The GENIUS of Season 2’s Cyclicality - Overanalyzing Breaking Bad

Video Overview & Insights

Today at the Mystery Shack, we continue our retrospective analysis of Breaking Bad and Season 2 Episode 13 - ABQ. Join me in overanalyzing every single detail of the show and generally nerd out about anything and everything!

Breaking Bad is the greatest show of all time, and it’s my favorite show of all time as well.
I have probably watched it all the way through at least 10 times.

But I have to be honest… The plane crash is by far the worst plotline in the show.
Narratively, tonally, it is so out of step with the rest of the show and the rest of the story.
It feels way too grandiose and self-indulgent to have a 9/11 level event happen because of Walt.

They should’ve scaled this down into a massive multi-car accident or something more believable.

The scale is just too big compared to the rest of the show. It doesn’t feel grounded or realistic enough, compared to the entire narrative.

Walter did kill her but so she killed herself as well doing the drugs in the first place, Jessies fault as well.

34:30 I don’t think this is 100% unusual. I had a mentor/father figure guy who had fought cancer for about 15 years. His wife knew and she told me but that was pretty much it he never told his mom and I think he told his sisters when he was pretty late in the game. If I ever get cancer I probably won’t say anything either.

I'm not certain I ever noticed that Jesse's duplex exterior has the same color scheme as the interior of Los pollos hermanos. I'm sure it's a coincidence but still

My theory about the original cleanup scene with Saul is that he probably wouldve arrived alongside an associate akin to Kuby or Huell (or even Mike himself couldve been inevitably created for this purpose). I can picture the other guy doing the cleanup while Saul delivers some poor attempts at comedy while trying to keep Jesse together.

I always felt really awful for Jane's dad. Seeing his haunted, vacant look when he sees Jane's gone is just brutal.

13:50 you have to remember how different the internet was 15-20 years ago. Giving out your real name was a NO NO for the longest time because we didn't have systems built on profiting from obtaining your personal info, and we were much more concerned about Internet safety.

During my first watch of this episode, I didn't catch the codes Donald was saying, but 17,000 is what caught my ear, especially when he said it a second time, and I thought "oh no," then we see the airline collision above Walt.

An interesting parallel Stu from Connection through Reaction mentioned: Mr. White very deliberately gets turned from his back to his side before his life-extending operation. I have so much more appreciation for the show after watching these analyses and connecting the most miniscule details.

21:10: Reflecting, for the upteenth time, on how completely prepped and unfazed Gus was at the reveal that Heisenberg was DEA Officer Hank's relative, makes me suspect that Gus may already have known of Hank's family connection but was simply visiting to confirm whether Hank was a complicit dirty cop accomplice.

This show stil keeps revealing plot layers.

25:12 I'm surprised you didn't point out how she is wrapped up in blue energy with a black energy having a tighter grip on her.
Considering I never picked up on the color representation in the show until I watched your videos I'm shocked you didn't point out the blue and the black in this obvious self-portrait for Jane

Until watching this specific video I never overanalyzed that portrait but it seems fairly obvious taking your points that the blue swirls represent the good that's around her trying to Hold her but the black has already Gotten closer and obviously has a tight grip

Sometimes I think the most evil thing Walt did was not just causing Jane's death... it was allowing Jesse to be crushed with guilt on waking up next to her corpse. How different would everything be if Walt got Mike on immediately after she rolled her eyes and got either Jane or Jesse out of there.

I know he doesn't 'cause he's said as much and it would be absurd, but even Eiichiro Oda doesn't have every single detail planned ahead of time. But a genius writer can make you think the smallest things were always in the script.

About the question about how the original Saul version of this episode would’ve gone another breaking bad breakdown series ‘Better watch TV’ said that it might not have been so different with Saul playing it straight and apparently it might’ve been the last time we saw Saul in the series

Walter had genuine love for Jessie? Walter could have cared less for Jessie, to Walter Jessie was just a tool, a pawn he could manipulate nothing else, all the trouble Walter went for Jessie wasn't because he cared for Jessie, it was because Jessie was useful to him

Jesse holding onto Walter in the bedroom really reminds me of the painting "Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan"

Just sheer horror and regret over what he's done to his own son... Idk if it was purposeful, but fuck you Vince...

So I’m a bit of an aviation geek, and back in 1989, Aeroméxico Flight 498 collided midair with a small private aircraft over a Los Angeles Suburb. This accident was partly blamed on the lack of an onboard TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System), which Walter brings up later when trying to justify the accident. But the most interesting part to me is that the air traffic controller directing Aeroméxico Flight 498 at the time was named Walter White.

Love this series! Keep it up!
