He became famous in the UK for his portrayal or Mr Darcy in the 90s BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, and the women and gays of the nation swooned when he came walking out of the lake in his clothes WET! It also why his character has the surname Darcy - the original book being inspired by P&P - and apparently Firth wanted to do the role as a joke to his past famous character.
