Bali is the island winner over your top 5 in thailand, except for people that want larger places/population chiang mai and bangkok cannot be compared with Bali. Also, koh phangan doesnt really fit as an option for moving long term imo, hua hin would have been a better option to explore.

I prefer Balinese culture compared to Thai culture. But Bali doesn't have great healthcare, you usually need to be flown out for anything complicated, and the roads/traffic isnt the best, but the culture makes up for these inconveniences

lived in koh samui for 9 months. then da nang vietnam. loved samui

Not a fan of Phuket. Infrastructure can’t handle the development, largely Russian $.

Phuket goes way down to place 1000 to the list because of ruzzians.

SEA needs to really get their air quality issues under control, from tiling crops instead of burning them, to having a catalysator manadtory on ICE veichles, to outright banning ICE scooters and giving tax incentives to EV's all will help

All my clients are from the west, so being in the other side of the world is a work nightmare.

Thailand is the gold standards in Asia for tourism and expats long term living. Vietnam is 2nd best and the most serious competitor. Both are in Southeast Asia. Quite close too. Expats have choices.

I have spent quite a while in all 5 places and can’t agree more. You hit the nail on the head! What I learned from traveling is that there is no perfect place. There is always a trade-off but for balance I fully agree that Samui is a very good and balanced place to establish a home base. Samui is not cheap but territorial tax system in Thailand still allows for a comfy lifestyle for a very low price.
