For me, the real test would be to put in a motorcycle, in New England and see if it lasts more than 3 or 4 years.

That is a completely baseless claim that has no merrit: "eventually sodium ion batteries will be better". Reason: Sodium Ion batteries have been worked on for the last 8 years, they get announced ready for mainstream during the whole time and never were, now that they are ready, it turns out that there really aren't that many upsides to this battery chemistry, the drawbacks are massive and so numerous that many have given up on the tech that was hyped so much falsely.

Main issue I feel is that a 12v car sodium battery should not have a BMS only a cell balancer. Lead acid hasn't had any BMS ever and works fine sodium is safer and overcharging will damage the cell but It won't go up in flames like a regular lithium ion would. I put a cheap 12v sodium from china in my bolt ev and it's been fine no issues

Regarding sodium ion tech. Another YouTube channel that mostly focuses on power stations did a review of the new Bluetti sodium ion power station/battery. Using a, let's call it a long distance hole-punching device, he put multiple holes in the unit to test it's resilience and chemistry stability. It tolerated the first few hits but after a few holes it started smoking then entered a rather dramatic chemical cascade resulting in fireworks-like flames and shooting/exploding parts. I'm no battery chemistry expert, but it certainly didn't look like Na-ion was any more stable than Li-ion. In that regard, I'd probably rather stick with LiFePO4 chemistry if I were looking for a replacement battery for automobiles, considering motor vehicle collision potential. Definitely interesting.

I have never had a lead acid battery last less than 5 years in a car. Normal is 8. The batteries in my truck last for about 10. I do use solar maintainers. I live in northern BC.

Smell like fake reviews as too technical. How can you charge these? Can they be a direct straight swap for AGMs in a house battery scenario? E.g a boat. Been waiting for lipoh prides to come down again but NA is safer and should be easier

OK, right off I see the problem here. The issue on construction is they are using a Lithium BMS for the Sodium-Ion battery, which doesn't have the faults and natural balance charging issues of LI cells. I would be very tempted to remove everything down to the 3V cells and start over with new nickel bus bars and TIG weld them on as well as main terminal connector wires silver solder them on instead of lead type low temp solder joints.
I've studied this new SI technology some and was shocked to see the BMS in this battery. I think the basic battery pack as a properly welded for high drain and high heat use could prove to charge exactly like a lead-acid battery, which the alternator regulator is naturally made to operate and do its own circuit balancing.
In LI batteries the chemical stack in the cells are finicky, fragile and underwhelming when it comes to real raw performance with a limited high voltage and a limited low draw limit, which is also part of the MBS job to not allow the LI cells to draw too low to prevent damaging them. Sodium Ion batteries shouldn't have that much of a different characteristic to tank batch charging we have always known in lead acid batteries. I don't see this causing thermal damage or thermal runaway to catastrophic failure like the lithium cells.

A battery with a BMS will be incompatible with most regulators intended for lead-acid batteries. A lead-acid battery will provide a load even when fully charged, boiling lightly. A BMS will just disconnect the battery when charged, leaving no load for the regulator.

This is not the battery of the future, itβs not for cars or portable devices, itβs going to be used for stationary devices, providing battery power to homes. These batteries have nearly the same price, with by far less performance and much more weight to them. Itβs the comparison of going from Lithium back to NiCad batteries or Lead Acid batteries. Itβs a backwards step.

@oldguysandtrucksI have a lead acid installed in 2017 battery still in my car. Most of mine last over 5 yrs because I maintain them. Always check out electrolyte level and make sure to y ok ur terminal connects and gr or unds are good.
@secretninjawarriorIf the charging voltage was stuck at 14v, it is possible that the lower voltage on the alternator was due to the battery pulling amps from the alternator, causing voltage to drop due to load. 14 volts is still charging for a lead acid battery, so it would still charge. ..
The sodium battery has a charge controller, that will be set up to charge the battery at any voltage provided by the alternator.
Sodium Ion battery don't have the thermal runaway problem that lithium battery have but they still burn. Other that that, Sodium ion batteries are not that great.
@tachyon5321If you leave the lights on and the battery gets low. I wonder if the battery will accept so much of a charge that it will burn the alternator or the charging wires up?

@danross4309To measure the voltage the leads are connected across the battery as seen, but there are two ways to measure the current, by placing the meter leads in series which is usually OK up about ten amps, but if you are going the start and charge the vehicle then you would have to use the clamp part of the meter, the reason he is seeing zero amps is because he took the clamp off the battery cables. @thegodhoward8037You got fooled by a smart computer that is designed to turn off the alternator. Iβve given intervals to save gas! This has happened to me too. As you drive down the road with a normal battery, CF the battery voltage doesnβt vary some. This is the computer trying to get better mileage by decreasing the alternator load And letting the battery where out a little faster! I last all this function in a 2012 Nissan the computer started acting up. I had to eliminate the computer from the charging circuit and lose my 1 mile per gallon. Big loss right? So now my battery lasts longerand I lose 1 mile per gallon if that much.
@texbuxton6305The biggest benefit of Sodium Ion batteries is supposed to be cost. So paying more to be an early adopter makes no sense. Also while CATL has very promising Naxtra cells entering production, that isn't what you have here. I wouldn't go near some kind of 3rd tier Sodium Ion even if decently priced.
Wake me when there is a real CATL Naxtra based Starter battery for an affordable price.
Sodium is probably better than lead acid but not as good is lithium
@AshGreen359Batteries donβt get worn out in cars faster because of more electronics in modern cars. The battery is basically a buffer or capacitor if your alternator is working correctly. The problem with them lasting less time is partly from being cycled so much without being driven long enough to fully charge. These short trips are what not only ruins your battery but your entire engine.

@enigmaak8049The voltage regulator only charges the level of battery needs to be charged then tapers off. Perhaps your new battery had a full charge?
@WRATHUSASodium batteries, quality ones, will do 10k+ cycles. They are less susceptible to temperature. Their prices are plummeting rapidly. They can be shipped with zero charge in them. They offer more amps in the cold. They will only improve. As far as the voltage thing goes, you can by a cheap voltage booster to resolve the issue of your charging system not providing enough for the battery. This is already a common problem with AGM batteries with weak alternators.
@williameldridge9382Most car batteries are 12 volt not 14 and alternator usually charges at 13.8 volts.
@nickreyes4570New cars have auto start/stop and it puts a serious toll on the starter and battery. Have you tested this scenario?

I just replaced my battery the other day for the second time since owning my vehicle so I am interested in alternatives to agm batteries as they seem to barely last 3 years for me. The NAPA legend that I just replaced was at 37 months when it let go which was very close to what the factory ac delco did. Unfortunately this battery doesn't seem to be a viable solution.

These things seem to have specs & limitations similar to supercapacitors . . .
PROS: lightweight, fast charging, able to deliver LOTS of juice in a hurry, lots of charge cycles, and very efficient. Sounds awesome at first glance, right ?
CONS: The deal breaker is that their total power storage capacity is total f&&&ing GARBAGE . . . if I read things correctly. Take your pick of amp-hours (Ah) or watt-hours (Wh), because both suck ... advertisers prefer Wh simply because it sounds bigger among squishy-brained consumers who struggle with basic arithmetic.
I have 40Ah LiFeYpo4 as starting battery in my Civic for over 12 years and it is still good. Less voltage drop when starting (visible on dash not dimming as much). Not balanced though, one day I might open it to see if the cells are out of balance...
@jointerczI want to see some of the other properties. Like, what happens if there is a dead short? How dangerous are the contents if this leaks? Are there any disposal/recycling issues? How stable is the output voltage vs temperature? etc.
