Software engineering is much more than just sitting behind a computer 8 hours a day and coding. There are increasingly tough responsibilities that software engineers need to take on which is partially why the field has such high salaries and great perks (at least in big tech).

I'm really thinking about doing this as a job. I've been really depressed for the last 4 years and have done nothing with my life. I'm currently 22. This is the only thing I can even think about doing as a career at this point in my life. I often feel too stupid to actually pursue this as a career and maybe it's just low self worth/esteem and my ADHD. I also worry about the 2026 job market, AI and how it'd effect my chances in actually being able to pursue this at some point in my life. I hope things change.

Is it really this easy?
The gap between what people imagine and reality is usually in the details. Most don't realize how much time goes into system design decisions that never make it to production, or how a single API design choice cascades through an entire codebase months later. The debugging and testing phases alone often dwarf the actual feature coding. Worth noting is how much of the job is really about understanding tradeoffs rather than just writing code.

I'm doing the cs50 harvard online course like you said but the first few weeks in i feel as if i don't understand a thing and of course i want to be a software engineer but they say there are many types of them but i don't get it? cause like yeah sure web developer, and these other stuffs but which one do i take? i dont know myself i dont know the benefits the things required for these types of "software engineering" jobs they say, and i just really need some advice. I'm considering going to DeVry or Harper College to go into software development and web development so I can start my own business making my website and sell software on it.
