Hello Ms. Udayawar- I was referred to your videos by a good friend of mine in New York where we live recently and loved watching a few over the last several weeks! You have beautifully captured the often visited tourist spots and highlighted their history. As someone who grew up in Mumbai when it was known as Bombay, in the early 1960s and 70s, I feel many of the youtubers and the travel influencers often miss out the Old gems of this city. There is so much more to Mumbai than just the food joints/eateries, Haji Ali, the city’s iconic temples, CST, Marine Drive, Walkeshwar, and Bandra West! If one wants to see the real, soulful rhythm of old Bombay, one has to skip the usual tourist spots and explore these hidden, slow-paced heritage enclaves:
Matharpacady Village (Mazgaon) often Known as Mumbai's "Mini Goa" in our younger days. It is a 300-year-old East Indian Catholic settlement filled with peaceful winding lanes, pastel Portuguese-style bungalows, and red-tiled roofs centered around the Holy Cross Church.
Ranwar Village (Bandra): Tucked away from the chaotic Bandstand promenade, this 400-year-old urban village features 19th-century Portuguese homes, the scent of legacy bakeries, and incredible street art/graffiti along Chapel Road and Veronica Street.
Khotachi Wadi (Girgaon): A quiet, 19th-century historical oasis sitting right under the shadow of modern skyscrapers. It’s famous for its wooden heritage houses, wraparound porches, and narrow courtyards (just a short walk from Charni Road Station).
Dadar Parsi Colony & Matunga: Green, breezy, and effortlessly retro. This neighborhood features stunning Art Deco architecture built around five circular gardens, sitting right next to legendary, century-old Irani cafes and authentic South Indian filter coffee spots. I grew up here before my family relocated to USA in the early 1980s when I was 18 years old!
The Ancient Bazaars (Chor, Null, Bhendi and in and around Mohammad Ali Road): Absolute sensory overload and basically the 8th wonder of the world, if I am allowed to say so! These historic markets are a chaotic, beautiful maze of antiques, vintage finds, multi-cuisines, and centuries of living history.
Bombay (now Mumbai) was known for its cosmopolitan, tolerance and secular living and boasted of almost all ethnic and religious groups one could find around the globe.
Bombay's Jewish communities, especially the Baghdadi Jews and Bene Israeli—played a monumental role in transforming 19th-century Bombay from a collection of fishing villages into India’s financial capital. Led by the legendary Sassoon family, often dubbed the "Rothschilds of the East," Jewish philanthropy and enterprise built some of Mumbai's most iconic maritime, civic, and cultural landmarks including the city's docks, the surreal Indo-Saracenic and Gothic surreal synagogues, Flora Fountain, David Sassoon Library and reading room. The Sassoon family was one of the primary donors for the construction of "The Gateway of India."
Highly recommend checking these out and hoping that you publish a video or a series of videos on the same, if you want to capture the true, unseen heartbeat of the city as I experienced then growing up in this great metropolis!
