Far Cry 3 might’ve been your entry point into the chaos, but where did it all begin? In this video, I’m taking a deep dive into the original Far Cry (2004) — the one that started it all, created by Crytek and published by Ubisoft. From tropical merc shootouts to surprise mutant horror elements, we’re breaking down the gameplay, story, and legacy of this oddball first-person shooter that laid the groundwork for one of gaming’s most iconic franchises.

Was the original Far Cry actually good? Or is it better left buried under the island jungle? Let’s find out.

I love the original 2004 game and Far Cry Instincts that really needs a remaster. The Crytek one is tough but satisfying and I really love the tropical setting and think it's synonymous with Far Cry the name as it was far removed from civilization and normalcy with the inclusion of sci-fi enemies. I wish monsters would return to the franchise and give it fresh life as what Ubisoft originally perceived as not serious with the first game, now the latest is just a parody with having a pet dog that shoots missiles.

I didn't even know about this until I restored an og xbox recently and loaded it with games from my childhood and came across this when talking to claude about instincts. Gonna have a go!

I just remembered Uncharted is just like this 😂 Starts on a boat, goes to island, there are mutants. None of the other Uncharted games are like it too.

I played the ps3 version. If you're more into modern gaming such as iron sighting, I'd recommend the ps3 or xbox 360 version than the original. But man, I have a love and hate relationship with Farcry 1 because of how difficult and annoying it was with those rocket launching trigens and invisible ones. Not only that but the deeper I got into the game it felt like a chore to finish it because of how difficult the game was. I love a challenge but it didn't feel like one, it just felt like an annoying chore. Other than that, the game was pretty awesome for it's time.

Sadly, the fun open world part where you could play with other family and friends, long distance even, a shoot at each other, is gone in versions available for download today. I'd love to find the old server software addition you could play on your old Windows 95/98. It we SO much fun. Nothing like it.

Honestly I don't really agree with the point about the gameplay transition between humans and trigents feeling jarring. I do agree that the game gets harder but the player character does get stronger with access to better weapons like the OCIW, which tears through trigents. I also feel like there are cool gameplay differences between the two that make the contrast of the two factions enjoyable, with the humans being more tactical against you combining various vehicles and troop types, while the trigents are more aggressive, beefier, and damaging while displaying less coordination or strategy

FC3...weird, cartoonish graphics, killing majestic animals to make handbags, picking flowers to make potions, spending your whole life in menus crafting, seeing enemies through walls...I can see why the general public was so wowed with this crap. Coz that's the general public for you. But FC2 is the best game. FC1 also good. From FC3 and beyond...playable...but lame.

Farcry 1 is my favorite
I love how cheesy it is. Which is what Farcry should be. Many of their best games have been cheesy action fun. And the linear feel of it is fun

Finally completed it right now and yes it's quite good. Far cry 2 was my first and i love the series.

this is my fav far cry, i detested far cry 2, and would never play far cry primal

Unfortunately the terminator AI makes this game unplayable today. It might be an issue with modern hardware as ive encountered in other old games that are not properly modded.

In Instincts, the villain Crowe gets feral abilities too. Just thought I'd add that.

It's Far Cry 2 > Far Cry > Far Cry 3 > Crysis > Bart Simpson vs the Space Mutants > Far Cry XYZ

Obviously 🤔

Far Cry was the Crysis of it's day, not coincidentally by kind of the same guys.
It was viewed as an incredible leap in fidelity without sacricing, neigh, even increasing player freedom and scope.
And it was a bit scary back then.
Just a bit.
8/9 yr old me who played SH 2 & 3 and beat Manhunt and The Suffering didn't like to play this one alone

One of the funnest games ever!

to sum it all up, its a different type of farcry than the rest of the franchise cause it was made by Crytek. Ubisoft then bought the farcry name and started making the game by themselves.

I always prefered Far Cry Instincts and Evolution. Far Cry was an incredible game for the time but Instincts had better gameplay with the feral powers and multiplayer, better voice acting too.

You can only judge a game in the context of the time when it was released, back in 2004 Far Cry was one of, if not THE most mindblowing shooter when it was released.

@blasty137

I still have original far cry installed. I ended up removing all the monsters and visit frequently to enjoy the scenery and shoot the occasional enemy.

@FrenchCreekFilms

I loved all the “Big 3” shooters from -04 (HL2, Doom 3 and Far Cry) but I probably enjoyed FC the most of them. I didn't hate the trigens or the more linear underground base levels at all. This game felt like a journey to me!

You're kind of missing some of the point of the gunplay in your points from 12:35 to about 13:40. The lack of iron sights isn't an issue for unscoped guns because the M4 and the MP5SD both have single shot select fire (same button as switching to grenade launcher) which significantly reduces the spread on the reticule. The M4 will one shot headshot the early game mercenaries in the head and is practically pin point accurate from a far distance. In fact, the MP5SD is also accurate to quite a far distance with single shot and can 2 shot early mercenaries. Burst firing to the head is also super effective to decent ranges especially when prone. This is because lying prone not only reduces your sway but also reduces the spread. This is super useful with the G36 and the later scoped assault rifle since they can be shot full auto very accurately even at a distance (but obviously not as far as the sniper) when you're prone in contrast to their poor accuracy when standing.

At 11:00 is an example of when you should probably be using single shots and both the M4 and the MP5SD would be effective at that range with single shots. In fact, the scoped weapons are arguably less effective at that range because they don't have a single shot fire mode. You also say the game has a lean feature you "can" use but honestly you "should" use it's extremely effective and not using it would just make the game way harder.

As a minor point, I don't agree that customisation would be beneficial to the game it would just make certain guns redundant since each weapon has its own purpose.. Maybe apart from the second scoped AR which is just the G36 but better. But yeah, I 100% agree the trigen suck and the bullet (and rocket) sponge big trigens with rocket launcher hands make certain sections of the game significantly harder than they ought to be. Like that fun bit where you're in a cargo elevator and have to fight two of them, each one blocking one of the two only paths you can take.

@arransykes9465

why did you turn the blood off? for youtube? the blood effects and wound decals are SO satisfying in this game.

@InternetZeitgeist-ky7iy

No 1 was The best of all the Far Cry games no 2 was repetitive and boring and the rest were for consoles rather than computers but no 3 was good

@leongt1954
@

i liked it better than the bland shooters it turned into later.

I like when the player is given the first strike opportunity in combat arenas. In most single player campaigns the enemies just pop immediately alerted and attacking you. You never see enemies in their inactive state.
Sure, they might all become alerted once you start shooting them but the combat engagement itself is up to you, the player. You choose the attack location and strategy.
