๐ฉ According to legend, a single Viking warrior held the narrow bridge against the English for a time. He killed about 40 English warriors before he was killed. In the fierce fighting that followed, both Harald Hardrada and Tostig were killed, along with most of the Viking host. Harald's death in battle is considered to have marked the end of the Viking Age in Europe. The English had experienced a swift and decisive victory at Stamford Bridge, but just three days later news reached King Harold that William of Normandy was commencing his invasion to take the throne.

For your information Viking age carried on until at least the 13th century on the west coast of Scotland. Itโs a misconception it ended with the battle of Hastings.

@FreeTheGamer1Someone commented on saying almost most wouldnt have yet swords. This is likely both truth and false. Swords would have been forged for the elite jarls but most would have been scavaged and stolen during plunder and even passed down. Extra plunder was also kept by many jarls of stolen weapons so yeah expensive but many were just taken for them during pillage and plunder.

@Kenjidickerson2425The British do not stipulate when Viking age begun and ended. In reality it began way earlier with the Scandinavian Vendel age. We have to question the British narrative and take control of our (the Scandinavian) own history.

Theyโd have more appropriately โgrasped their spears and axes.โ Mainly axes. Remember at their core, Vikings were farmers and explorers. The majority of their weapons doubled as tools when at home, ie their axes and seaxs(commonly confused with short swords).

@TheWizardDenIt always amuses me that historians claim the Viking age apparently began in England, and ended in England, without mentioning that this is just the English narrative. The Viking Age began before Lindisfarne, and persisted after Stamford Bridge.

@nickharmer3049Only in my opinion of course, but The Battle that ended Anglo Saxon/Old English rule and probably the most History changing battle ever fought on British soil , was the battle of Fulford, on September 20th, which forced Godwinson to leave his position on the South coast to return North. The two battles outside York ending in victory at Stamford Bridge massively depleted his forces numbers and their stamina, helping to quickly reverse his fortunes which led to defeat at Hastings and the consequences of Williams murderous reign really did change the face of England. Indeed many of today's Aristocracy can still trace their heritage back to the Invasion of 1066.
