Just blown away with Tommy's playing. Used to PIMA, but after a severe arm injury I dont have much strength or control of my pinky and ring finger...had to relearn only using PIM...but am attempting to force myself back into using my ring finger and anchoring with my pinky.

Honestly its by the grace of God that I can even play at all

All the 'buzzy clanky' sounds are a product of steel stringed guitars.

TE is using a Maton, Australian made guitar, actually made in Melbourne so I guess that accounts for its high price, mostly labour - my 1st guitar was a Maton back in the days when it was considered a cheap guitar - I recall it was built solid like a bulldozer and had a very stiff feeling sound with less upper frequencies - I recently tried a Maton it still has that old time characteristic nature , I don't think it is as good as Martin, Gibson, Taylor, Yamaha, Alvarez, and Takamine.

I would recommend never buying anything from Reverb just want to warn people never has a good experienced alway get ripped of buying unseen instruments without testing first is a bad idea and reverb will not help you in a refund. Overcharges and extracheck upon deliveries overcharges on tariffs.

Tommy’s narrative is very universal to right and left handers alike. Many so called “teachers” only speak, no doubt absent mindedly, as viewed from a right handers point of view. He doesn’t confuse by saying “right hand function and left hand function”. This makes learning by Tommy very satisfying and encouraging. Many thanks Tommy👍👍👍👍

Right ive got the thumb part nailed down to perfection......thats the easy bit, im gonna get this nailed down one day....soon lol

My thumb still wants to live with his fingers lol, been practicing 2 days now probs about 2 hours worth and as soon as I bring the fingers into play, the thumb joints them 😂

TE is the real deal, an amazing player. That said, Travis picking is a solo style. Add a bass player to it and the bassist better understand the assignment. stay the F out of his way.

He talked about anchoring down, verses not... Like there are "rules" for playing.
One of my buddies who is technically and traditionally trained taught me one lesson. If you want to play fingerstyle, lose your pick.
Rules are measurable ways of getting better. Really good music, often break the rules. Really cool guitar playing often is, "how'd they do that..." Follow rules to get technical, break the rules to make music.

Call me crazy, but it would sure help me if he used the same chord shapes every time. Kind of hard to keep up. Not to mention he leaves some key information out. Like if I’m playing open D chord which notes/strings am I playing with my thumb vs fingers.

sometimes you just say "Wtf, how did I do that?? what did I change? idc I got it now, baby WOO!"

I try to anchor. Gives me a better reference point of where i need to be.

I've been fingerpicking for over 50 years, and I've tried to learn it, but I've been using a "rolling pattern" for so long that I can't do Travis picking for more than few seconds before I fall back into a rolling pattern. It sounds fine, but I would like to do the Merle Travis style that Tommy was playing.
