Robert Johnson lived under a system of violent racism, forced labor, extreme poverty, and constant fear.During this particular era, the "Devil" in blues music was rarely just a religious figure. Instead, the Devil was a metaphor for the inescapable, crushing weight of systemic oppression, white supremacy, and the harshness of daily life in the Mississippi Delta. Walking side-by-side with the Devil meant living a life where danger and trouble followed you every single day.The song also reflects the psychological toll of that environment, showing a man deeply conflicted by his own destructive impulsesThe opening lines, "Early this morning, when you knocked upon my door... And I said, hello Satan, I believe it's time to go," show a man who feels his damnation is inevitable. He accepts his dark fate because his earthly reality is already a living hell.
