The Empire Strikes Back… 45 Years Later

these videos are so entertaining and i don’t even care about star wars that much but now i want to rewatch the original trilogy

I've always found it hilarious that following the euphoric reaction to Star Wars in 1977, the critics response to Empire was less favorable. Empire was so obviously superior to it's great predecessor in almost every respect, yet many just couldn't see it. Empire had a deeper story, more evolved characters, better performances across the cast, a more impactful ending with shocking revelations and still critics didn't get it one bit. The basis of their misguided arguments was that Empire was too dark, slower paced and didn't have a conclusive ending. Few of them understood the purpose of the movie. I was quite young when it came out and even back then I loved it even more than the first one. Empire was, is and always will be my favorite movie. It defined my childhood and interest in science fiction. I just find the ignorance of movie critics quite irritating at times. Their subjective and narrow minded views often undermine the success of great movies. Thankfully, Empire has used time to elevate itself to one of the greatest movies and movie sequels of all time.

This is wild. When I was a kid, 45 year old films were mostly unwatchable. They were black and white stage plays that were filmed. With stilted acting and childish dance scenes. Heck, even 20 year old films were severely dated.

I don’t know it’s rather a romantic way of thinking about George Lucas as he was quite happy to build a second Death Star and sell fluffy bears to children in order to keep it as a cash cow. The first tow films at the time were incredible but when the 3rd came out when i was 10 i was underwhelmed by it particularly as the comics of that time about Star Wars showed incredible stories around the main characters.

Dude, not every single scene in a film has to expand a character's arc.

Reading the title of this and asking " why did the empire wait until 45 years later to strike back?"

Still the best Star Wars movie, everyone pretty much agrees.

Sorry but the idea of Luke being responsible for a bunch of rebels getting killed because he failed at the Force at the battle of Hoth is too dark, even for Empire. Also if anything that would make Luke become more susceptible to the Dark Side…Failing as a Jedi/Yoda being too hard on him and thus giving into Vader’s offer at the end and just being another Anakin/Vader character arc. Anakin thinking he’s failing to protect Padme, the Jedi Council being too hard on him.

I always thought that at the beginning of the movie Vader thought Luke Skywalker was somebody using his name for clout, that he was someone trying to falsely claim Anakin Skywalker's heroic Clone Wars legacy and use it for the rebel cause, and so Vader was determined to find this imposter and punish him for daring to do this. But then he finds out from Palpatine in that moment that no, this is actually his son, and that's when he shifts to wanting to turn Luke to his cause and join with him.

This is how I used to do reports in junior high: basically re-copy another report—in this case, Empire of Dreams—and just change the wording a bit and call it my own!

I'd argue Vader's shuttle landing scenes are one of the few, if not the only special edition changes that are actually detrimental to the film. The added, slow paced landing sequences just destroy the frantic, breakneck pacing of the rest of the chase, and absolutely no one was confused about how Vader ended up back on his ship, since he clearly tells and adjutant to prepare his shuttle.

Hard to believe that it has been so long. Too bad he wasn't so passionate about the prequels.

These creators came up with amazing concepts but it took outside directors who understood how to film DRAMA to give us their greatest installments.

Problem with the falcon not working is that it’s done because the script says it’s not working until the end and I think that really hits the movie hard because while yes it is a good movie I can’t call this one the best of the original trilogy or even the best Star Wars movie it has a lot of great stuff in it but there is also some stuff that really hold it back a bit from truly being the best I think Luke whining again like in a new hope, Han having to learn again to fight for something bigger than himself, leia pretty much doing either nothing or very little, the fact the falcon doesn’t work because the script says it doesn’t work, or the fact the movie really doesn’t live up to its name are big reasons why even though it’s still a good movie all that stuff holds it back from being the best of the original trilogy

Vader isn't dumb in this scene but great video overall. Minor critique on here is at times you seem too nitpicky.

Jim Hensons Yoda was sooo much better, than later CGI has ever been. AND the character is so much more of a Zen-Master oppossed to the later combat-dwarf from the prequels.
When Luke gets into the cave, Yoda warns him about what to take with him. Yoda at that point, would not be the Jedi to carry any weapon at all. Peace!

I was a young boy and this was my second film in a theatre (first one was ET), so... I was kinda impressed.

The best star wars movie.

If I could transport myself to any moment in any Star Wars movie, it would be the end of Empire Strikes Back with Luke and Leia looking outside their ship, hell-bent on tracking down Boba Fett and rescuing Han.

Doesn't seem bad to me "Because of my father i guess". It seemed to me like he sincerely wants to honor his father at his core but his resolve is being tested and he's frustrated so he lashes out with that tone

Luke succeeds in one respect: he decides he would rather die than turn to the dark side.

Hot take . Empire is my least favorite of the original films , and out of the originals and prequels, it lands at 5 for me

Ah how nice hearing this kid talk about Empire Strikes Back when I remember playing with the toys back in 1983 probably over a decade before this kid was even born

Seeing the battle of Hoth being a victory, in the sense that the bulk of the rebel forces escape thanks in part to Luke's skill on the battle field was important. If he failed in that, his introduction in ESB would have been failure, after failure, after failure. We would start thinking, "why do we route for this guy?". I'm all for characters earning their moments, that's the main reason I despise the sequels. He has to have a win, some small win. His co-pilot gets wiped out, his snow speeder gets shot down and literally stepped on and crushed by the mighty foot of the Empire. Taking down the AT-AT at least lets us as the audience feel like this guy isn't a total fuck up. I think the balance is fine as it was.

I absolutely hate the fight between Darth Vader and Uncle Ben in A New Hope but luckily someone here on YouTube made it the way it should be by using CGI which is amazing but The Empire Strikes Back is the best film of the original trilogy
