The Gilded Age begins in 1882 with young Marian Brook (Jacobson) moving from rural Pennsylvania to New York City after the death of her father to live with her thoroughly old money aunts Agnes van Rhijn (Baranski) and Ada Brook (Nixon). Exposed to a world on the brink of the modern age, will Marian follow the established rules of society, or forge her own path?

I read a book about the foundation of NY. It was an incredible book written by a lawyer, born in the XIX century. That masterpiece could be turn into a great script, there are some good stories about the people, the culture and the city.

This is so contrived: Fellowes should have stuck with Downton Abbey.

A great HBO series: 'The Gilded Age'. It is not based on "The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today" by Mark Twain but seems to draw on it for inspiration.

Great series. Great casting - except for Meryl Streep's daughter. She just smiles stupidly all the time. Zero acting talent.

As an actual Van Rhijn I call BS none of us come from any money. 😆

I haven't watched it yet but my first impression is that this had huge potential - the idea, the setting, New York in that era... but it didn't use its potential. I think the visuals could have been waaaay more exciting and less mondane. It seems very toned down for a city that was the center of the world at that time period. I never say this but in this case I would have liked a more polished and fantastical look for the show.

Is there a story or is it just some loose scenes for the aesthetic of it all

I'm loving this! As a 65 year young woman who grew up in Bew York, its amazing to see this well done time capsule series. I recognize the neighborhood and Central Park was my playground as well. Great story and I love the rich elaborate homes and the clothing is breathtaking.

Cringeworthy ! The attempts at witty " Oscar Wilde " type conversations are
pitiful.....Sets and costumes look good I admit but that's about it. !

I loved Downton Abbey a lot more than this one.

Omg. It’s so fabulous. Better than Downton.

It took me 3 or 4 episodes to begin to appreciate it but I'm glad I watched both seasons and I'm looking forward to season 3.
I loved Downton Abbey so much so the bar was high.
Downton Abbey > A++
The Gilded Age > B+

I think I'll watch this show

I love that the way they speak in this movie is actually how sophisticated Americans would have spoken 140 years ago.

For some reason, Hollywood finds it near impossible to portray class without use of an English accent and all Americans speak like it’s 2005, no matter when the piece is set.

@fabsmaster5309

I absolutely love this show! The biggest surprise for me was Cynthia Nixon. She has never been a favorite of mine, but I now realize that it has been the roles/characters she has played. She is WONDERFUL as Ada! This is the perfect role for her, and she absolutely shines!

The most beautiful material ever. Fashion should love the guilded age.

@moniquecovington161

It will be a much better serie if they add for example the president and the First Lady of that era 👌👌😂

@mehdielghazouani2371
@

Looks so good. I feel like some of them should have still retained a little British accent at this era though. It would have added another level of credibility.

@DigitalDistortion
@

what?

@buddykiller-b9q
@

This looks very promising...but even with Downton's creator at the helm, Americans just can't muster the same silvertongued wit and charm that the Granthams and Crawleys possessed
