The reason Angier kills his double immediately is because they can't both get to witness the audiences reaction to every night. He lives for that and cannot fathom sacrificing that. He'd literally rather die than not get to see their reaction to his great trick.

Tesla’s machine was real. It is shown duplicating objects before Angier uses it, and the ending with the rows of tanks is presented as proof that his final version of the trick relied on actual duplication, not just a hidden double. That is why Angier says he never knew whether he would be “the man in the box or the prestige,” because once the machine created two identical Angiers with the same memories, one continued to take the bow while the other drowned, making the trick a form of repeated self-killing for applause, obsession, and revenge. Amazing film.

Ok so The Prestige is one of Christopher Nolan's strongest movies and it's definitely a film that gets better and better the more that you watch it. It's one of the only films I've seen where I finished watching it and immediately started it up again in order to see how everything was connected. Filled with insane details, amazing foreshadowing and a lot of things you might miss I thought I'd take a trip through the film to discuss everything about it.

are you watching closely

The Borden Brother who is the actual father of the daughter is the one who survived— a happy ending

I’m of the belief that Tesla’s machine actually did transport the original Angier, and the clone appears inside the machine. The first clone killed the original Angier, and ended up unknowingly becoming the prestige every night, while the newly generated clones immediately became the man in the box. But he would never know which one he was

— @ajamusic7322

So the movie centres around the victorian magicians Robert Angier and Alfred Borden...and his twin. We watch as their rivalry escalates further and further and being someone who exists in the highly competitive landscape that is Youtube, I'm ashamed to admit that I've even been pulled into vicous things like this too.

I'm sure lots of people have found rivalries similar to this and the characters in the film have one that develops into an obsession. Unintentionally this leads to the death of their loved ones and them being truly alone in the world.

It’s kind of psychopathic for the two Christian Bales to switch between roles all the time. Can’t one of them just stay full time as Fallon and they can live somewhat normal lives?

— @Erbunion

The deaths of the characters wives actually foreshadown their own and early on they reflect the fate that's in store for each character.

Angiers wife Julia drowns in a box and this is of course mirrored in the death that the versions of him face if they're trapped in the tank.

Strong movie and all, but the actual magic they throw in the end there is weak payoff. People duplicator, my ass.

— @Erbunion

One of the Borden brothers die by hanging and this is set up by his wifes death earlier in the film who hangs herself at the mid point.

The film is very much about duplicates and mirrors with Angier creating copies of himself in order to pull off an impossible magic trick. This is mirrored in the Bordens who are revealed to be twins at the end showing how there was a hidden double in the movie the entire time.

Does no one have a problem that the “prestige” in this movie is that magic is actually real?

British accents are cool. Chicago is a known dump and murder hole. Blue cities have a common theme of having the most social programs, fraud, and violent crime.

The real trick was the copies getting the memories. All-in-all one of my favorite movies, It taught me to pose the first act as questions to the whole movie, it taught me foreshadowing. This movie will forever live in my top 3

The original Angier died regardless. The one on the platform shot the first Angier who appeared; then next time, the Angier on the platform was drowned.
If Angier was teleported, he was killed that first attempt. If he wasn't, he was killed in the water the first time he preformed the trick.

He may have believed that the original Angier teleported, meaning he knew he was a clone and thought he'd survive each show.
Or he's punishing himself, forcing him to experience what his wife had to go through

@RebeccaWatson-b5g

I just saw someone in reddit mention how if you pay attention to Angiers final blind stage hand crew. They are clones. So Angier just duplicated his workforce. And than I also saw someone say he could duplicate anything including money. Even though he was born rich. He probably duplocatrd money cuz he is hella rich by the end

@g_dub

Borden makes the sacrifices that Angier couldn’t. In the end he is rewarded for this and Angier is punished for it. One of my all time faves

6:05 Nolan is actually well known for using the movie title as a line in the film itself. Check out his Batman trilogy

Nolan is one of greatest film makers of today!

This movie is beautifully filmed and brilliantly acted, in true Nolan fashion, however for me, and I know mi probably in the minority, but for me the twist was really silly, it was kind of like hey I have a twin brother, and hey amazingly no one knew about it or ever saw us together our whole lives.

They lived in hiding, even before they come up with the conception of this new trick, it didn't land for me at all,.

The same with the electric duplicating machine, which is another aspect I just didn't get on with, the film is quite grounded to then introduce this machine that makes copies of anything, it felt needed for the whole plot point to work, which I guess it was.

In the Prestige I bet Bale did the same thing but didn’t kill the guy that came out. That’s why they show him already at Tesla’s show when Jackman first seen him.

Is Borden a twin or a clone? - I just can’t buy that he’d send Angiers on a goose chase and Tesla happened to invent cloning - it’s the head on coincidence head scratcher that divides me...

That’s the only thing I’ve never been certain within the plot. Borden used it once and destroyed - he’s the better magician. But Angiers was a dumb fuck who didn’t get the trick or understand the prestige. Instead he’s just clone, kill, clone, kill…

Otherwise - masterpiece. Top 3 Nolan. It’s showing you everything and telling you nothing. 10/10

I found myself routing for Huge since Bale killed his wife in the start. I found the ending dissatisfying that they gave Bale the win. Hugh became obsessed as you would seeking revenge. Enjoyed the film but left me disappointed

To be fair they were in Chicago. Those rats don't know anything at all lol a city of literal imbeciles with a life expectancy of 20 years

@jakielou1884

GIANT writing mistake: If you assume that Lord Caldrow/R. Angier was the one translating Borden's diary, then why was he suprised to read the last pages where it ends at the turn (instead of the prestige)..?
Wouldn't he have inadvertently read those pages right when he was translating them with the cypher?
