As for the interrupting, cultures exist along a continuum that goes from “highly respectful” (think, Japan, for example) and “highly participative”. The Latin cultures tend to be closer to the “highly participative” end. 😂😂

There’s just a lotta ignorance in the US about the difference between Spain and Mexico. I had an American tell me that Spaniards were “people of color”. She was shocked to learn they are pretty much Caucasian just like the rest of us of European descent.

3:10 "invaded and colonized" another one expanding the leyenda negra, they weren't colonies, they were viceroyalties. They weren't created to extract all possible outcome and kill all local population as the British did, they were another part of Spain. With the same laws and benefits, universities and Healthcare peninsular Spain had.

I were born in England and i never grew up with any negative connetations to Spaniards or any Mediterraneans apart from racism i got for having olive skin , full lips , big hair , short height and maltese surname. I find its usually russians and english people who are put in a dark light on tv as they are usually cast as the villains the most. Very true the western work environment is toxic, most especially the anerican work environment. We would all do a lot better taking after the Mediterraneans because at the end of the day were not machines we are human beings with lives , emotions , families and different strengths and neurological abilities. We are not machines we should not be working excessively and harshly to the point of burn out and a break down of our personal relationships etc that isnt right. Its not "lazy" to have boundaries and know your worth

When we went to Spain twice in 2019 overall we really had a great experience with Spaniards. I am ethnically Sephardic Spanish since my familia came from Spain . There was only one man who was not as nice to me as he could have been. He was a taxi driver I was speaking Spanish to . When he dropped us off he told me in a rude way that I spoke Spanish very slowly. Well yes, I do because that is how my gente speak here in the USA. DUH .

Well, Spaniards don’t like prejudices about their self, it is comprensibile. Less comprensibile is they
often spreads prejudices and offenses to others when discussing: always exalting their country for everything in a way often so exaggerating to seems broke in the head. Not so kindly they usually blame and despise others. The fact they are quite loud and direct while speaking it is an excuse for deny their lack of manners and respect.

Hi, thank you for the video. I'm Spanish living in the UK for almost 10 years now. There is good for in the UK for sure, but it can also be expensive. The problem here from my perspective and experience is the amount of fast food, sweets and processed foods the majority of people consume on a regular basis and this is reflected in supermarkets (lunch meal deals, already made, etc.)I don't know if in the past, people used to cook from scratch a lot more, I imagine so. I know that sadly this is also changing in Spain but I belive we still cook from scratch most of our meals.

Interesting points. I arrived in Bilbao and spent a week in San Sebastian with a couple friends. Finally reached Barcelona, after hitting Pamplona and Zaragoza. American Culture shock is real. and yes literally everyone stares. yeah, I know we probably look like tourists, especially being from Montana Lol but we are trying to be as inconspicuous as possible. Americans are incredibly polite on the sidewalks at home but we've noticed a huge difference here. Everyone just kind of does their own thing or walk side by side 2x2 or with 4 people and not care about moving aside for anyone. Not even slightly, even if we start veering towards one side to make clear a path single file to the point of having to go in to the street because no one moves!! I've had to move out of the way for people charging towards me who were hellbent on not moving a single inch. People coming out of shops literally walking right in front of us (almost into us) its crazy. Or literally stopping dead in the middle of a busy sidewalk. I'm walking in zigzags down a sidewalk like a weirdo to avoid hitting people. NY or LA are probably different but most other place in the US have sidewalk courtesy.

I enjoyed this video and how you explained how perceptions differ from one culture to another. Basically, when one visits —emphasis on “visits” — another country, one must not expect things or people to conform with your expectations. You are a “guest” and therefore must accept the conditions as they are. Thank you for your well-presented videos.

There is a very subtle teaching of the slightly evil Spanish in the USA. Probably going back to the Catholic Spain and protestant USA. Also an interesting mix or admiration for a certain demographic in Spain who fought against Franco. Probably because of Ernest Hemingway's works. Love your videos and love Spain can't wait to get back to Valencia!

Spain is always a lot of fun, however, the psychology of the people is rugged (áspera) to the point that they could seem to be rough , but in reality they are very warm . I do have profound reservations about Catalonians, but I believe it's based on their sense of identity, they wan to be more relevant than they really are..... the rest of Spain is pure joy !

Hi. Actually, in Norway, we use, directly translated, "pulling a Spanish one". It means, taking a short cut, our doing something that is slightly illegal, or just frowned upon.. We don't se spanish people as bad, just as someone who, might, especially in traffic, have a slight disregard for the rules... Like, when it comes to "parking". Just stopping at the curb, or blocking the road, turn on the emergency lights, because you will "be right back"...

What this video demonstrates is that stereotypes are always nonsense. I´ve lived in Spain almost five years and I love it, especially the many ways it deviates from the norms I was used to in my dismal country of origin.

I keep hearing both of you use the word "ciao", when saying bye in a number of your videos. Is this something that is regional? Or is this something that is accepted nationally in Spain? We are planning a trip for November and brushing up on our Spanish. This is the first time I am hearing this.

In Spanish we have a saying "hacerse el sueco" (pretend to be Swedish) to imply that someone may pretend to not know what is going on even although s/he fully understands the situation but prefers not to let on that all is clear.

I am Portuguese and Spanish, born and raised in the USA. I visited Tenerife and southern Spain for the first time in 2019. I didn't feel like the locals, but towards the end of the 18th day, I felt like I can live there. I need to practice my Spanish but I can get with my present skills. There's still room for improvement.

@Emy53

Oh geez, really...Mexico and Spain are totally different cultures. Even Puerto Rico is very different than the Spaniards in Spain. My ancestors originated in Spains peninsula, Canary Islands and Portugal. Some of my family that live in Puerto Rico identify themselves as Canarios or Islanos. Others (younger generation) say they are Puerto Ricans.

Negative stereotypes I've heard: they don't know how to patiently wait in line, they smoke too much, they talk politics too much, they don't hustle when they work, they are a bit smug, and smack their women around sometimes. Though, of course, every country and every people have negative stereotypes. And I'm sure they are all far from the truth.

Couple questions.

1.) I'm in the U.S. and currently there's a lot of discussion about race and our country's history, I'm thinking specifically regarding slavery and the terrible treatment of indigenous peoples. Lately it's been an all consuming topic where I live. Do people in Spain talk about the history of their country and treatment of indigenous people in North and South America? Just curious.

2.) If I moved to Spain what should I talk about to not come off as "INTENSE". What do Spaniards talk about?

In Sanlúcar de Barrameda en Jerez de la Frontera they speak with a lisp. This is the way that Canadians and Americans and the rest of the world for that matter perceive it.
