The Steam Machine Benchmark Nobody Expected…

I think it's exactly what is expected. Synthetic benchmark can be unreliable on these cases, games have similar performance. At these specs (64gb RAM wtf?) Windows can run all spyware on the background and you don't even notice anymore. But compare a 4th gen i7 with a 1070 (my older rig) it's night and day on Windows vs Linux. Steam Deck, that is slightly less CPU powerful than my older rig, and painfully less gpu capable showed palpable improvements when I installed Linux on it. My new gaming rig, that is on the latest AMD cpu and gpu I had zero performance gains by running Linux. Valve is great but they are a small team mostly putting together and tweaking already existing drivers from Arch, they can't do magic.

you cant compare the 2 the game was designed to run on windows.
for the game to run on Linux it has to go through a translate.
do the test again with a game that is native on Linux.
the fact that its only a 1 FPS difference going through a translate is a massive step in the right direction because we all know emulating games gives bad performance.

I'm playing on the Steam Machine myself at this moment and put my main Desktop computer to the side. One thing that I noticed is that for some reason V-Sync off gives me a very smooth experience, while on the desktop pc I always had horrible tearing and it is very visible on my 43" monitor so I was mostly forced to use V-Sync. The Steam Machine is very silent for a small PC, because I had to crank up all the fans on my Desktop to max so it wouldn't crash with this hot summer. I'm also testing if I can live without Windows, because I don't like the route Windows is taking by pushing notifications and ads. If everything works like external hardware if I can do everything that I did before with software, I will install Steam OS on my main Desktop as well. I do use the Steam Machine in Desktop mode at this moment and it is a nice experience. It may not be the fastest hardware out there, but the AAA games that require better hardware (like RTX) are all filled with cash shops, DLC and so on that aren't real games anymore, because you should normally be able to unlock the coolest looking items by playing the game, and not by swiping your credit card. I rather play a well optimized game with a good story, or an multiplayer/online games where you unlock items by putting effort in.

I only trust my own benchmarks and how make 64GB sense? It also depends.on the game, some run fast on Linux other on Windows. Anyway I’ll never switch back. SteamOS Rulez. 💪

Honestly whining about 1% performance loss is crazy considering these are windows native games running on a non windows system.

So no real support by other store fronts(so not open in any meaningful way), Alan wake was only on epic etc, no gamepass, no kernel level anticheat, you could build someting much better for the same price, & steamOS doesn't offer any better performance. Why would anyone get this?

Just bought a legion go 2 extreme. Pricy but worth it imo. Was on the fence about steamos vs windows but stuck with windows because it came with it and I gotta admit, besides the initial updates when first booting it up I find it to be pretty awesome considering the fact you can play any game unlike steamos play Steam games only. I know there’s other ways around it to play whatever but I’m not a huge tech guy so I’m happy with what I have. I’m an old-school gamer so the fact that they had theme park for PS1 on GOG, yeah that was enough for me to stick with windows for now 😂

Since when is it the norm that windows games are only 1% faster on Linux than on windows ? 😂 what’s the point of mentioning that? :D aside from that the frame pacing and frametimes are extremely good with steam os because of Gamescope, I use cachyOS with a dedicated Gamescope Session on my gaming pc and it’s absolutely perfect 👌

Why people bothering benchmarks, we already knew performance. They states it's to beat 50% lower end of the active steam user base. That means everyone with 3060 or 6600xt , are equivalent or slightly better.

You mean the Stea Machine with 64gb of ram?

Time after time test have show when it's not done by a steam fan boy that window is 10-30% better in FPS..switch on RT and it's the higher 30% but on average window is 10% better in game

It is a compatibility layer. It is not native. It is never going to provide a substantial performance uplift no matter how much Valve fanboys (I am one of them) believe it will. Performance is physics. Physics do not care what operating system you are running.

Games are running on SM through a compatibility layer, so there is gonna be some overhead, we knew that already. Also if you wanna play Fornite and AC stuff, not gonna happen soon, we also knew that already, just like on SD. On SteamOS we get optimizations and ease of use as much as possible, while on Windows we get a whole lot of crap as much as possible, so what's the news here? Pick your poison...or health potion, whatever.

I like my Steam Machine because its NOT Windows. Linux has never been the performance leader in gaming, Windows always squeaks out a win. for AMD hardware, Windows only averaging 1% faster is amazingly good. Who told you Linux runs anything faster, it doesn't. People aren't going to Linux for Windows game performance.

It's not even about FPS. It's about getting Microslop out of your life. That's the upgrade.
