lustig zu hören, ich bin in Berlin aufgewachsen und hab bis zu meinem 25. Lebensjahr dort gelebt. Vor 20 Jahren bin ich dann weggozogen und komme nur einige Male für ein paar Tage wieder nach Berlin. Alles was du hier erzählst, war schon früher so😂. Einziger Unterschied - mit den Wohungen war es früher vermutlich einfacher und billiger.

Regarding winter in Berlin. As a matter of perspective, I live in the rust belt. Berlin winters are much easier to deal with than the winters where I live.

I'm German and lived in Berlin for a very long time. I don't share your opinion about staring at strangers. It's not normal to be stared at by strangers on the S-Bahn. But I agree with you that Germans like to look others in the eye when they're talking to them. Germans find it very strange when you don't look someone in the eye while they're speaking.

I don't think Munich was really in the running for capitol since it's also not very centrally placed, it's down in the south-east of Germany. Munich might be a major economic hub in Germany and the surrounding area is just gorgious but a capitol city, appart from captiol of Bavaria ;) , it's just not (no hate, lived ther for over a decade and loved it). "Mia san Mia" is great but doen't fit a federal capitol ;)

Mich interessiert was Ihnen aus den USA berichtet wird. Ich verfolge mit wachsender Aufmerksamkeit Nachrichten über die US Administration. Sie sind vermutlich auch beunruhigt über die politischen Veränderungen seit dem zweiten Amtsantritt von Trump. Ich gucke und höre mir das als Sozialwissenschaftler an. Ich hätte die USA gerne besucht, aber es kam nie dazu. Heute habe ich Angst dorthin zureisen, da ich Knast fürchte. The German stare is a thing I can't really relate to. As a citizen, I have never observed, experienced and definetely not practiced it, as I would consider it offensive to look at people persistently for more than a fleeting second.

Berlin war früher sauberer, das hat sich etwa 2005 bis 2010 sehr geändert. Es könnte damit begonnen haben das es Gewohnheit wurde Sachen die nicht mehr benötigt wurden vor die Häuser zu stellen. Das ist in manchen Städten auch üblich, aber nur an 1 oder 2 Tagen im Jahr und die Sachen werden von Entsorgern abgeholt. In Berlin nicht, dafür gibt es hier Sammelstellen der BSR wo man Sperrmüll hinbringen kann der dann kostenlos entsorgt wird. Leider wurde das hier anscheinend mißverstanden und viele meinten nun sie können auch ihren Müll rausstellen. Begünstigt wahrscheinlich auch durch dem Zuzug von vielen aus anderen Kulturen wo man es mit dem Müll nicht so genau nimmt und die diese Möglichkeit gerne angenommen haben. Ich wohne seit einigen Jahren in Randberlin wo das kein Problem ist.

i know, winter is cold and dark and so on and so on. but think about on another way, maybe; in florida, we all know, there are no real seasons but maybe the hurricaneseason. here in germany, you got the chance, to have all 4 seasons of the year! btw, make a holiday in the alps, go skiing. thats winter, too ...and get a friend with you to visit the berliner weihnachtsmärkte...🥸😉

I'm from Berlin, and the city has become filthy over the past 15 to 20 years. It wasn't like that before. North Neukölln and Kreuzberg have always been run-down. But now the filth is everywhere. It's unbelievable how many ignorant and selfish people have moved to Berlin. It's become disgusting.

You can lead a very comfortable life in Berlin, with many people nearby whom you trust, if you don’t have long distances to travel. For me it’s easy: I can walk to my workplace, I know my neighbors, and I have little stress. If I want to do something, there’s a wide range of options, and going into the city center is no problem. But if you have longer distances, life in Berlin can be very exhausting: the streets are often congested, public transport has disruptions, and late at night you might not even make it back home to the outskirts.

My theorie about the German stare: Germans love the quite. Many non-Germans or people raised in other cultures are loud in public. And if you are and talk loudly, you a) annoy the stereotypical German and b) you invite the us into your conversation.
If the staring happens if you are just minding your business alone, then I can only imagine this on public transport if you are in the line of sight.

I have been to Berlin and I still have had small talk with people like museum staff, hotel staff, restaurant staff, and someone bringing their dog to park. The only difference I found is not to small talk with absolute strangers so that means small talking to a random passersby on the street.

Berlin is definitely not for you. Do yourself and Berlin a favor. And move somewhere that suits you.

Leipzig, is a lovely city, not too big and pleasant to eat and drink in.

I'm German, have been to Berlin several times, but I would never want to live there.
To me it's the least enjoyable city in Germany.

You should have lived in Berlin in the late 80's. It was awesome. The music and underground scene were off the hook. Soviet Troops and the Red Army Faction were there. Germans were ready to fight to stay free. All I saw in my last visit was trendy shops and salad-eating soy boys. What happened?

As for the airport: most intercontinental flights take off and land in Frankfurt and Munich, as these are Lufthansa’s hubs and Lufthansa is a member of the Star Alliance, which leads to numerous codeshare agreements with other Star Alliance members. This is the main reason why Berlin-Brandenburg Airport will never become a major international airport, let alone the largest in Germany.

Yeah, that's right, Berlin is dirty (but not everywhere), and the winters are really lousy. In January, the wind seems to blow straight from the Urals. But it has this special “vibe” that you won't find in Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, or Cologne.

I lived in Berlin in the early 2000's and one of the biggest things I noticed was that it took a lot longer for people to open up to you but in the end there friendship was more true.
