i watched your video and learned how to do the A major, and then i went watch marty's beginner cords video but he did the A major without the pinky finger. Which one should i do, should i practice both of them?

21:32 E maj to A major

Maybe a basic question, but the closer I fret to the...fret, the higher the pitch gets because I'm sort of "stretching" the string over the fret. Am I just pressing too hard?

I'm >30 years old and the father of a toddler. I can count on one hand the number of times I've touched a guitar, let alone strummed one, but I bought a secondhand guitar less than a week ago after deciding I wanted to give it a go. This video is SO helpful! It took me a couple of days to even play the E chord decently; I kept muting at least one string every time I adjusted my fingers. It was frustrating. But I kept practicing and all of a sudden, sitting in the dining room in the middle of the night, something just clicked and now playing the E and A chords feels almost natural - and I was struggling with them less than 20 minutes ago! Your teaching style is great for absolute beginners and very encouraging.

I recently retired and decided to follow one of my dreams and finally learn the guitar. I stumbled onto your site and watched this intro and decided to give the course a go. I just picked up a used Strat and am waiting for my mini amp to arrive and will then dive into it. Thank you for making this course available and doing so in a manner that is easy to understand, can be done on my schedule, and won't make me take out a second mortgage.

Learn to play Clapton chords, thumb over top as mentioned, no need to play chords with 6 notes, the piano never does 🙂

Thank you so much, really. I had no idea where to start with guitar, figured I'd go the same route as piano and just start learning songs. This conditioning is already making me feel so much better about playing guitar, I had no idea how I was supposed to make shapes with my fretting hand. The spider exercise and repetitive motions between E and A is really helpful

If you want to play a song with only the two chords here, I recommend the verses from "Doesn't Remind Me" by Audioslave. It's got a really easy strumming pattern and I'm finding it easier to practice more if I'm sort of learning a song.

I have no idea what I’m doing wrong with the part where you put all 4 fingers on the e string and literally can’t get past that, it goes completely mute and it buzzes

@4tr0citie5rblx4
@

15:48 my hand is so small I can’t do that without the top of my palm touching the e string, if I manage to fix that then my pointer is touching the B string instead. I’m trying to tell myself I’m gonna figure it out but I havnt got passed that part in this day for 4 days now.
