We Went to the BEST Zoo in America | Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium

I was lucky enough to give the sea lion, penguins and other talks. Fun place to work but summers were HoT!!!

Today I am going on a field trip to that zoo

Take my kids there multiple times a year and you showed some things I’ve never seen. They have their favorite animals so that’s what we visit, lots of “we’ll just see it next time” but we never do.

When there's a line that long for the butterfly exhibit you know you came on a busy day

I kind of miss bear canyon but I’m so glad they got rid of the cat complex and have an actual habitat for the cats there ❤️ the Desert Dome/ Kingdom of the Night and the Lied Jungle will always be my favorites to visit

The newest addition to the zoo is a complete state of the art hospital and research facility for the ah mals. Veterinary students can even do a rotation at this hospital.

I’ve been to butterfly world down in Coconut Creek, Florida, where they have the largest butterfly garden and butterfly exhibits in the world. Real colorful butterflies not the moths or whatever brown flying butterflies they have here. I don’t mean to be negative about the butterfly closure. The zoo is very unique. I’ve been to zoos in New York ,Chicago, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Florida. Parrot jungle, monkey jungle, Gatorland, aquariums from South Florida to Tampa Bay to the aquarium in Chicago.
It’s a unique zoo.
There’s a lot of exhibit areas there is no animals in. The desert dome pathway is a nightmare because everybody’s bottlenecking up while they’re looking in exhibits trying to figure out if there’s even anything in it. That pathway is so narrow barely 2 people can stand side-by-side on the path.
Very unique how it goes down the hill. Bad point is nobody wants to walk up the hill that way the zoo can make more money on each person and bring you up after you’ve paid for each person to go back up the hill. 😂😂
I am not from Nebraska. This is just my opinion on the zoo, but I guess you gotta do something because there’s not a whole lot to do around here. That’s not from my words. This is from people that live around Nebraska and have lived their whole lives in Nebraska have told me there is absolutely nothing to do here. They asked why we came here.😂😂😂😂

Went there when I was a baby before I could remember anything. Then went there for a 6th grade field trip and can actually remember it lol. That was 11 years ago now so it’s interesting to see what’s changed or hasn’t.

Thanks for visiting the Henry doorly zoo it's one of my favorites as well. Some amazing exhibits that really put you into the ecosystem of particular species and culture and types of wildlife

As a native of Omaha I love our zoo so much. So many memories.

I love having a pass so I can go throughout the year. I went last year a week after my son was born just to get some exercise.

For the best experience! Enter the north entrance, head toward the sea lions, then gorilla valley, at the end of gorilla valley you take the elevators up toward the main entrance, see the desert dome, aquarium and jungle, then head toward the elephants and go around counter clockwise. If you go the opposite way it is a TON of uphill. Like the entire time

Our Sioux Falls Zoo has a red panda, too. For a fee, you can have a meet and greet with it!

I moved to Omaha in 2005 and try to go a couple times a year but have had a couple years I didn't make it. My wife and I get a season pass just to support the zoo even if we can't go as they are always adding, updating and improving. I have also been to zoos all over the world and Omaha is definitely the nicest I have been to. Sometimes we go when they do the nights for adults only.

I was born and raised in Lincoln, NE but have been to many zoos. I heard you mention San Diego but what about the Kansas City Zoo? I don't recall if they have an aquarium. It's been awhile since I was at that one. My fave part of Henry Doorley is the aquarium. I could sit in the tunnel for hours!!

I liked it better 30 to 40 years ago. There is a tension between making the animals comfortable and giving the visitor a good viewing experience. Of course it is important to make the animal comfortable, but I feel they repeatedly error on the side of giving the visitor a bad viewing experience. Many animals you can't see because it is so dark, but you can see them at other Zoos where they didn't make it so dark. The distance between exhibits is impractical - too much walking. Some exhibits (such as for the Lions) seem to be designed so you are not likely to see them. The aquarium is good. Lincoln NE has a small "children's zoo", but for every animal that is at both, the viewing experience is better at the Lincoln zoo.

I have a lot of fond childhood memories of that Zoo, the indoor rainforest and the desert dome are what I would recommend!
