Nice work Thomas. I like to refer to this kind of treatment to old furniture as a sympathetic restroration, and or a sympathetic refinish. It's in keeping with the age and patina that took decades and even centuries to develope.

The techniques Tom uses are very important for duplication and repairs but also the insights that guide his decisions on what and how to address issues has helped me avoid spoiling older craftsmanship, I wish I had this knowledge when I was younger.

I’m one minute into the video and after over 40 years of restorations and repairs and I thought I was the only one with an entire ancient dairy barn filled with projects for the future (for all those times when I’m not 3 years backed up with actual clients 🤣 🤣 🤣) well, there’s no fool like and old fool lol

I have seen you using the very thin brown plastic looking tape. I have sworn never to try to use it again. If the tape gets stuck to the roll it is almost impossible to get going again without rips and tares.

Would like to see a part of a video about the different tapes you use.

If this were an honest-to-God period restoration, there would be no power tools or fancy finishes available; just what would be done in about 1830. Once again you've done a wonderful job and amused the original craftspeople with "I wish I could've done that!" lol

I saw you bring this in…many would say, “why bother?!” You saw worth, and began the painstaking work to bring it back to useful life. In this Christmas Season it brought to my mind, “How like our Lord. Taking on the surface an unredeemable, but Instead of throwing it away, He patiently redeems, and restores, making a show piece out of something lost.” “Made in His image” doing this is so evident here. 🌟MERRY CHRISTMAS🌟

Tom, great videos. Several years ago I flattened a very warped lid for a blanket chest. I thoroughly saturated the board with water, put two cinder blocks on top and sat it in the sun for a day. Once it flattened I installed two battens on the underside. It worked well. Worth a try. Mike

Watching from Australia, as I am, it seems remarkable the variety of furniture-grade Timbers that you have access to. We have a few such Timbers, mostly Tasmanian, but not many.

Because the underside of the original top was hand-planed, I was so hoping you'd try to flatten it, if only by cutting it apart, jointing, then reassembling it and perhaps planing the top side of the wood. I understand, though, that it may have been beyond repair.

Tom, I don’t really know if this applies. Fifty years ago I refinished a dresser that I was told was cherry? The top was badly warped and I ran out of time as I worked outside and winter was coming. I had unscrewed the top so I just set it back on and stored it in the unheated garage with a lot of heave stuff set on top. It sat there all winter. As I live in southern Alberta were warm chinook winds are frequent the temperature fluctuates from 35 above to 40 below all winter, maybe the fluctuations or the cold or the weight are what did it but by spring the top was flat. Fifty years later it is still great and flat. If I remember correctly I only hand sanded, used some ordinary stain and tung oil.

Hi Thom! You can use Birchwood casey brown or black for iron to make a natural looking finish on your screws and galvanized hinges.
Have you had issues with the taper on the wood screw head split old wood?
