The Adorkable Misogyny of The Big Bang Theory

Video Overview & Insights

Watch part 2 here:

Howard stares at girls while engaged yet his wife goes to see male strippers later in the show

But we only view the man’s behaviour as wrong and only have critique of that, show is often sexist in the other direction throughout

Either have it both ways or no ways

The show constantly degrades them as the main humour of the show often the female characters mocking them and showing their disdain for their lack of masculinity. Show has both misogyny and misandry

Also it’s a show for laughs not political commentary try a show that’s based around political commentary

Never watched BBT but it sounds like grown-up iCarly, mean-spirited humor and misplaced laugh tracks and all.

Should be easy enough for any guy to imagine how uncomfortable it'd be to run away with a towel around his waste as a group of weirdos drive RVs with cameras after him to look at his crotch. And then the scene is played for laughs.

The Big Bang Theory provides a perfect lens through which to deconstruct a popular media trope I like to call the Adorkable Misogynist. Adorkable Misogynists are male characters whose geeky version of masculinity is framed as comically pathetic yet still endearing. Their status as nerdy “nice guys” then lets them off the hook for a wide range of creepy, entitled, and sexist behaviors.

Thank you for this <3

This is the 1st of two video essays about gender on The Big Bang Theory. Next month I'll focus on how the show relentlessly mocks its four male leads for not acting like “real men," and in so doing reinforces a whole bunch of regressive ideas about masculinity.

• Yes, The Big Bang Theory was the most watched scripted TV show in 2016 according to Nielsen: http://www.nielsen.com/us/en/insights/news/2016/tops-of-2016-tv.html

Then there's Amy - the trope of the unattractive woman who has a s*x drive, which is prevented as the most hilarious thing. Are people ready to look at that bigotry? Or is it all, "Haw haw haw, she's UGGGGLLLLLYYY she deserves it." That harms ALL women, cis, trans, queer or straight.

CREDITS

Great video! This reminds me of the number of times guys have recommended this show to me, and 90% of the times they have turned out to be sexists.

Leonard could have been my favorite character but he enabled at the beginning and at the end of the show treats penny as a prize in front of other ppl, he's the guy who's the sweetest when he's around women but he's a misogynistic ass when he's around other men AND HOWARD IS THE WORST AND DOESN'T SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES!!!! btw penny did like Leonard since they became friends but at the end of the series they're always saying he managed to convince her and I hate that BC it makes them other characters and it poisons their relationship

But why does a show about making people laugh have to criticize bigotry? They use tactics to get away with dirty jokes but in my oppinion thats fine, bc i dont really care, maybe in hollywood od media its banned but in the real world racist jokes are still as funny as before, not everyone lives in the mainstream narrative

I certainly agree with these points on balance, though I think some of this is overplayed. Most of these clips you played cut out the parts where the sexist behaviour is called out which makes the show's portrayal of sexism worse than it really is.

@RayNewland-k6b

The show has a way to engage the audience, though. I think it is not completely bad dut rather a reflection of the current societal values. And, to be fair, they placed a huge focus on the involvement of women in science on the last season and that should also be considered.

I never watched the show, bc of Sheldon. He always seemed like a rude, misogyinistic, petty and aggressive jerk, who acted like he really hated his girlfriend. I know, based on my experience with people, that I would never tolerate a guy like that, so I got so confused when I realised people thought he was cute or something. I don't care if he seemed like he didn't understand social cues or had some kind of diagnosis. He was rude, and uncomfortable to watch for me.

i started watching tbbt after watching young sheldon and wanting to understand the source material. i am really dissapointed in the quality difference that exists within these shows.
sure, ys isn't a PERFECT show, but at the very least it has more substance to it. one thing that really irks me about this show is that the women don't really have storylines outside of their boyfriends/husbands. it's fine that they decided to make penny addicted to shoe shopping, i'm not saying it's a bad thing to make characters fit stereotypes (i mean the whole show is practically a huge stereotype), but i do have a problem with the fact that her character kind of fades away. penny is defined as being leonards partner, and it applies to the other women too. we literally never find out what penny's maiden name is, she's only known to us as penny *hofstadter*! additionally, bernie and amy are highly educated women, but it's treated more as a fun fact than a defining character trait like it is for the men. despite being main characters, they never pass the bechdel test: when they're alone, they talk about their boyfriends! the episode where the guys go to comic con (or something like that), the girls start reading comic books, showing interest in their hobbies. do their partners ever do that for them? no! it's so infuriating that such a huge sitcom fails to develop all of their characters equally. 🫩

6:37 I don't think you know what a zookeeper does, that's more along the lines of a big game hunter

After watching Kevin can f-k himself, the sitcom filter seems twice as visible see-through to me. I used to be able to reason how creepy these interactions were but now I can actually imagine how they sound without it. Really an amazing show, thanks to your suggestion I finished the two seasons in couple of days :)

@imge509

>90% of the show is about making fun of nerdy men
>Actually this show hates women

Yeah.

@cifers8928
@

Yeah, they don’t say sexism is cool but they make jokes out of it. Kind of like saying is “wrong” but still funny. Like if we all had to laugh. I’m usually someone who doesn’t want to take things too seriously but “laughiyn out of obvious sexist jokes is another thing. And while it is degrading for women, it really seems the accomplished women do nothing to say tha it is not ok

Broke up with a girl because she bought be the DVD set of the first two seasons saying this was the funniest show ever.

I hated it from the jump. Not one redeemable character on the show.

@ItsNikolai

Nope none of the guys are misogynists,that’s being hateful towards women,they don’t give any hate towards women,they just say some stuff about women that are inappropriate,that’s it.

I said to my mother that a character like Wollowitz would not be able to exist post-Me Too movement. Or, at the very least, he would be torn to shreds by the internet.

I could never understand how this show is so popular. My friend tried to grt me into it, said how fun it is, she sent me some tiktoks/shorts etc. But even if I found it funny, when I tried to watch the whole episode I just found main characters not likable at all. This video explains exactly why.

@K.Shelly
@

But you are flat wrong about one thing. The big bang theory is not homophobic in any way

@Cuteedgyemoboy-ZF9
@

The Big bang theory is my most favourite show in the whole world. it felt a thousand times better than how I met your mother (where lily and robin says they like to be groped by strangers in the subway) and friends (just because I could not relate to the characters often). but as a woman in science, being one of the toppers, I have been harassed by so called talented boys since school life, the exact same way. I found the TBBT sexism racism quite disturbing but because of the lampshading, it felt "the writers are aware". thank you for doing this and showing it for what it is. Truly thankful.

@roy_sam_lo

OMG, I got shaped and influenced by that kind of movies narrative! 😮 I hope i haven't internalized it subconsciously... I don't wanna be a creep! I don't want women to feel bad!

@john161Doe
@

the fact they make this sort of punchline out of slutshaming penny and calling her dumb in many many ways despite her being a really emotionally intelligent woman who understands social situations really well, and the fact she’s had to apologize to people making her uncomfortable (ex: howard, amy, etc..) is just a horrible thing that really makes the show horrible for me

@blueeaglegaming5114
@

Sheldon Cooper is hands down one of the most coddled and enabled characters in all of media. He’s a sexist, self centered brat who acts like a spoiled child if nobody caters to him thanks to his mother and grandmother treating him like the world revolves around him and him alone. And everyone who doesn’t baby him is a bad person in their eyes

@NeedlessExposition

Howard is one of the most punchable characters i’ve had the misfortune of setting my eyes onto 🤧
