In this video, I show you a simple songwriting formula that will help you have a clear plan for finishing your songs every time.

The problem isn’t writing for me. It’s knowing whether or not it’s good. Something that seems good to me or others who have no experience might not be to everyone else

ABOUT KEPPIE

The hook in my opinion was picking my favorite artist Ed Sheeran

— @abraham-blissk

Hi I'm Keppie! I'm a professional songwriter, and songwriting teacher. I've been teaching song and lyric writing for over 10 years now for some of the best contemporary music colleges in the world— Berklee Online, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music's Open Academy, as well as for the Australian College of the Arts. At other times, I've taught for the Australian Institute of Music, as well as the LA School of Songwriting.

My goal is to help people write better songs! My experience in the classroom, with thousands of students at this point (many going on to find careers and success in music), is that your songwriting, like all things, can get better with meaningful, deliberate practice. My intention is to share the skills, knowledge, information, and ideas that I've gathered with anyone who wants to improve their songwriting.

Great stuff! Excellent

after watching this i thought i had it fuigured out so i went to finish my song but even though i had everything i still didnt know what to write so i used a method i like to call the 'step on the gas and take your foot off the breaks' method and people get into writers block cuz of anxiety and other emotional stuff so if you dont care at all and dont care about how good it sounds cuz of that extra confidence it will help you write more and better lyrics

Greetings,

Thank you for the video. For up-and-coming songwriters, this site can potentially do a lot of good. Equally, a lot of bad, which is the unfortunate case here. You mean well, and kudos to that. But Jimmy Webb’s method has faced well-placed scrutiny for, among other viable complaints, overstuffing the family sow, as we say back home in the Appalachian Mountains.

Beyond that, even Webb has confessed to a particular flaw in his method: the unsingable line he often crafts. Repetitive rhyming structure offers dissonance rather than depth to his verbose prose as well.

Again, you mean well, but Webb, especially when suggested as an industry leader within the craft, is a mark he, nor his method, can achieve in its current form. Equally, where the industry-standard time limit has shrunk to under three minutes of playtime per song (2:45) to retain listeners, his method is made doubly, or triply (as is the case here), irrelevant.

You mean well, but the example is ill-placed. Back home, we call this a male stripper in a nunnery — good intention, egregiously bad placement. Hope that this helps. Even if the nuns love a well-hung cross, keep the habit, but change the messenger when preaching the gospel. Right then--

Talk soon…

Nothing?! Well-hung cross is comedic gold you can wear around your neck. Pearls before swine indeed! We’ll flesh this one out another time.

____

“Back home, we say that ‘pearls before swine’ takes on a whole other connotation when a male stripper says it in a nunnery.” — Bo Jack

This video has also given me the idea of writing a song about how sick I am of YouTubers. How much normie slop there is on YouTube. How tiresome all the gurus and influencers are.

Is your 7 day, 2026 song writers challenge appropriate for an absolute beginner our would it drag down the common community narrative to an unnecessarily low level? Thanks Kelpie

This is really well organized. Thank-you for this. I was wondering if you have a simple like order as far as bridges? Like the order of a song? I'm Autistic and ADHD and so my mind is having a hard time focusing. I like the song maps and how you explained it. I'm still stuck on like verse one verse two bridge etc.? Just a beginner:)

Don't forget a good memorable chorus. Give people an earworm they can sing and you are on your way to hit . "Wooly bully wooly bully" now that you read that you are probably singing it in your head...

👍Thank you for these excellent songwriting tips. However, since this is all about songwriting, I think it’s important to note the songwriters of “The House that Built Me” were Tom Douglas, and Allen Shamblin (not M. Lambert)

A question to songwriters out there. Do you record and keep every song you wrote, including multiple versions? Or do you just keep the best ones or ones that you feel you like or might use further down the line?

From the deep Of my heart . Thank You very much. 😊😊😊

The Beatles would never compose a song this way. They really didn't think much , they were just experimenting and trying a lot of stuff from their knowledge, from which they knew that it sounds good and could fit to the song. No song mapping and other theoretical thinking.

I have no experience writing songs other than chip tune and instrumentals for games, but I feel like alot of these comments saying to write music "from the heart" instead of using a formula are a bit silly. I don't think the goal of this video is to tell you exactly how you have to write songs for the rest of your life, but rather to give you a framework to get people to start actually writing songs. Obviously once you're comfortable with song writing, it will come alot more naturally (and surely you'd just develop your own formula subconsciously anyway).

@pinkdodge

On most of this stuff they say, this is not the only way to write and these techniques will help if you are struggling to craft your original ideas into songs... And they do.
