The OVO Curse: The Danger of Signing to Drake
Video Overview & Insights
Covering the so-called ''OVO curse''— a pattern where artists signed to Drake’s label rise fast, then fade just as quickly. From PartyNextDoor to iLoveMakonnen, this video breaks down what really happens when you sign to Drake, and why it might not be the blessing it seems.
Not a curse so much as a trap.

I don't think the talent on the roster is that special lol. They do as well as I'd respect them to.
@3HorusWhen is drizzy going to show up in L.A.?
@vinsemi9734who is here after PND Drake album. This isnt a real thing. PND bigger than ever before
@abdim123In fairness I think signing to an artist label sounds good on paper but a bad business decision. Looking at GOOD music and how poorly Ye treated some of his cohorts like Teyana Taylor, Big Sean, and Desiigner I don’t think it’s ever a good idea to sign to those types of labels. Because artist are more worried about their own careers than building the careers of other artists who are their investments. Signing to Drake is probably a bad move because of where his standing is and his goals to remain as top dog and the biggest out there. As the prime investment I don’t think he has much time to focus that energy on other upcoming artists or even pass the torch.
@jalenpurnell497Strange, because tons of artists have flourished from OVO and just by working with Drake generally. For example we've got PartyNextDoor, Smiley, Roy Woods, Majid Jordan, dvsn, etc. 🔥🔥
VERY successful artists. Not as big as Drake, but still very successful nonetheless.
Beyonce has done this exact same thing to multiple people
@chanelmonet1683Anyone here in September 😂😮 tbh this is not surprising because nobody didn’t want to be signed to drake especially the kind of person he is
@JamanipageThe weeknd definitely dodged a bullet by not being on ovo sweatshop. His career would've been like PND, Roy woods and dvsn shelved. Drake biting their sound
@amwelcomed_04Blackey vs OVO Clothing brands
Blackey > OVO
He signs employees. I don’t think it’s much deeper than that.
@namegoeshere1Comment section filled with haters 🥲
@9TalesBeatzBlackyspeakz is finally off drakes payroll? Never thought I’d see the day 😂
@doctorsunset18so the drake curse is partynextdoor having a number 1 album? where would he be without drake?
@kcity6541Just because you're a great artist does not mean you're going to be a great executive. Lil Wayne was not a great executive birdman was. That's why Young money was so successful because birdman was running Young money we thought Lil Wayne was but birdman on majority of it and when they needed anything on the business tip they went to birdman not Lil Wayne
@tuubu9115We boycotting that dummy
@prinbeto3210Are you tone def?😂wtf?!!!😂😂😂😂
@ogknowbodyOvo is a modern day bad boy
@timoujineveridgejr2493U really running out of topics and just copying other videos from 2015 eh
@tomsu8455So then Kendrick was not lying about Drake haha the plot thickens truths exposed when drake says what did I miss your own artist is who you missed
@pandaforceinc5189Ppl sleeping on Majid Jordan 🔥
@sharkyshark6760The OVO sweatshop videos have been done to death man..plz get some new material
I swear none of the stuff your talk about anymore is ever thought provoking or new information. Just regurgitated, surface level analysis as always
Of all the artists signed to Drake I’ve heard of maybe 3 of them
@papadaxlyThis is why you don't sign with an artist like Drake. Don't hitch your wagon to him. Let him promote you if he chooses but don't sign.
@christianjacque317The Diddy effect, catch the competion and kill them, while collect their royalty.
@terrencetaylor8196Shady Records entered the chat
@Andy-td8eoIt’s better to just collaborate and have a major record label sponsor you rather than signing yourself away and it’s only a few that collaborate because they know that they don’t gain much from it so in all honesty nothings better than building your own brand/fanbase it’s hard as hell but definitely worth it
@xxxhellboi305And how he actually bribed ilovemakonen into signing that wasn’t a surprise remix he didn’t even agree to the remix drake did it himself and force bro to sign to him for more publicity in all honesty coming from a fan drake is a snake sad to but in this game it’s a dog eat dog world and to be on top that’s how you stay on top by taking advantage of people who are less fortunate or know little to knowing about how the rap game works . Signing to anyone is selling your soul to them . They own you and anything put out or create .. it’s just how it goes when you in that field
@xxxhellboi305I definitely do think Drake or whoever makes the marketing decisions for the label, is really bad at their job or he doesn’t need to be signing any artists. Dvsn has been making good music for about a decade now and they still are not as popular as they should be. I hate theshaderoom but I’m ngl, they brought more publicity to the group, when they made a post about their song, “If I get caught cheatin”, more than OVO themselves did. The album barely got any promo. How is it possible that they been making music for 10 years now, and they’re still only selling small venues? Idk. It just don’t make any sense to me
@Gold_NimbusForgot to mention a boogie with da hoodie was signed to him too at 1 point
@xxxhellboi305You never miss. Keep doing what you’re doing man.
@cristaichou4162Do one about jay z
@chrisjohnson8228I believe in tradition. I think black artists shouldn't be allowed to sign other artists unless they are part Jewish to honor the music industries history of old Jewish guys ripping off talented black youth. So basically Lenny Kravitz should rule black music with an iron dome....err fist.
@EnwordioNiggaretti2:10 😂😂😂 bro
@MashirooYT1:15 that's PND Blacky 😂😂
@DiosluxThey said the same thing about Eminem and shady records. They said the same thing about Wayne and Young money. Will the easiest way to break it down is this:
Being the best employee does it make you the best manager and being the best manager doesn't mean you'd be the best CEO
Its not a curse bc when he signed those artists, they never got to work and used excuses for their laziness, PND is the only one that got to work and benefited from bc obviously as you see him and Drake made a album together and now he's on tour. And his last solo album did good, too
@ZyairelitboyI think this is for signing to any major....when is the last time someone has been successful from ANY major? Aftermath, Shady, so on....The smart thing to do is go the way Russ went.
@Senior_CreasyOVO is just a reheated Derrty Entertainment/Murder Inc.
@TimEdward-c7rIt’s really insane how PartyNextDoor didn’t even go big because of Drake but because of Kanye.
It’s why I thought SSS4U was lowkey off coz that kind of album should have happened when PNU was newcomer. Plus the album barely even had a solo song from PNU.
Really wish things worked out better for dvsn, Roy and Majid Jordan
@foluadeniyi2107Drake is a FRAUD. STOP calling him a successful rapper
@lasleroy1Ovo just needs to invest more on artists. Like spend money on features
@MzansireactsnetworkMost record labels, and even more common when the label is ran by a big name artist, will sign musical artists just to shelf their music or use it for their own releases.
@jonviaJust stealing their material (P Diddy ) ain’t no way you signing this many people and this is happening 🤨
@eddied.8361OVO is not the only one. Dr. Dre probably the worst offender.
@jessejaimz_og5978ALL $acrificial stuff on the low, once you know how these Industry gangs get down and verily Dirtily so. Wicked
@bulletproofwaafle7770Ayyy, B.S. I dig that cap, very fashionable and cute.
