JCS (Jim Can't Swim) - Criminal Psychology is the largest true crime channel on YouTube by a long shot. On December 4th, after a year-long absence, JCS returned...but not in the way that anyone would have expected. Their "return" marks something damning and worrying happening in an already morally ambiguous genre of content creation. Let me know your thoughts below.
0:00 Female vs. male true crime YouTube
The forehead houses the frontal lobe of the brain, and therefore people with bangs that hide the forehead feel guarded and insecure, whereas people without bangs are communicating an openness, a confidence, and in some rare cases, even a death wish.

Bodylanguage exists and they train the military. I know there are a lot of pseudoscience out there but throwing it all in the trash is incorrect too.
18:26 True crime's growing AI slop problem
25:02 How JCS alienated their audience
Dr Insanity is the worst jcs copycat thats cropped up as of late imo. Its seems to only feature the most drug-fueled, creepiest, highest shock value stories involving infanticide and similarly notorious and rare examples of violent murder. They are clearly very pro police and love to personify people as evil and psychotic despite the personifications being personal opinion and not based in any objective fact.
JCS was actually kind of cool in its hay day because he would discuss the interrogation methods that police use in the interviewing process, which i found relevant and interesting to consider while watching interrogation footage.
I will say, It's not the content creators' fault that people lap this stuff up endlessly. The fact of the matter is people love to watch this content, not despite the horrific themes that it encompasses, but because of them. And while the courts have an obligation to serve the victim's families with justice and dignity, it is a regular persons' 1st amendment right in America to discuss these things in whichever way they please. If everyone speaks about these things in the same way, in such a way that recognizes the victims' and their families suffering, that detracts from the diversity of opinions and approaches that people could have to this subject matter and im not an advocate for everyone having the same opinion. How boring is that?
There are billions of people in the world. Deindividuation is a natural phenomenon and consequence of large groups of people. If a murder occured in my small town, like the Idaho 4 murders did a few years ago, i would react alot more personally to the events than if a murder like that occured in a large city in which i was relatively automous in, or in some other city i would never visit or have any relation to. People are going to deindividualize the victims in these crime stories. Thats just psychology. Get over it.
The reason why the AI slop persists is because the double digit IQ that characterizes the population of people that actually watch it persists. The masses will listen to a story even if is entirely fabricated. They can't help that they are stupid. 😅

Girl there isn’t one video where you don’t use the term parasocial lmao
Q: Why do you pronounce "women" the same as "woman"?
A: I am South African with a particular Queen's English/south of England tinge to my accent. Please be understanding, respectful and don't send me emails or leave comments about this. Thank you :)
it's interesting that such a smart person would make videos about such superficial topics....

I SO enjoy this woman! The intelligent, insightful and perceptive critique on Internet culture is bigtime refreshing!
Still, given her wry, dry humour I'm suprised at the moral stance held in relation to JCS. Someone complained that JCS presented as 'Proud of their integrity' but I wonder where and how the viewer formed that opinion.
I think it funny that now the vids are A.I. generated and am sure they would have been enjoyed had not this truth been revealed!

I love true crime, I grew up on Investigation Discovery, as a child my Grandma & Mom would have the channel on the TV playing all day. My Mom has been falling for this AI generated true crime recently... I have to keep telling her what she's watching, but she doesn't believe me... I do enjoy Bailey Sarian. I like the way she tells the story, how she is very clear about what's an opinion vs a fact. I know not everyone finds it tasteful to watch someone do their makeup while telling a true crime story, I respect that. I think a lot of it for me is how authentic the content is, how much research went into it, the way a creator tells the story & treats it with respect. So for me, as long as the person doing their makeup, puts effort into their content, researches it thoroughly, adds links and resources and such, I'm fine with it when it's done respectfully. But this AI garbage in general has got to go! These platforms weren't made for fake content to be uploaded all day and night. It was meant to express creativity. AI can be helpful in many ways, when used properly, ethically & regulated. But to use it to form entire videos, narrate them, make the video. That's unacceptable.
@JessieRee-h8eThis video was amazing, it answered every question I had about jcs! To think I inadvertently found this while looking for more JCS videos 😂
@FinalFentanyl7YooChoob 😲
@FinalFentanyl7Linda você falando português 😊
@alicegomes16104:58 🎉a senhorita tá ficando quase fluente LOL
@AfimarrsIf anyone is interested in a true crime channel run by an actual practicing Psychologist and Neuroscientist, check out Dr. Andrew van der Vaart. You can Google him, he's still actually practicing, he's published many peer reviewed papers, and he's also a professor.
His channel is like nothing else I have ever seen. His objective is not to tell you about the crime or the case, but rather as a potential case study in a specific aspect of human psychology.
He only offers insight on cases if he feels like he has a perspective that hasn't been discussed and he never discusses the psychology or pathology of the victim, which I really like.
If you like true crime, it's definitely worth checking him out!
I hate these kinds of channels, while liking true crime. My favorite true crime channel is Crimezone, because they tell stories thoughtfully, in a mystery novel-like way, always show compassion for the victims and tell as much about them as they can, have a real face presenter who isn't trying to be attractive to anyone, and are the opposite of the kinds of channels you're speaking of, essentially, though of course there are others I like, ie Rotten Mango which has come a long way. What drives me nuts is that my partner watches exactly the kind of channels you're talking about, and their youtube algorithm is all trash, all drama/lolcow stuff, true crime channels like these, and alien nonsense. She's smart, but has little curiosity outside her comfort zone. She knows what she watches is dumb, but never cares about anything better. It's like there's an addictive element to these lowest-common-denominator channels, somehow.
@jedgrahek1426Gotta admit I've watched a lot of these channels without realizing how distasteful they are. It's one thing to get information out there and keep stories alive but it's a whole other to profit off of someone's misery while doing your makeup or baking cookies.. This video and that particular channel really turned me around on this entire genre of videos. ❤
@ladyspectre8408Bailey Sarian is great, I love her.
@jemmacash6594Almost every true crime channel on YouTube is entirely AI. It's not just one. It's the vast majority and people don't know.
Why don't you guys research stuff independently? Google is free and occasionally, accurate.
JCS is most likely owned and operated by a marketing agency.
True crime loser was a writer they credit him
@fightingfisherman9690Agreed, but what’s the difference with Netflix, Hulu, hbo and their counterparts? Is it easier to tackle individuals? Yes?
@LiquidShivazBig fan of JCS here, still you got my follow 🤨
@Staticmajor9kGlad JCS straightened out the AI nonsense. The makeup/mukbang true crime ones can get in the sea
@TomNodeHow does it feel knowing that none of you Youtubers "exposing" other channels like JCS have not even moved the needle once on his views and image in social media? You guys give off the exact same pompous and pretentious attitude as the people you're accusing of doing in this video.
@summ.3433This is my opinion but i absolutely dislike make up + true crime contents because almost everytime nobody is paying attention to the crime content and most of them are asking about the make up and complimenting the influencers. I avoid them ......also i find it disrespectful to speak such gruesome things about a real life crime while applying make up and interrupting yourself but telling your audience what product you're using sheesh.....
@ickeyVikiI love true crime but I do my best to watch channels that take it seriously and aren't offensive. Rotten Mango for instance, she does SO much research.
@Sarahk7wWatching one year on. Wondering if you made it to Brazil for our new year's this week...
@DemoGracinha-fz7igYa’ll playing Sir Simon Whistler . Genuinely empathetic host.
@riyanchii5598Thank you for posting!Fr tho link the true crimes channels referenced in the first minute; I can’t tell who they are by PFP alone????? Hello?????
I want to see the channel she prefers to be experience the difference in quality myself, obviously?????
“normal” true crime stories with a narrator is one thing but doing a mukbang while talking about horrific details on how the victims were murdered is crazy work. I always thought it was very distasteful.
@xXxsTePhIe16xXxBravo on the Portuguese. Voce vem pru Ano Novo? 🎉🎉🎉❤
@Vassilissa20201:06 😂is this true crime or true blood😂😂😂
@thesehandsartI honestly think the true crime genre is the perfect application for fully AI-generated content. At least there aren’t any really families being exploited.
@finetobeferalPlease add Kall Me Kris your good list. Kris' skill in discussing the crimes while honoring the victims is how it should be done❤
@bubbleflower1My grandma would say that true crime shows (like Snapped for example, before the internet and it was just television) reminded her of telling ghost stories around the camp fire
@NikkiDanniiThe irony of criticising creators using AI, when in the same video you're getting paid to promote an app that uses AI lol
@custardth0tI think the government are using AI against the people. How can we come together if we can't tell whether what we see online is AI or not
@CHARZZARIAYour jealousy is bigger than the pedo problem in the world. Just cause they made millions while you only make thousands LMFAO 😂😂😂😂😂😆
@Ready4RevolutionI love JCS. The idea was super original at the time, and it was so interesting to see real footage in long uncut segments of police interrogations, have the context given to you as well and additionally, some comment on the people behavior, it was both informative and entertaining. I'm quite sad that JCS turned out that way, had been hoping for a real comeback for years actually.
@FlyingHatsorry to derail, but we are still in the covid-19 pandemic. the numbers are higher now than in 2020
@bughug7342With Rottan Mango specifically I saw I didn't even sub to her for true crime. I started watching it for book and tv show stuff. Eventually the only stuff being posted is true crime.
@shortpettiteI was just recommended JCS a few days ago. I didn't check it out. I personally like Nick Crowley or Dark Asia with Megan because the narration. Especially Megan, she talks about the victims.
@arandomaroaceI think true crime can be valuable when it's either putting attention to unsolved cold cases, like detective perspective is doing for example, or cases that highlight a larger societal failure and focus cases that highlight larger failings in the system (for example stalking cases where the police did nothing until the victim was dead, child abuse cases where there were dozens and dozens of calls to CPS and nothing was done until the child died etc).
But it's a slippery slope to sensationalise the worst thing that ever happened to many families. The worst most heartbreaking thing that could ever happen. It can be really icky especially because sensationalism sells and cold cases don't.
Massive kudos to you! AND your house is so clean, despite all the dogs! I feel inspired by you but know exactly the difficulties in starting and persisting with the 'decluttering' task - an inadequate word for sorting one's hoard! I'll be following and cheering you on from over here (England). I actually feel excited for you! Lots of love xxx
@tanias6998Now, now, don't you come for Stephanie! 😁
@alystairmabloch401At the first hint of lack of respect for the victim I'm gone.Too much story telling is off putting.Pat Brown is the best for true crime analysis. She has years of experience. No faffing or trying to make somebodys misfortunate fate into a story.
