The way we think about charity is dead wrong | Dan Pallotta

Video Overview & Insights

Activist and fundraiser Dan Pallotta calls out the double standard that drives our broken relationship to charities. Too many nonprofits, he says, are rewarded for how little they spend -- not for what they get done. Instead of equating frugality with morality, he asks us to start rewarding charities for their big goals and big accomplishments (even if that comes with big expenses). In this bold talk, he says: Let's change the way we think about changing the world.

I believe that if salaries are to be taken from non-profits, then those salaries should not exceed the average middle-class yearly salary. Therefore, they can survive but they don't need to live like a rock star. If I saw a non-profit employee paying themselves ~$120,000 a year or more, then I would say that is pushing the boundary-line of the tells of a potentially corrupted system. There will be special circumstances.. say that you need a nice enough suit or dress for some kind of event where individuals of higher status will be attending, then that expense could be allowed. That's where my focus is aimed. See it's that salary aspect that is my biggest focus in regards to overheard optics for a non-profit. Other than that, a very nice idealistically focused talk and it helps me to understand the way that most people perceive creating solutions to large-scale problems across society or civilization.

i do however see a problem with a nonprofit CEO salary being over $400k when their cause isn't succeeding

So well put, it's eye opening. Challenging without being hurtful, and realistic. I was looking for ways to choose charities to donate to, and i really needed to be told that.

From what he explained, i think a non-profit organization that managed to fundraise this way successfully, would be The Ocean Cleanup with the Sky collab. Its sponsor, TGC, is the company that made and regularly updates Sky COTL, a free online game with in-app purchases, and it has recurring events where limited time items are available. Since 2021, they included Days of Nature, an event that lasts a few weeks, and around half of the event specific items purchased goes to The Ocean Cleanup project.
From 2021 to 2024, they reported raising 2.5 million dollars. Although nowhere near his company's fundraising, it still shows just how much allowing charities to cross into the for-profit market helps raise funds for the cause.

Notice he didnt laugh when he said they wouldn't want us to keep our overhead low! I know the people in the building are coping like the rest of us. But still that says something about us as a society

I agree with 95%. Social Impact orgs shouldn't need to return investment profits to anyone.

Charities can actually have as bad of circular bureacracy as the government while having less of a percent of GDP as the government as he said, but may be undercounting the non-profits that the government juices up possibly at all so think about it: such a tiny microfaction of GDP actually goes to direct services unless you REALLY know a good startup charity you can trust to avoid donating to bureacracy creep!

Of course it's all wrong no charities for no one and nothing until we get results

Wow! There's a lot to think and talk about here. I feel like the future of the nonprofit sector is going to be in becoming (at least partially) self-sustaining.

Just think, We live in a world where ALL the, EVERY online IQ TEST Wants Bank card details at the end to provide you with your IQ results. All these so called charities, all these Organisations and Companies blowing money “AKA TAX DEDUCTIBLE WRITE OFFS” Don’t Fund any online IQ tests to find the So Called Brightest to Recruit them to Solve Problems. No Eco, No Cancer Research and So On… NONE of these Charities have their own FREE ONLINE IQ TEST Web Page . After all its just a Test, its just simply Web Code. Its a few HTML / PHP Pages where they could HOST IT and identify the Brains that could solve problems… SO WHY Don’t Charity / Research Sites have a Free Online IQ test ?

Answer , Because a Solution ENDS the need for funding aka Tax Deductible Write Offs … 😒

For me it's not that people make money heading up charities. The top people of many charities, who are already well off, sit in an office, safe, making 500,000- millions rarely going into the field to directly get involved see things firsthand or put themselves at risk while the bottom sometimes break their backs risk injuries and often put their very lives at risk working hard labor in dangerous places as volunteers for free.
Plus the "nonprofit" sector does make people rich.

I completely disagree.
World hunger can not be solved by increasing marketing costs.
It’s the global systems that need to change.

@kateburrell3428
@

Dan Pallotta is talking often here about hunger and non profits addressing hunger and poverty.
Has Mr Pallotta heard of OXFAM?
Low overheads on fundraising because of corporate partnerships.
World Vision have massive overheads yet I’ve seen through my humanitarian work how unsustainable a lot of their expensive projects are.
I’d like him to comment on this.

@kateburrell3428

This talk is truly eye-opening. Dan Pallotta challenges so many assumptions about charity and gives a fresh perspective that’s long overdue. Everyone in the nonprofit world should watch this.

Homelessness is still a problem because it's too profitable for them.

Solve the problem, the profit of "fighting homelessness" is gone.

Its why all the initiatives in California cost billions yet see no results.

This is MASSIVE! Sorry I didn't see this 12 years ago, but SO glad I am seeing it now, and am sharing with family and friends. Mind blowing! Guilty as charged - evaluating charities purely on a pie chart and what percentage is spent on overhead, instead of looking at how big the pie is. Sadly, there were/are scams or less honorable fund raising third party intermediaries whose greed motivated donors to judge charities based on overhead alone, but now I know how to give a more honest assessment. THANK YOU!!

This doesn't have enough views. George Soros, Bill Gates and others are weaponizing charities exactly on his points 5:10 Corruption is running rampant via charities around the world hence when Trump and Elon cancelled US AID - the millions not in the know are up in arms wondering why. We can all help the world by sharing this.

First 10 minutes was amazing. I agree with most of the ideology. But he really needs to get his facts straight about those that came over on the mayflower. Calvinism just states that God is sovereign, no reformer/puritan/Calvinist says it's bad to make lots of money. We simply say you should be cautious, because the more you have the more areas that you can be tempted/falter/have people hate you. I've read their works. We believe in having Dominion, ruling, building and creating, all for the glory of God. Enjoy the benefits of that labor.

Thanks for the info. I agree marketing can and should be used by all who desire good to be done, and to promote righteous deeds. You get more of what you subsidize and less of what you penalize.

His logic around 4mins in applies to so many other things in life that alot of people have a backwards mindset towards.

Interesting about the Puritans. Almost like carbon offsets, eh?
One would think, logically, commonsense-wise, if their religion, their ideology, was SO anti-money and profit, why did they even make this part of their ethos in the first place, throwing them into self-conflict and self-hatred? We know that humans are prone to duplicity or even triplicity, quadplicity, etc. But there ARE people who didn't make money their god and lived more austere, non-materialistic lives in harmony with themselves, others, and nature. Why did the Puritans not do this? Interesting.
Great talk by Dan. 1000% spot on.

@davidnyro19

Your problem is not with the charity sector - it's with the assumption that social and public health problems should be solved by charities. Start voting in governments that are properly funded to look after the poor, tackle disadvantage and do the medical research that you mentioned. Get your tax system straight and many of these problems can be solved.

11 years later I see the importance costing money to raise money. I dont have a problem with overhead. I have a problem with "why can't we solve anything?" Breast cancer, AIDS, homelessness, poverty. I think the answer comes from the same place; it is not profitable to solve these things. Someone must make money off this.
