For the wicker witch lives story, here's my theory based on the wording of the story and what the animation implies.

Clovis the she devil and Candace were lovers. They did possess super natural powers. Candace did not want to say who Clovis was during the trial bc she knew that the court would also simply execute Clovis as well for also being a witch. I think Candace and Clovis both seemed calm bc they knew they had a plan. Candace would except her sentence without outing Clovis to keep her safe and bc she needed Clovis to bring her back afterwards.

Once Candace died, Clovis preformed a ritual or spell that involved the bones of her dead lover, the nails and wicker. Then, to complete the ritual, she want to the husbands house, lit the body of Candace on fire again so that she could throw the body on the husband so that he would actually end up taking Candace's place. Once the ritual was complete, Candace was indeed given "new life" and walked out of the home, free to be with Clovis bc everyone thought her dead anyway.

Meanwhile, the other part of the ritual was to curse her husband to be lit aflame for all eternity, over and over again and for the cherry on top, for any abuser newby to meet the same end. A sort of cosmic justice enacted. A penance for the suffering of Candace and all the others like her.
