I lean more toward the skeptical side when it comes to medication (for myself and my dog) but like, my dog will try to chew off his damn paw if he misses a day of apoquel (allergy medicine). Also I make sure he stays up to date with heartworm and tick prevention, vaccines, etc.
I hate how much it costs, Zoetis seems to care more about profits than pets and their humans, don't even get me started on the private equity firms buying up vet offices!But I can't imagine blaming my vet! My vet is amazing!
I guess that's the way I feel about doctors, too. I don't blame the doctor treating me, most of the time they're doing their best. I blame the system that they're forced to try and operate within. 🤷🏼♀️ (Dr. Elizabeth Potter is one of my heroes)

I’ve always tried to be there for the vet visit, and be there with my pet for the checkup, but whenever I couldn’t come for whatever reason and I’ve just delivered and picked my pet up after, and paid - the vet always called me to tell me what they did, how my pet is doing, what they found, the diagnosis etc and given recommendations and we would agree on the best treatment for them. I cannot imagine not being involved with my pet’s care - and at least in Norway the vets I’ve met actively involve the pets owner

I am 47 and tired now... perimenopause is an interesting time... I only wanna live until my body gets to be like a crunchy rubber band. I has spent my adult life with several autoimmune conditions and CKD, cancer survivor, and more than 48 procedures (over 15 yrs). I just fight on and I am stable because my doctors on the team listen to me, and research the latest treatments. My dog the most adorable terrier - border collie mix is allergic to some things we found in her 4th year because of ectopic dermatitis that showed up. I give her allergy meds and upgraded her food. Changed our lives. I love Simparica Trio as well. I recommend everyone gets good pet health insurance to offset the cost of vet bills. Totally worth it!

I find myself in a very lonely place with regards to pet vaccines. I ask for the DHPPi/L every 3 years and separate Pi and L every year in between. I don't mind vaccinating but i dont like over-vaccinating given how many animals iv'e seen look miserable after combined vaccines. I don't delay first vaccines like most would because Ive learn the assumption that all puppies have passive maternal immunity is wrong and the worst that can happen is that it doesn't work. If there is a licensed vaccine for use at or before 5 weeks of age I will take that becasue at 5 weeks most puppies haven't even started developing a fear circuit and response becasue they are still learning what they should normally expect from the world.
Early‑life medical experiences — including the timing and handling of first vaccinations — can correlate with later behaviours like separation distress, fearfulness, reactivity, excessive vocalisation, and compulsive tendencies. It’s not the vaccine itself, but the stress of the experience during a sensitive developmental stage, which varies by breed. Even clinic design has an impact on the experience. We also know that early brain wiring is experience‑dependent: unused synapses are pruned, and critical periods shape lifelong emotional regulation. Given that, it shouldn’t be controversial to explore how a poorly handled immunisation visit could influence attachment style, coping strategies, and stress responses. And it’s worth remembering that far more dogs are euthanised for behaviour problems than for any vaccine‑preventable disease.

Banning a specific breed is not the way to go. Banning unhealthy, selective breeding - often what's demanded by different "official" pet associations for show pets, is. It is mainly those awful requirements that's led to aggressive selective breeding without any at all thought given to the health of the animal.

I'm 55 minutes in so far and there is not much I disagree with her on; I own a pet supply store and I focus on holistic health and wellness on nutrition. The only thing I disagree with her on so far to this point is the nutritional aspect. I have been raw feeding and preparing my own raw food for the last 11 years and my dogs have never been healthier. I do disagree that you have to cook the food for pets and those of us who disagree do not feel that cooking depletes the protein; we feel it's depletes, the naturally occurring vitamins and minerals that you're cooking out of the food. She's right, protein is protein. You can't cook protein out of food; you can, however, cook out the level of vitamins and minerals that a dog requires. There is a reason why traditional kibble adds supplement packets. There is a reason why gently cooked also adds supplement packets. There is a reason why raw does not.... 💯 Literally just had my 10-year-old German Shepherd at the vet for blood work and my vet said that his Labs didn't look like he had a senior German Shepherd on paper. No depreciation of his liver or kidney levels, which at his age naturally starts to occur as part of the aging process. He doesn't look 10. He doesn't act 10 and to be honest what you put in is what you get out. That being said, I don't think raw is for everyone, and that's why there are freeze dried and gently cooked options as well as better quality kibble available. Think the real heartache I have is when veterinarians push the big food agenda of hills, Purina and Royal Canin -- which are just literal bags of gluten, corn and soy filled with synthetics to make up the proper nutritional balance.

I never actually lived on a farm but I grew up in a very rural area and the fact that he had never been involved in, or even heard of, 4-H absolutely blew my mind. It was just such a common thing that everyone where I lived did at least to some extent when they were growing up.

As a veterinary technician, I really appreciate this interview. It helps shed light on very common and pervasive issues within the veterinary field.
Issues surrounding understaffing, burn out, client aggression towards staff, low salaries compared to the level of education required and money spent on education are all super prevalent in the field globally. These issues definitely deserve to be discussed and brought to the forefront.
I also think highlighting the lengths we go to in the veterinary field to take care of our patients in a fear free manner is very nice to see.

Not an anti-VAX myself, but my golden child, old girl developed a luckily benign tumor from repeat shots to her neck. Then when we went back in for her update shots, had a negative reaction landing her in the kitty ER for 2 days. Terrified to get her those shots again but because I’m not an expert, I have no idea if the risk is worth the potential benefits for her

Incredibly greatful that heartworm and rabies are not a problem in the UK (to cold for heartworm atm) and due to vaccines and being an island its been basically eradicated rabies.

I love when my vet shares all the rads, testing and photos of what they see but thats more I love learning and love seeing the information. I have never thought my vets were in it for the money but I have gone to practices where the vet was burned out... and you can tell by the care..

@jnice6263Loved this interview so much❤ Cats are often so misunderstood. Keep in mind they have scent glands in their paws and will often scratch couches and things because that is likely a place where they pick up a lot of YOUR scent so they want to add their scent to yours in a way of making a “family” scent. It may not even necessarily be about the texture. My cat never scratched on anything except a chair I always sat in. The rest of the time she was laying on me. I miss her dearly.

@xellontherunAs a vet tech, thank you so much for making veterinary medicine more known by bringing Dr. Hammond with you. We are so similar to human medicine and carry so much knowledge as we try and bring more love to this field. I have been a vet tech for 2 years now and am honestly so tired, but I absolutely love it. We do SO much, I do hope that we get what we deserve in the long run (and yes, I'm talking about money).
@jaeden5798The vet makes more money from keeping your pet alive and well into old age. It also means the vet can see your pet regularly. Since they would love pets to do the job then seeing your pet helps make their day.
@333hubeOur dog is allergic to chicken. We have to make sure that the kibble is chicken free or she’ll get ear infection.

@CoolyCat754When it comes to banning dogs I really wish we could correct the genetic abominations like cavies and french bulls but I 100% think pits should be banned. Over 70% of our bad bites we see and over 90% of all fatalities were caused by pits and when pits do go after someone those people usually die. I will NEVER be comfortable with a pit around and they are the only dog I have had to kill to prevent them from killing their victim. Heck, I used to clean up biohazard scenes for a while, mostly gun shot related, but EVERY SINGLE DOG ATTACK that was fatal were pits and they were some of the messiest scenes. I've seen pits up and maul their owners to death, i've seen little kids get pulled apart by two pits and those dogs NEVER let go so we have had to nearly decapitate several. I can think of no other dog that creates such a scene much less as many as we see with pits. Luckily pits are now banned in much of the area I used to work in so we are starting to see a lot less fatalities especially with small children.
@IamCaleumI was so glad to hear the talk about cat enrichment! I train my cats to do tricks, give them puzzles and we play different games. Cats are more trainable than you think! Another thing they love is a cat tent so they can hang safely outside
@suzannesmith26629:15 They unfortunately did not do that in any of my schools. Only reason I know what this means is because I recently graduated with a bachelors in biology and I learned this in an anatomy and physiology course 😭.
@CoolyCat754Dr Hammond has a lot of very good advice. Number one - be extremely reluctant to bandage an animal. I too have seen limbs lost on dogs that were bandaged and stayed in the vet clinic under veterinary supervision - it is just too easy to miss signs of loss of circulation until it is too late. Any every time I have seen a non-professional bandage an animal, the bandage is much too tight - never bandage at home!
@tomenglish77591In sweden in every place I've been to with my dogs for over 25 years and especially the latest 15 years i as the owner have stayed and all work has been done with my help... i have "restrained" my dogs myself when they needed ultrasound, ive had been there when they have done all physicals, if they never sedative I've have been in rhe room and sat on the floor all the time while they slept (my hunting dog has needed quite alot of things as she is prone to both ear and throat infection as is quite common as she has hanging ears and when they hurt they are of course more prone to smaller but more frequent thing's) she doesn't hurt animals that could hurt her but to run for hours that she is breed for in cold climate and bark, etc can make some of them more sore throat and if you don't treat them it's not pleasant and they can't do what they love the most.... so that dog has been very expensive even though she never broken a bone but had one hysterectomy and many check ups, many ear infections and throat infections and she is quite high strung, big, strong and extremely nice so she wouldn't even growl except when she senses a real threat to me or the teenage daughter's, she won't growl to protect herself though but struggle loose if anyone except me holds her! She also doesn't show the same protection instincts when the childrens father was home and she doesn't protect him really.... i didn't think she had it in me but I got a shock when she didn't let 2 salesmen into our house... we lived extremely rural and me and my then young teenager and older teenager both daughter's was home alone with me and I didn't expect anyone. But there are not easy to find our house so i just thought it was a friend that stopped by but they knocked and most people just call or you recognize the car..... so i opened the door and my dog went from happy to have company to standing between us with a deep low growl... my children were behind me and my dog in front of all of us and she didn't obey my command to stop growing and just stand there. So i understood that something was wrong because you couldn't get this dog to growl even if you tried before this. So i told them to not step a fot in my door and I also said that i couldn't listen to what they sold because my husband was on his way home and my dog was not going to let you come inside my home. So they went packing and thats happened 1 more time in a different situation that she didn't let 1 man come near me and she ignored my coomand and just watched him and stod between us and showed him that he couldn't take one step to me and that man was also very drunk....
I just thought that this is a sign that she will die for us if needed but I need to listen to her because clearly if a dog is the most gentle normally to just switch she sees/feels something i can't!
But if my ex was nearby she never reacted with the same level of protection.....
My daughter has a bigger kitten and me and my other daughter putt on a safe mini harnest and walked and played with her outside because she lives in the city and and she loved it, she is the first cat I've seen that did not react anything just started to walk the second we put her down!

@justicegriffith32462:32:29 Vultures probably could but they don't tend to go after live animals. They're carrion feeders. Red Tailed Hawks can only lift around half their body weight so they don't tend to go after cats (especially larger cats like Maine Coons). Larger raptors like Osprey can lift a bit more but probably cap out at around 5 lbs of lift weight. Few cats are that small, so most raptors (at least around me) leave cats alone. That said, if the cat gets too close to a nest raptors may very well go into attack mode. They can potentially seriously injure a cat.

@elizabethrbatsonMy cat started loosing weight, drinking alot, getting desperate for food and panting. hyperthyroidism, her metabolism was working overtime!. My boi started seeming off, peeing more.. at the vet we found out we caught him on the day his kidneys decided to die.. I no longer have my boi, but my 14 year old baby girl is going strong. ^^

@sadie4me2In my country open vet visits is the norm (as far as I'm aware). I've always gone in with my pet and helped hold them for vaccines and sometimes even when they draw blood. I was there too for ultrasounds. I would never ever think they do nothing, I think vets are amazing! They know how different bodies and systems work, what is good for one species but shouldn't be used in another, they see month old pets all the way to geriatric patients. They sre truly amazing.
