I live in a relatively rural "small town" in the south. There are literally 3 dollar generals within walking distance from me, and about 5 fast food restaurants. But the closest grocery store is about a 20-30 min drive depending on traffic. It's on the other side of a highway too, so trying to walk or bike there is extremely dangerous. Eat healthy and affordably. Try THAT in a small town.

Thankfully on the west coast small towns with family owned businesses are still a thing.
Most small towns out here in washington are able to fight the large names out.
Closest thing is the local food bank having a contract with the Costco down river.

Here in the South, the small towns are often some of the more destitute and violent. Unemployment leads people to substance abuse, substances lead to crime. It's a really vicious cycle and it's largely not the fault of the people who live there. My great gandfather lived in small town Tennessee as a union machinist at a factory that built air conditioners and refrigerators. He was able to support a family of 6 on one income and retired with a healthy pension. That left and the only choice for the next generation was to leave or scrape by on low wages in poor conditions. Now they just get gouged on off brand processed food from the Dollar General. Way she goes man. My dad and grandfather made it to to the city and that offered us more opportunity. My cousins were less fortunate than I and a lot of them wound up lost and left behind.

These types of stores like DG, Family Dollar, etc...all operate with the same predatory business model. On the surface, the prices seem low, and things seem like a deal. However, manufacturers in the past few years have begun working with DG for exclusive packaging, making items with lower counts per package. Take soap, for example. Usually, walmart with have 6 packs or 12 packs. As an example, say the 6 pack costs $5. DG will release the same name brand product in a 4 pack...and they will sell it for $3.99. On the surface, it's the same product for cheaper, and a less savvy person will grab it...however, the actual per item cost is now higher!! Add this up over a whole cart of groceries over several months, and this "cheap" alternative is actually now much more expensive.

I wished, somebody would make parody country music, where they call out all the problems of US small towns, like job loss, the young and smart people leaving, opiod addiction, intolerance etc.

I grew up in a small town in Montana, and what I learned is these “try that in a small town” guys are just scared little bullies, or meth dealers, and all of them act tough in groups, but 1v1, they don’t even show up.
So friendly advice, if you get in a fight in a small town, watch out for their friends, and cowboy boots hurt to get kicked by, but they have no real traction. 😘👍

The system in itself is what makes such exploitation possible. Outsourcing the infrastructure that was established in the 1940s(WW2) is an obvious shot to the foot. None of this can possibly change without complete reform of the Capitalist infrastructure. The last few figures in this country who propose true reform that would require an "upheaval" tend to wind up assassinated. Then nobody cares when there's no closure. I live in a small town of less than 2000 residents next to the Savannah River Site, as we call it locally but also known as the Savannah River Plant, it made tritium during the cold war for thermonukes. It is a strange little town with a high death rate. Lots of addiction, mental health issues.

After I got my first paycheck and realized it was for $100 and I would never be getting more hours I realized it was never going to work so I couldn't buy the car that I was wanting to get

I grew up in a town with less than 5,000 people and I can assure you that if you leave your car unlocked you will have all of your shit stolen. If you leave your house unlocked you will have all of your shit stolen. If you hang out at the local park long enough you will be offered Meth or Heroin or whatever other drugs the local Mayor's kids might be peddling that day. Small towns can be quite the toxic shit hole. At least the one I grew up in is.

The most annoying thing I hear is when these rubes and bumpkins tell foreigners, "don't go to New York or LA, those places ain't the real America!" Well, going off of their diverse demographics, yes, as a matter of fact, NY and LA are better representatives of the cultural diversity of the US than whatever Podunk, one-horse town the KKK still holds meetings in. People say that in big cities, nobody helps their neighbors and everyone treats each other like shit. That myth was dispelled on 9/11 when those "mean", "aggressive" and "insensitive" New Yorkers banded together as a community and donated blood, helped grieving families, searched for missing loved ones, opened their homes to those in need, helping one another etc. Meanwhile, in small town, USA the Sikh at the local 7-Eleven was being assaulted by good ol' boys for his turban.

In my experience: small towns are full of super judgmental people with small minds.

Based on my experiences and gaining insight for both, I think small towns and big cities are pretty shitty and the reason is, more importantly, workplaces, in other words, headquarter/food chain making a random decision to put a bunch of retail/restaurants in small towns as to where there's no support and people not getting along. As for my small town, luckily there's a mutual vibe, but as for workplaces it's bad and the faults winds down to the people in the big city and the people within the county as a a whole in a small town. Overall, a big shitty city has to come to a small town and pretty much see what been missed out on and the other way around for small town pple. Lastly but another overall fault in previous generations is coming up with the idea of a small town and even a big city and I blame the population of people

Let's face it, everyone has a Wal-Mart somewhere close by with a dozen national restaurants.We all have Amazon for the same everything else that everyone else has.

Listening to country music to get an idea of small town cultures is like listening to people actually from small towns talk about living in NYC.
That said, "small town values" as described in right wing politics does not exist. It's just people in a town. Some are friendly, some have "FJB Edition" and Dixie flags on their trucks.

I learned to write graffiti and sell drugs really well in a small town. I actually had an edge over other writers and drug dealers when I moved back to my city. You get really good at those things when you live in a small police state run by reactionary Christians. If you can sell drugs in a small town where cops have nothing to do and will call in the DEA, and investigate potheads selling weed selling drugs is easy in a big city. If you can sneak around a small town writing graffiti when nothing but cops are riding around after 2 A.M and there are zero pedestrians, you can write graffiti in a big city.

I grew up in central Texas. Sandwich between several small towns. With several larger cities within 60 miles.
Most people out here don’t talk to each other. A police officer I became friends with moved into my area for family reasons is desperate to leave. Mostly because nobody will talk to him (other than church) because he’s an outsider. I grew up out here and I’m treated like I’m invisible most of the time. People look at you like you’re crazy if you try to talk to people. Most people only interact with their family, church friends or coworkers they might like. The women are NOT loyal. The women are extremely picky. The friendly women I might are outsiders.
My best friend I have who stepped up to help me through some tough situations is from… California.
The funniest thing is some people moved out here from out of state says my area is the nicest people they ever met.
