I'm an opioid addict.

The withdrawal is probably the worst pain a human can experience. Everything feels unbearable and you feel utterly frantic. You feel frantic to do something to make it better but nothing helps. I tried everything during withdrawal when I couldn't get opioids and even drinking two bottles of wine didn't even make a dent in it. You're also just in a lot of pain (called opioid-induced hyperalgesia) and feel incredibly sick. It's genuinely the worst experience ever. Minutes feel like hours and hours feel like days. Time feels like your enemy because you're just frantically waiting to get better.

It gets better though. It takes your brain about two years to fully recover from your addiction. It's not like you're in constant high-intensity withdrawal (which ends in a few days after quitting) as much as you just have high cravings and life feels dull. Eventually, you get better and are able to experience life as you did before the opioids. It gets better. There are also drugs that can help, namely, Suboxone which itself is an opioid but doesn't really get you high and also blocks other opioids so you can't even get high. Some groups like AA or NA often discourage people from getting opioid-replacement medications but the data is pretty clear that the people taking Suboxone are ultimately better off. Point is: don't let those groups try to give you medical advice because they're all about dogma and doctrine as opposed to evidence-based reasoning.

If you're struggling with opioids, you can do this. It's not an easy road and you'll likely hit speed-bumps but it's more than possible to leave them behind. Even if it feels impossible (I know it did for me), you can do it. You don't have to be a statistic. You don't have to let these drugs control your life. You can be the one in control and it's okay to get help. Nobody found success in fighting addiction by doing it all alone. I believe in you.

I was addicted to opiates. There was a doctor who was trying to help me, but he soon realized i had a problem. I remembef going into the Dr. Office and making a scene because he didnt want to prescribe them to me, he eventually gave me a small prescription just so id leave, This is a apology to the doctor, if you ever read this...im sorry Dr. I wish i remembered your name. Clean from that for over 17 years

I was taking Oxycodone for ten years. I was never so much active.. built a bathroom, did all the plumbing, yard work, and so much more i would impress, lol (says me) ha ha. when i stopped taking it, I fell apart. I also got stoned during the taking of the drug, and if there is any time of "feeling" suicidal" it would be now, (which i am not) but........... I just found and watch this and I just saw the new show that Netflix released, which is “Painkillers”. I had been prescribed and taken hydrocodone thrice, albeit less potent than oxy and are both in the opioid tree. One was for my shingles and the other two were for my teeth extractions. From my personal experience, I never find it addicting but it just feels nice that I’m able to sleep without screaming my head off in pain while I recover. After finishing them, that’s it for me and I never even think about wanting more. When they mentioned dopamine in the video, I remember that I’m also taking antidepressants which also helps with dopamine. My guess would be because my dopamine is stable, my brain is pretty much satisfied with me just treating the pain and not needing that high to get more dopamine

300mg a day codeine for years, fast tapered over 2 weeks 30mg less every two days until I was on 3 x 30mg a day for another week then on last day took 1 x 30mg on the last day then nothing!!!!
When I started taper I took 2 x 1000mg ‘lipsomal vitamin c’ 6 times a day for the whole taper. I’m four days without codeine now and absolutely no withdrawals what so ever. Also Took an Imodium every time I felt the need to go toilet whilst tapering. Everyone’s different just do your research. But whatever you do, just know one day you WILL feel normal again I promise! I don't know if its just me. I'm 50+ with back pain and knee pain, but I refuse pain killers because I need the pain to tell me when my body reaching its limit, so I can prevent from going too far. Taking pain killers shut down that signal, and may cause severe injury not knowing how far I can push.

Opioids patients are being tested if they have exact dosage in their urine as prescribed if they don’t why it is not a law that they have to return it to the pharmacy or dr so they can’t sell it? Or any other addictive med? And why police doesn't have a right to investigate patients in addiction treatment center? So they can report where they got drugs from? If they are in rehab that means they are looking for a treatment aren’t they?
