I lived in NYC when I was very young, and always was, and still am mesmerized by the subway. The fact that it connects so many areas, so conveniently, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year makes it among the best rapid transit systems in the world.

That being said, it does face some notable challenges that I would like to see more effort taken to address.

Right now, the only rail expansion project under construction in the tri-state area is the Metro North Penn Station Access project. However, this is more of an infill station project as the routes will use existing right of way. I wish the city and state would take more initiative to expand the subway, and do it in a timely and cost-effective manner. 2nd Avenue Phases 2 and 3 should've already been under construction before even Phase 1 was finished. Instead, there is no work on either. The outer boroughs have seen the most growth in recent years, and there are multiple overcrowded bus routes that would be ripe for an expansion of rail service. However, no such projects are even past the early planning stages yet.

The city also faces the challenge of there being fewer qualified manufacturers of subway cars than there used to be. The equipment is so highly customized and shares no commonality with anything used elsewhere. Alstom and Kawasaki are the only two companies they work with now. Both charge top dollar, as they know there is little competition, and the city will pay any amount. This makes is harder to replace aging equipment, and harder to expand the fleet to allow for expansions or increases in service.

The actual reason for the movable platforms at 14th/Union Square on the 4/5/6 trains, is because the cars were shorter in length when it was originally built and the platforms were wider. When the cars got longer they had to narrow the platforms. They installed the movable platforms to fill the gap at the middle doors in the cars.

If you've ever ridden subways in other large industrialized cities in the world (besides the US), you'd realize the NYC subway is not even in the top 20.
However, at the same time it is one of the greatest things about the city.

The Chambers St Station on the
A/C line, is the World Trade Center on the E, and Park Place on the 2 on the West Side of Lower Manhattan.
Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall Chambers St, are the 4/5/6 and the J/Z are on the East Side of City Hall in lower Manhattan, City Hall on the R, is pretty much in the middle on the West Side of City Hall
They never renamed the Stations once they were merged into the MTA.

A MAJOR problem with funding for the MTA run Subway and busses, is all the riders that have been cheating to ride for free and bitching about the service.

Can you own a car, not do normal maintainence, and then complain that it's breaking down to much?

I think the most impressive is Berlin. There is "only" 4 million people. BUT there are TWO metro systems U-bahn and S-Bahn with like 350 stations together. Huge network.

Being from Los Angeles y’all don’t know how amazing this system is. I’m in absolute awe every time I visit New York. This is a world class public transit system and I absolutely love it.

NYC subway is great, but it can be so much better with more care, maintenance and especially funding... its a shame really because the potential is massive...

The map shown at 0:57 includes the Path system in New Jersey to the left of NYC and across the Hudson River. That is not part of the NYC subway system or the MTA.

15:02 one major foresight error, how the IRT lines (particularly the 4/5/6/7) became the most crowded and well used in the entire system, but use the smaller, narrower train sets. I’ll never get my head around that paradox

No it's not. The NYC subway has never and will never be the greatest in the world. It is dirty, unsafe and never arrives on time. It's also expensive. I would place it quite low in the list of subway systems and I really don't appreciate this video trying to make it look nice and fancy.

NYC is lucky to be such a young city with practically no history. When you look at other major cities like London, Rome, Paris, they have constant problems with expanding because excavations are finding priceless historical sites.

NYC SUBWAY is the pits! Delays, slow speed are the characteristics of the subway!

New Yorks Subway is a ghetto hellhole that that would make me say "no thanks, I'll stick with my car." That and I did go on it as a kid and it was so dirty and disgusting, and my dad was like "Never stand close to the edge, there are crazy people who will push you in front of the train." So yeah...and with bad bus experience too, I would nevet support public transit over just driving a car to get places. Though since New York is an authoritarian place where a loft the size of one of my house's bedrooms cost like $2000 a month rent, I wouldn't ever live there to begin with.
