England's American colonies resulted from her utter failure to compete with Holland over the Spice Islands. Economically and militarily she was no match for the Dutch during most of the 17th century so turned attention elsewhere...America. So eager were the Dutch to have a complete monopoly over the lucrative spice trade, that she compelled England to give up her claim to the tiny island of Run, a mere five square miles and so small it doesn't appear on most maps, but festooned with nutmeg. As compensation Run was exchanged for Nieuw Amsterdam renamed, of course to New York.
The largely forgotten story of England's forlorn attempts to compete with the mighty Dutch VOC in the East Indies and how Run was exchanged for Manhattan is told by Giles Milton in his book 'Nathaniel's Nutmeg'. The tale is one of human endeavour and courage but mostly entails insatiable greed and great cruelty. It's not a happy reflection of humanity.

@NoaLorenzoLepicardThis is fabulous. Can you please change the African slaves to a drawing of the continent of Africa and chains? I’d love to be able to use this in my classroom but that image popping up several times is no good for the kids with that heritage and often gets the other kids laughing. Thanks!
