After reading over 300 fantasy books, I’ve narrowed down the best series every fan needs to dive into. From epic high fantasy to dark, character-driven sagas, these are the stories that stand out above the rest. Whether you’re looking for your next binge read or curious which series truly deserve the hype, this list will guide you to the greatest fantasy adventures.
The Dark Tower: BOOOOOOOOOOOO. I thought it ranked from unoriginal to just plain silly. Roland as a fantasy gunslinger sounds contrived, the characters from the Drawing of 3 weren't likable to me, especially the one that spoke like she was from a bad 70s Shaft movie. When Stephen King shows up as a character in the book, really? The ending was a copout. The best book was the one that didn't contribute to the story at all, perhaps it was book 4 where Roland recounts a story from his life. Sorry, no disrespect meant but it didn't sit well with me at all especially compared to everything else on this list.

7:06 - 10 The Empire Series
The Wheel of Time as a whole I have a hard time rating very highly. The beginning of the series is fantastic but it really lost it's way in the few books before Robert Jordan passed away and Brandon Sanderson had a huge mess to clean up in order to wrap that series up. An entire major faction was essentially forgotten about for a significant portion of the series and then force fed back to us at the end, it wasn't for dramatic effect, it was just bad writing. I often wonder how much declining health for Jordan factored into the series falling apart in the later half of the series.

The Deverry novels by Katherine Kerr have always been a favourite of mine. I like Robin Hobb too .

I need to finish memory sorrow & thorn been having trouble finding the third book….but i really enjoyed the series so far.

Honestly, Wheel of time good vs bad fighting throughout the timeline was somewhat what I thought Assassin's Creed could've been when that series first started before it became just micro transaction nightmare.

@davidblandin8139My Favourite book is 'The Curse of Chalon' by Lois McMaster Bujold the first book of the five god series think of it like Robin Bobb but better
David Gemmell's Jerusalem Man series is in the same vein as the Dark Tower and definitely worth checking out.
Raymond E Feist's 'King's Buccaneer' is really what got me into Fantasy but I recommend the Empire series he wrote with Janny Wurts
Steven Burst's Vlad Talos or Dragaeran books are also worth looking up
Little suggestion when giving us the titles, slow down. You say the titles so fast that I don't know what they are and you flash the book cover for 1 second. I found myself pausing the video as quickly as possible to get the titles.
@MastaholicI just do not understand the love for Wheel of Time. First book is good but the series just becomes so boring. Malazan, First Law and GoT are all much better.
@Valdrexi'm a tower junkie (I read the whole series every year or so like a bible). I'm about 200 pages into Wheel of Time and digging it so far... I think you've nailed the list (based on your top two).
@ianmizel4706LotR is "predictable" now because of how long it's been around. Silly to say that about a series while admitting it was groundbreaking. Those two concepts contradict eachother

@SWEETIE-y8wPerfectly summed up on the Brandon Sanderson books. I steamrolled through the first 2-3. THen rhythm of war i was forcing myself to muscle through. got halfway and was so done with the Tower area / plot. finally got back and finished it after like 6 months. But i don't like when books feel like a "chore". Still watching the video, so maybe you'll mention it, but i found "Theft of swords" series during that time and THAT was such a relief after such demanding books. Amazing series
@seanryan8341I respect why ASOIAF isn't on here. Still, not seeing that series in a top fantasy list is like not seeing Hyperion on a sci-fi list. It's pretty much essential reading for the genre. Regardless, I can respect your decision. Definitely going to check out some of the series on this list!
@jonnyboy4999I adore the writing of R.E .Howard, always have. The Conan books are not only incredibly entertaining, but are also chock full of original ideas (written in the 1930's) Also Howard's writing style is very evocative.
@jonnyboy1001To not include Lord of the Rings as a top pick seems odd to me. Just giving it an honourable mention doesn’t do it justice at all.
@richx9035When I read The Eye of the World (WoT book 1) in the early 90s, I thought it was one of the best books ever. It went down hill from there and never fully recovered. Game of Thrones is amazing, but Martin is too old and slow to finish it. Pity. At my age (70), Jordan and Martin have taught me to never start reading an incomplete series.
@dondotson598The ridiculously disappointing Deus Ex Machina ending of The Last Stand turned me off Stephen King forever (and that book had been highly recommended by many people online so it's hard to trust recommendations for him again) and so I never had any motivation to put time into The Dark Tower however good it might have seemed at first... I did really enjoy the Wheel of Time series though, it was one of my favourite book series growing up.

I‘m currently reading the Licanius-Trilogy by James Islington. It‘s one of my favourite series of all time, so maybe check it out. Also his second series, the Hierarchy-Series is really great so far.

@tehdiiLast year I was able to read 50 SF books. How in the world were you able to read with your eyes 300!? It is like one book a day. And modern books are not slim either.

@matthewking2158Richard Swan’s books are great but the audiobooks don’t have the best narrators. I wish I had just read the physical books. The male reader that did some of the last book was very good though.
@DrMetalpinI think I like Rosamond Pike’s narration on the Wheel of Time books better than the other readers. I wish she’d do the rest of the books, but I’m assuming she won’t now that the TV series was cancelled.

@chazkhaira6621I highly recommend The deathgate series : Dragon Wing by Margret Weiss & Tracy Hickman in a 7 book series with each book kept me captivated right through till the end
