The Temperaments: Phlegmatic

Video Overview & Insights

Last but not least, we turn our attention to the Peaceful Phlegmatics in the final episode of our 5-part series on the temperaments. Often considered stoic, we share how these peace-makers, according to some scholars, can often have some of the greatest difficulty in becoming saints.

I am phlegmatic melancholic. I wonder if you get less phlegmatic clients because of their independence & self reliance rather than laziness. I have a growth mindset & am always trying to learn & grow but tend to steer away from group coaching type things. I was doing group Bible studies for several years in an evangelical church before reverting to Catholicism. Now I meet with a priest for individual spiritual direction.

But when they do become saints, they are very powerful. Listen in and learn about the incredible gifts that the phlegmatic temperament brings to the Kingdom.

I disagree that it's harder for phlegmatics to become saints anymore the the other temperaments.I think it is hard for every temperament to become saints. I think the phlegmatics are the hidden saints. They prefer to work behind the scenes so they are not necessarily seen by the world. Thus putting the humblness and meekness to work.

Need to be kind of words to help others grow, not to bash them despite their personalities
 like yours
You reminded me what I thought was Jesus struggled on His 33 yrs on Earth, having 12 disciples each one with a special personality. I see John as a Phlegmatic, all love and the skills of a Empath allowing to be a vessel for Heavenly expression of the Gift of Grace Holy Spirit. I would love to visit with St John on his very first years in the Ministry
. Who was him and whom he turn out to be later in Glory and Humble servitude
You, who would you be? My biggest conflict in the Church, we were call each other Brothers in God, but how can you be brothers with someone who “doesn’t like you”, bluntly admits it. Little Brother, in peace I leave you, but hey like so it was written “God is love” ( NO matter how the Holy Church says- you I love, but you tolerate” . Little brother, Love everyone with their flaws and their gift, as for much it was given to you and forgiven so you must love others, and forgive others despite of their flaws. Tsk tsk tsk Gossip is a sin. But be of courage, as it is written I hope in the Catholic Bible also Romans 5:20,
“For wherever sin exists in abundance and is multiplying and constantly expanding, that is precisely the time and place where grace is poured out in a far greater, surpassing quantity.” So quit it, and grow in pece.

What Matt said about people with phlegmatic dominant temperament being the hardest to become saints surely rings a bell to me with a Revelations passage (Rev 3: 15-16), about being neither cold nor hot, being lukewarm, it is surely one of our hardest flaws to overcome; our lust for comfort and tranquility, avoiding responsibility or hardship, speaking out when needed, even in if it involves conflict. May God helps us to overcome comfort in pursue of His Kingdom.

I'm phlegmatic and I have a poor relationship with God ... If I find Him I will probably fight him !

Loved this episode. Meekness is power or strength restrained or controlled. Jesus had the power to wipe out Pilate and Herod but chose gentleness. Meekness deals more with how we treat others. Humility is an interior disposition dealing with self.

Just want to share, from a through and through phlegmatic. The most impactful phlegmatic saint is St Thomas Aquinas.. I know this because I’ve spent a great deal of time researching my disposition and how to use it to become more virtuous. St Thomas Aquinas is one of the saints I’ve always admired most and studied, so to find out he was also a phlegmatic really gave me consolation.. like a wise phlegmatic would probably say: “phlegmatics not always become saints, but if they do, they’re Thomas Aquinas” 😼‍💹 big shoes to fill!
