Luke Tomes travels to the world's first racing track at Brooklands Museum in Weybridge to find out what it took to be a grand prix racing driver over the last century. Donning a traditional racing suit, hat and goggles, Luke drives a Bugatti Baby, based on the 1926 Type 37 Bugatti race car, down the Brooklands finishing straight, the same track used in the first ever British Grand Prix.

Luke is also driven in a replica of the Lagonda driven at the 1935 Le Mans 24-hour race by Dr Dudley Benjafield, before taking on the Lewis Hamilton McLaren simulator to see if he can cut it as a Formula 1 driver in the 21st century.
2026 marks the centenary of the first British Grand Prix which took place at Brooklands in 1926, and the museum will be having lots of celebrations throughout the year â keep an eye out for upcoming announcements on the Brooklands Museum website soon!

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was the second track to be purpose-built for racing; unlike Brooklands it was made with a road surface made from brick. Hence the nickname it has always carried: "The Brickyard." Even today there is a three foot section of brick, at the start-finish line.

That's crazy that going 66mph for 24 hours was a record in the early days. I mean it makes sense. But here in the US i uses to live in Dyer, IN and drove to my sister's house in Panorama Village, TX in about 15.5 hours. It's about 1,040 miles. So averaging about 67 mph. While a long drive it wasn't that bad. But i know to Europeans, that's a haul. Haha

35:07 I'm from Argentina, I know Juan Manuel Fangio house in Balcarce, his workshop where he began to prepare his cars, there is a museum in his city with many Formula 1 cars from all eras donated by different entities and drivers like Ayrton Senna who admired Fangio a lot.

@andreleibbrandt7532Disappointed that the video is called "history of Formula 1" but only mentions the first F1 race about 25 minutes in... yes I get it, interesting to go through the history of car racing but in that case call it "history of motor racing". Feels clickbaity not gonna lie. Not even a mention of Michael Schumacher in a video called "history of Formula 1"...!

That's modern F1. Cars are too big, they can't go for the gap. The lead car takes almost the whole damn track lol. It's all about who can engineer the car to have the best qualifying lap so they can do 60 parade laps.
Screw that âenvironmentalâ nonsense, electric motors are far worse for the environment then fossil fuels. Move next to a nickel mine and find out. You donât care because you donât know the truth, you only know the lies they sell you.
No we havenât reached a limit. If they let the engineers do whatever they wanted the drivers wouldnât be able to handle the carâs performance.

Actually, he can't. Driver's seats are ballasted up to... 80kg? (82kg for 2026)? Regardless, all drivers weigh roughly the same with their seats included.
Given how the words "Fangio" and "Ayrton" were pronounced, I can only assume that the first time that the host ever heard of such words was during the voice-over session.

@BM-lb3xsWaste of time and money. You'd be under impression that the British invented car racing. The document ignores the pre-WWII Grand Prix racing which was dominated by German brands and is an actual progenitor of post-war F1.
