The Tour de France Explained | Everything You Need To Know About The Biggest Bike Race In The World
Video Overview & Insights
The Tour de France is, quite simply, the biggest bike race in the world. Spread across 3 weeks every summer, Le Tour sees the fastest professional cyclists in the world race around France in a bid to take home the most iconic prize in cycling: the Yellow Jersey. With a different winner every day, and 4 different leaders jerseys changing hands throughout the race, it can be confusing to know what’s going on. So sit back, relax, and enjoy our beginners guide to the Tour de France. Whether you’re new to watching bike racing, or just need a bit of a refresher, this is the video for you!

I'm here after watching six episodes of TDF on Netflix. It's interesting, but now maybe I'll actually be able to follow it, and the race next time it's on. This is definitely the most convoluted sport I've watched. You did a great job breaking it down without taking my whole morning.

I remember watching this video back in the pandemic, and now in 2025 there is Le Tour Femmes, which I think is something to be cheerful about. Here's for even better things to come in the future of cycling.

I didn’t know this growing up but the Tour was the way I would bond with my grandfather. He was an avid cyclist and would never miss a TdF race. He sparked my love for cycling and I would sit there and watch with him. I had no idea what was going on, but that didn’t matter. I just loved seeing him enjoy his time. He’s 81 now still rides. Not nearly as much or as far, but he’s still at it. Watching the Tour always reminds me of him.

The idea that women should get their own Tour de France in the name of "equality" is absurd. Men can barely handle it, stop pretending women would be able to do it. It's ridiculous.

Terribly explained. Too much information too quickly, and priority of importance of elements of the race completely absent. Try again.

Thank you for explaining the team dynamic so well. I have started watching it this year and I was confused at how it feels like an individual event, yet there are teams. And even with the individual element, the team work is so good. I wondered what the team got out of it.

I happily shared this video.
@myoneblackfriend3151Love that you included a nod to the women's LA TDF at the end. Thanks
@amberventris3306Wait until East Africans are rich enough to support their kids to ride bikes…….I think they will wipe out all the white riders
@thejeffinvade“Since 1975, the last stage has finished on the iconic Champs-Élysées in Paris…”
Well… 2024 will be a touch different this year… Seeing as how Paris is prepping to host the summer Olympics this year, the tour organizers decided to kibosh the traditional Paris finish this year and move the last stage to Nice!
Thank this is very helpful 👍
@seansmith4150I’m not bald please stop saying that
@JackThomas-t4mI’ve been watching/casually watching the Tour back when it was on Outdoor Life Network/Versus with Lance riding. And this was the first time I actually took the time to learn the intricacies and what the other jerseys besides the yellow were for. Thanks!
@eddiebellamy7605Something tells me the race was nowhere near this complicated when it first started out in 1903.
@I_Am_Become_LightKlammers are DANISHES TEAM?

Be our hustle @brussels.
@NicholasVincent-ol1zkWho's here from Netflix tour de France unchained 😂
@adude888The organization got good money but gives just these small amounts to the riders. That is not fair. 25k euro, is it joke?
@Emre_ulyssesWout van Aart is a sprinter climber
@felixturnerdufour3879why do they have price money at all if it barely covers the cost of the equipment 🤣
@vegan.3176I really think you are right about a woman's "Pro tour..." would be great! I know just as many women that really enjoy cycling just as much as men. I am a trail rider for fun and the women that mountain bike with us are by far stronger than most of the men in the group and the endurance is real. Really is a shame there isn't a woman's class in these events or comparable to the men's. Thanks for the video.
@williamcook2499So do guys trade around the yellow jersey? Does each team have their own just in case? Does anyone who held it for a day get to keep it?
@atticusshadowmore32635 stage types? Flat, mountain, TT, team TT and ?????? What did I miss?
@ciberbri59You should have opened with how to dope to win. Sorry, but this sport has forever been tainted. Feels like most pro cyclers are either caught doping or about to be.
@ChristopherDWThis video aged really well.
@LachiellocoThis is only confusing for people, thag only watch soccer....
@theodorkrause2580Thanks for helping to explain it better so it will be more fun to watch.
