Thai Gold Explained: Why It's Unique & What Buyers Should Know

Video Overview & Insights

In this interview, Thomas Pryor — a 14-year veteran of Thailand's gold industry — explains his journey serving in the US military, to teaching, and building a gold business in Thailand.

Can you imagine the global mafia it takes to keep gold the same price everywhere. Who controls that? How is that possible?

— @TimeWarp26

He shares what makes Thai gold unique, how the export business works, what buyers need to know before purchasing gold in Thailand, and how the market has changed during the recent gold boom.

Perhaps I've missed it in your program but Thai gold in the way of purchasing ingots or coins is only 96.5 percent pure where European and North American and the rest of the world's gold is 99.99%. I suppose that when one is investing in jewelry that does not really matter. But they need to be aware of that discrepancy.

SUPPORT 💵

There are dozens of stories of Thai girls asking for gold which she will sell the moment you are leaving the country. And of course the obvious robbery when your gold chain disappeared when you are going out and enjoy the nightlife.

Recommendations ✅

Fascinating! It will be interesting to find out if it is mostly gold chains etc that are sold in Thailand or if they have much in the way of gold and silver coinage too. It would also be interesting to know how much the Thai gold whether 965 or 24k varies from spot?

Watched all of your video, good job explaining in your "almost Canadian border accent !!! Haha. I'm from Halifax, retired here 10 yrs - don't own any gold but I'm pretty damned sure it beats the GD banks for gains.
Didn't hear you talk about gold bars like at Aurora, etc.
1 or 2 baht size, I'm not a jewelry guy at 64, never was.
More infor on this form of gold please.😊

Moving or Visiting Thailand: Book a Consultation 📅

I'm a young gold stacker; being in EU, I buy the gold 20 francs; it's true, it's more for storing value rather than investment, but that being said: if I LIVED in Thailand, I would buy gold bahts (unfortunately they don't have gold coins, not popular/liquid ones at least), because you want liquidity, something as quickly recognizable as possible, something that has no premium (like jewelry does); If you want gold jewelry because you like jewelry, then buying it in Thailand is a cheaper option; but if you are a tourist there and you want to store value with gold, don't buy jewelry in Thailand, buy the most liquid gold that you can find back in your country (EU/UK? sovereigns or 20 francs; USA? ask Yankee Stacking!).

You didn't get into buying bars instead of jewelry When you sell your necklace, .you will get less than bars. One of the reason Thai's love gold is to show off.

Recent Scientific Breakthroughs: Researchers at facilities like CERN have successfully turned lead into gold. By smashing lead ions together, powerful electromagnetic fields strip protons from the nuclei, producing microscopic amounts of gold. Startups like Marathon Fusion have also researched creating gold using fusion reactors. As of now, man made gold is expensive to manufacturer. But then again man-made diamonds once were expensive to manufacture too. Furthermore Space mining, the Harvesting Asteroids, and future finds of large deposits of gold found here on Earth will definitely affect the value of gold. Investing in Gold isn't necessarily a sure return when considering these factors. Small investment in gold, with the bulk of your investment in stocks and bonds is the wise choice for any investor.

Thank you so much for this video. I have been in jewelry stores in Thailand but never bought anything because I was a little intimidated. I didn't know if I could trust the stores in China Town or at the Malls and of course I am just buying like a piece or two. It's just for me 😊 Next time I will feel more comfortable about it. Thanks so much!

I prefer bullion and selling in Singapore. I've been married to my Thai wife for nearly 29 years and have spent a lot of time in Thailand and he's pretty much right about the gold. We have some pieces and bought a fair about over time but it is a form of bullion for Thailand and considered money.

Gold is actually more volatile than the global stock market

1980–1985 -65% (from around $850 to below $300 per ounce)

1974–1976 it dropped -47%

2011–2015 it dropped -45% (from around $1,920 to about $1,050 per ounce)

2020–2022. Around -20%

When you sell gold in Thailand, why do the merchants always look for the price you purchased the piece for? They often look for a purchase receipt or through their own records if purchased at the same store.

It is great to see Tom on Cal's channel, I subscribe to both channels. I had a chance to meet Tom several months ago in Bangkok & do some business with him. Anyone from the US that can't make it to Thailand to buy Thai gold, I would definitely consider buying investment gold through Tom's company. He has a great reputation, which is very important in his industry, and he offers unique pieces that are difficult to obtain in Thailand.

My top 3 trades: I sold 8 oz of .9999 bullion during covid for $1,600 each to fund a vacation. I sold 20 bitcoin for $120 in May 2013, and liquidated 120k from a 401(k) in 2000 to pay off my credit cards. Don't ask me for financial advice.
