love island, a sexy summer of romance and love, is not without its problems. let's talk about everything from fast fashion to beauty standards to platforming of toxic relationships - and to the deaths of caroline flack, sophie gradon and mike thalassitis.

WHERE YOU CAN FIND ME

Small correction about disabled love islanders - there was also a contestant with ADHD. I can't remember his name but he wasn't very kind and blamed his emotionally manipulative outbursts (and ablism towards sasha!) on his ADHD, which certainly impacted aspects of my self esteem at the time as a neurodivergent viewer. I believe there was also an autistic contestant in one of the earlier seasons who spoke out later that the disability accomodations available to them were very scarce. I can't remember anything about this contestant right now though.
But the arsehole bloke with club foot was largely believed to be the first disabled contestant, further highlighting how neurodivergent and/or non visible disabilities are often discounted as disabilities.
As somebody who grew up with 'hidden disabilities' and who is now a wheelchair user, I do think we ought to have more disabled contestants whose disabilities can't be 'ignored' like Sasha. We deserve disability representation where the disabilities are a key part of who the person is. We also deserve for these contestants to be properly accomodated, included and for ablist hate speech to not be tolerated! Sasha has spoken openly about the ablist and anti deaf hate speech she was victim to in the villa.
That being said, disability often falls outside the realm of 'conventionally attractive' because being visibly disabled isn't considered 'conventionally attractive' by our biased and supremacist society (this is also why we see so few black and brown contestants).

Forgive me for being dense but do we need these shows at all? The whole make this reality show more inclusive nonsense feels like the phrase
"but women and gay people should be allowed to serve in the military too!" Yes inclusiveness is good but is it all that ethical to put the lives of these real people on blast at all? Being equally exploited is just exploitation with rainbow paint. When you go on a show like this you are essentially already a product so being treated as a commodity is going to happen no matter how inclusive it is. In addition, Crazy people bring in the views so these shows are encouraged to pick unwell people and prod them together until they make fools of themselves all for your entertainment. They are Modern freakshows at a scale so lucrative Pt Barnum is rolling in his grave. The only truly ethical reality dating show is just a well written and acted romance movie.

BUSINESS ENQUIRIES

I think Love Island is awful television, but I don't necessarily agree with the public linking their deaths solely to that - especially Caroline who enjoyed hosting and had had mental health issues and self-harmed since she was young, yet refused to get help. If they won't even listen to family/friends, then they're not going to listen to producers offering them someone to talk to or see for treatment either. You can do all the psych tests before appearing but some will still 'pass' it and appear anyway (thinking of Big Brother when Nikki Grahame didn't tell them about her eating disorder to get on). People know what they're possibly getting into with these shows at this point.

18:49 I would argue it's both. TV absolutely reflects culture, but I think it would naive to say TV doesn't influence culture.

Went to school with a former winner, they were in the year above. I didn't know them but a family members claim to fame is punching them in the face.

No television show should ever require or even need "aftercare".

Just my opinion but elan looks and acts a Lil on the gay or Bi side I could b way off but ya to me it seems that way 😅 it's not bad but they are in a show worth straight men and women or some women are bi but I haven't seen a gay or bi man dating women on there

While men are just as deserving of a positive and respectful environment we also have to remember the correlation of taking your own life and being a violent offender or predator a lot of them don’t see another way out of a mess they created. That doesn’t make it any less of a mental health epidemic ,but it’s something to be considered.

As someone who is bi, not everyone is homophobic. This narrative is annoying especially when a lot of people apart of the lgbtqia+ are constantly putting heterosexual people down. This is why people mostly dislike the rainbow community. I understand inclusivity but I don’t disagree with LGBTQIA+ only or heterosexual only spaces.

At what point do we decide that we are grown adults and have to take care of our own mental health? No one can be looked after and baby say their whole life. As adults we have to look after ourselves at some point.

I do think standards have moved on with the times to a point. I’m 40 and grew up with the beauty standards of the early 2000’s standards. Now they were harsh! Heroin sheek and huge fake books and bleach blonde hair was the absolute beauty standard.

@carolineparkinson7214

8 sessions of therapy is 'normal' for a workplace 'wellbeing' policy - it's a drop in the ocean for a significant life event. 6 months, up to 2 sessions a week would be more credible.

Sorry, they’re not employees - It’s a game show.
A game show which they auditioned to be on, in competition with others to win a prize or raise their public profile. Their mental health & capacity to navigate the world is irrelevant. Wanna know why I’m not on social media? Coz I know it wouldn’t be good for MY mental health. So I abstain. They have a choice too

Is it true that Megan Markle, jamela jahill and a few others were relentlessly bullying Caroline Flack online and in DMs??? So feral and tragic.

Love Island wasn't cancelled as the deaths would have probably happened anyway sadly. The death linked to the JK show happened as a direct result of what occurred on the show and drove the guy to take his life.

Whilst I agree with the power dynamic point, I think I differ in opinions with you on its existence within the two shows. Am I right in thinking that you don't believe an agenda is being pushed by the team behind Love Island? If so, that's where I would disagree. I think the agenda is just being pushed more subtly by the entire production crew in unison, as to obfuscate that an agenda is being pushed full stop. Instead of giving the majority of the agenda pushing responsibility to a central figurehead like Jeremy Kyle, who clearly espouses the ideas, the agenda is pushed through the editing, the commentary from Iain Sterling, the presentation from insert relevant show presenter here , the sound team that appeal to the viewers' thoughts and feelings (think of the point of a laugh track), etc... Because the roles are so dispersed, it obfuscates the idea that an agenda exists because if you were to confront each individual on their pushing of an agenda, you'd struggle, as they only hold a small percentage of the role in pushing it, creating plausible deniability. It's an incredibly complicated system.

What the agenda is, I'm not sure, as I don't watch the show.

Also, I wrote this prematurely, before having finished the video. I may have just rehashed exactly what you say in your conclusion, so apologies if that's the case!

had to switch from my tv to my desktop to leave this comment, but I just wanted to say - thank you so much for bringing up the sc*icide rate among men and making it a point to discuss a few of the general mental health challenges men experience. We've come a very long way in the last couple of decades with pointing out toxic masculinity and demanding better (obviously a very good thing), but seem to still be stuck in the stone ages in regards to helping men who are suffering from their (learned) toxic beliefs.

Yapping here, but whenever I think about the general vibe towards men's mental health and suffering, I remember that article Reductress posted on instagram making fun of the "male loneliness crisis." People were in the comments laughing at men for crying and literally telling them to go kts. I left a comment calling them out for being obviously toxic (and referred to my own experience with near s* attempts) and slammed for it. By a "feminist" community of all places, lol. But yeah, to this day I basically never hear anyone even make a passing reference to this topic, so seeing it here warmed my heart a little :)
