Thai Retirement Visas vs Marriage Visas?
Video Overview & Insights

My Thai wife and I have been married and living in the UK for nearly 20 years, so the marriage visa looks like the one I will go for. We're both in our mid-sixties and want to go as soon as possible. I would say that we have as strong a marriage as anyone could have, so we shouldn't hopefully have any problems convincing the Thai authorities that it's not some kind of sham marriage.

Some years when I was still officially married to my first wife, we went along to Maptaphut Immigration to enquire about the possibility of getting a Marriage Visa, the Immigration Officer advised us to apply for the Retirement Visa as it was less hassle!

With all of the nonsense in banks, I'm looking seriously about going back to the marriage visa to reduce my exposure to Thai banking.
The Thai banks treat us all like criminals no matter how long we have been banking with them.
I wish the US embassy would certify US social security benefit letters demonstrating exceeding the $65k monthly threshold.I don't care for laying out 12 months of bank statements to meet the criteria, and would like to free up my $400k in "dead" money in my Thai bank. Combined with the current green card freeze for my wife, the embassy (State Dept) is becoming less and less helpful.
@rifitzDon't know if this is accurate or not, but I think that a marriage visa/extension, due to its enabling of getting a work permit, also provides a path to getting permanent residency, whereas a retirement visa/extension does not. Would be nice to get a knowledgeable clarification on this.
@ruagodmy immigration office(r) told me straight out to apply for the retirement visa although legally married to a Thai (earlier in about April this year)😮
@SteveOdy555Thai Immigration are definitely placing more scrutiny on Marriage Visas, and I support them. My own country could learn from them.
@mikeyboy3054What if your wife supports you ..
@toptennews4737You left out just how annoying having a marriage visa is. It’s not just all the paperwork, it’s immigration coming to the house and making sure your neighbor is home to be your witness. Then when everything was finished in Nonthaburi they send it to Bangkok for approval. For me the last time I did that was 39 days.
After that I decided to go the retirement visa route. Then I discovered the LTR P visa and now life is good.
I'll drop by for some pancakes in September 😋
@ForeverTributesNLGreat info Ben! It was nice meeting you at Pancake Palace and crossing paths on the street nearby… I’m back in the United States in Arizona for now and hope to return soon possibly by New Years Eve.
@thetotaltravelerStill a few years out from applying for most likely a marriage Visa, need to figure out the rules if I want to continue my current job here at home except remote from Thailand.
@spda242I'm not sure if the whole of thai immigration are aware that the UK state pension is paid every 4 weeks not monthly, hence 13 payments per year not 12.
@keithstokes358If your wife decides that she no longer wants you and wants a divorce, then there goes your visa, and you can kiss goodbye to Thailand.
I've been told by an immigration officer that you have 7 days to leave once the divorce is finalized. I i have no idea if it's true or not.
