The secret to pure iron striking? Don't look at your golf ball!
Video Overview & Insights
Do you want to strike your irons pure? The secret is to not look at your golf ball when you strike your irons. In this video Tom explains how to do this!
I like your simple techinque.
I have used that technique occasionally in the past and it worked. Again we get back to old habits, forget the tip and hit behind. I am going to follow this rule consistently. You didnt say how far we should look ahead. I am guessing may be 4 inches or so ahead.

for me, i look about 2golfball widths (or 1 iron clubhead turned horizontally) ahead of the ball, i try to look at & swing down & into that gap (wedges, irons, hybrids & 5wood) & not lifting my head until my trail shoulder hits my chin.
For my driver/3wood i stare at the trail edge of the clubhead and swing thru that (making sure my trail shoulder hits my chinas well) by doing so it keeps my head BEHIND the ball

I did something very similar by using two balls

When you watch slow motion of pro swings, they always hit the ball first and then the grass. Amazing.

This makes a lot of sense. I’m gonna take it to the range tomorrow!

Here all along I was trying to BE the ball.

Sounds like you're lucky enough to play on private courses. Most public courses I play have hardpan fairways where taking a divot is difficult.

What?
@mls2793The solution to this? Nicklaus taught it to me 52 years ago: move your head first! That is, you head cannot help but rotate a bit as you rotate around your spine in the backswing. So if you rotate your head slightly prior to initiating arm/body movement, you’re already locked in to your head position. You can then look a few inches past the ball as described here in this vid.
For me, the sequence after address is: 1. Press lead wrist forward. 2. Cock head back as just described. 3. Begin shoulder rotation. Etc.
When you have nothing new or revolutionary to say, but you have to make a video
@cebozHow about a demo shot to show us?
@rizek-q4iThat was totally unclear even as an ex single figure player.
@BrianCarter-k8gI started doing this a few months ago. Lowered my handy cap from 13 to 10 in just a few months. Took a little getting used to but now it’s habit. Works for me.
@sparkymac3320So This one video has caught my attention..
I have golfed for 50 years. Had a 9 HC two years ago but it’s slipped to 12.5 because of the development in my swing that’s causing Shanks. Videos to me don’t really catch what’s wrong but I have always hit very high irons and little mid iron divots but some with scoring wedges. I have tried lots of others shanking thoughts but nothing has had permanent help. When I am in a position where the ball is even a little below me I am in danger zone. I am 6’..I try to hit off toe but I also seem to concentrate on the right side of ball trying to hit the center. On the range I can have a little more control when hitting %80 and less back swing.
I am thinking I will try your tip and hope for better contact if not concentrating on ball as mentioned and going more for the low part of the swing on follow thru… wish me luck and I hope no one out there ever gets the Shanks as they are tough shots to deal with!
How far ahead should I be looking? Based on this video, it looks like I should be aiming at the tee which appears to be about 10cm in front of the ball.
@markhoch67is it legal to put a ball marker 5" in front of ball? on iron shots
@michaelgreene5703Gray player advocates looking at the back of the ball Jack Nicalos says what works for you use it
@DouglasLindsay6GrayThis is bad for ma and anyone like me who also has too much lag and too much club shaft forward lean. Good for anyone who is compromised by the optical illusion called parallax
@mwolseley1Just another fad that changes every few months or so. And you will get 5 to 10 "instructors" saying it at the same time to add "legitimacy". Just like a certain amount of swaying and/or sliding are "good".
@nick748It is interesting that there is a YouTube video of Tiger Woods talking to Scottie Scheffler, where after Tiger hits a ball with what looks like a medium iron Scottie asks him, "Where's the divot." Tiger responds by saying he doesn't like to take a divot. That he learned to play that way, and prefers it. There are videos of Tiger taking divots in competition with short irons and wedges, but the person many consider the best golfer ever at least some of the time takes shots without taking divots. If you can pick the ball cleanly, you may not deloft the club as much as if you were to take a divot, but you can still hit a good shot.
@sushibar777I have been playing golf for 25 years and always get stuck behind the ball and flip my club like he is describing. It's so frustrating and I cant wait to try this.

Hi Tom. i live in the caribbeans and unforunately the rairways mostly miss grass. Then my underground is solid ground,
By then I have problem to get a good chip and am not able to lift the ball good in the air.
Can you show how to chip stating off a solid ground?
Greetz, David
I went golfing and tried this and it works so well! Thanks!
@MrTucan49DEMONSTRAT IT!
@richardwhiteside3234I began doing too. I have long drives, but my irons were inconsistent. Handicap going down.
@idapharr4345I was taught to look behind the ball.
@johndoyle5001My ground contact is pretty good but I fight hitting it off the toe. Will this help with that?
@quentinray851This guy is nuts. Head still until after impact
@maxxbenzz7842Never seen them anyway, my big bulky ballsack in the way
@CatGPT_When hitting the driver where should i look hitting the ball. Should it be 3 to 4 inches in front of the ball?
@stuartrubenstein6624I can’t see the ball anyway! There is a round object protruded out from gravity!
@jamesgranger8410try playing with one eye.i have to look at the ball with my one eye otherwise i will not see it .
@johnvanegmondTried it didn’t work. I take my eye off of ball I play bad golf. Same as cricket, rugby, soccer, tennis, snooker etc..
@jaymewill6742never once hits the ball. lol
@jonalvord7006maybe the dumbest advice ever
@froodogga7053I agree with this 100% Never look at the ball.
@calendarmylifeAbout 25 years ago I was fortunate enough to have a lesson from an ex Ryder Club player.
His advice was to cock by head slightly to the right and then look at the back of ball with both eyes. My swing improved for at least three days after the lesson.
25 years later i find out where I’ve been going wrong…
When you make the ball your target all your energy stops at the ball instead of swinging through
@RunningSoCalI don’t have friends on the golf course. I call them pigeons!! If they mention you I plan to tell them “I tried that!! If I didn’t top the ball I shanked it!” Sorry!!
@j.mccarthy3008I call BS on this recommendation!
@BillCunningham-c7hdon't move your head.
@davidfoster6820How does this work for a right handed player that holds the club with left hand down as I do ( I played Hurling when I was young ) and have done for all mt golfing life.. too old now to change..
@tasha0144Once I started focusing just ahead of the ball, my shots got way better. Glad to see this video back it up.
@CrazyWoods-d1mSo true. Sometimes when I’m really struggling, I’ll actually swing with my eyes closed and those shots are generally way more consistent then when my eyes are open. Crazy how that works.
@James-xg5rhWow....I always place my ball at the lowest pt of my swing. I guess I need to have it back a few inches...
@80guitarguy82Its difficult and impossible not to see the ball
I try hit the front of the ball
I thought I got lessen from Arnold Schwarzenegger.
@andrew-s1z5fI watched this a couple of days ago and, without practice, tried it while playing in a competition today. I have never the ball as nicely as I did today. Fairway woods, Hybrids and Irons. Amazing stuff. If it wasn't for my wayward putting, I'd have won!
