Tennis For Dummies- The Rules

Video Overview & Insights

If you've ever watched a tennis game with a non-aficionado, you know that you'll most likely spend the next hours unsuccessfully explaining the rules of this fantastic sport instead of watching the match. And even then, this person might give up halfway through to go jump out the window.

Stop the music, please.

— @isfuglensunivers844

All of this because of a guy named Walter Copton Wingfield .

This video is a more or less accurate version of what led to tennis being so full of weird rules. Show it to someone who doesn't understand tennis rules. Not sure it'll improve anything but there's a funny moment towards the end so maybe (s)h'ell laugh.

Tennis is a hard Sports, but not the hardest by far!

— @BestDokusoftheWorld

Thank you to @ServedPodcast for providing sarcastic content. And this legendary ace at 3'30.

Truth is I had way more material from @thetennispodcast bv but it's so golden I save it for later.

This is my first video that I watched today. You’ve made a fan 🎉

— @goldensoulholistics

Depiction of Walter Clopton and his crew is purely fictional. Walt if somehow you're watching this from heaven, first of all wtf and second, thanks for everything. Tie breaks rule.

Music

The rules are crazy. But they do do one thing for sure: produce some crazy drama and as a tennis spectator I love that

— @mg59-00

Ben Goldstein- Can't lose it all

Dimitrix- I've been thinkin

This video reminds me of one of those SNL’s Nate Bargatze George Washington dream skits.

Young Rich Pixies- Hidden Cam

Everyone thinks that their own favourite sport is the hardest one on earth

The 2-point separation is necessary. Otherwise the first to serve will always win a break-less set.

if you learnt to always get a let you would never lose. youd never win either but maybe eventually your opponent would just leave

@vincenzofranchelli2201

tennis literally has one of the easiest rules in sports lol. the ball is either in or its out. ur opponent fails to get the ball on your side, you win.

Almost every sport that has a server has that 2 point ahead rule because it would be unfair without. In tennis the server has a slight advantage over the breaker so if he would be the first to serve in a set or a tiebreak he would have an advantage to win since he had more serves if he only needs one point more. Your critics only make sense for the deuce in a game of a set were the server doesnt alternate.

I don't understand your bit about the Ace being complicated. Why? This is how it goes is badminton, volleyball and many other similar sports. You make one mistake, the opponent gets the point. No matter how long the rally was.

@PetrolSniffingDoofus

Tennis is not that complicated, you should dive into the intricacies of snooker rules if you want a real challenge.

Excellent sense of humor!

For those who got here trying to actually understand: no one really knows why all these weird exceptions are in place, as Tennis is pretty ancient.

The 15-30-40 shenanigans is believed to be an abbreviation that stuck on, as french players would say "quarante" instead of "quarante-cinq".

Deuce comes from "à deux" or "by two", as it means both players can win the game by scoring two more points.

The two-point difference is required to avoid giving the victory to a player due to chance, i.e. ball hitting the net and falling inside the adversary's court.

The serve let is meant to ensure a "clean" start of a point. However, it is only a let if the ball hits the net and falls inside the adversary's court. Otherwise, it's a service fault.

The tiebreak was introduced in like the 1970s, but also it made tennis matches shorter because before, sets could go on indefinitely
