Intercontinental Ballistic Missile - ICBM. How Ballistic Missile Works & Launch - According to the Federation of American Scientists, a ballistic missile is one that has a ballistic trajectory over most of its flight path. What that means is that once the missile burns up the fuel that propels it, the missile keeps moving, the same way that a bullet does after it's been fired out of a gun. Once the fuel is gone, the missile's direction can't be altered. It follows a path determined by the speed of its launch and the force of gravity trying to pull it back toward the Earth's surface. Eventually, gravity guides the missile โ and its payload.

An Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) is a guided ballistic missile with a minimum range of 5,500 kilometres (3,400 mi) primarily designed for nuclear weapons delivery (delivering one or more thermonuclear warheads). Similarly, conventional, chemical, and biological weapons can also be delivered with varying effectiveness, but have never been deployed on ICBMs. Most modern designs support multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs), allowing a single missile to carry several warheads, each of which can strike a different target.
ICBMs are much faster and have a greater range than other types of ballistic missiles, which include intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBMs), medium-range ballistic missiles (MRBMs), short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) and tactical ballistic missiles (TBMs).

Update : North Korea Unveils Two New Strategic Missiles ( Hwasong-16 ) in October 10 Parade
The new ICBM, presumably a Hwasong-16, appears to be approximately 25-26 m long and 2.5-2.9 m in diameterโabout 4-4.5 m longer and about 0.5 m larger in diameter than the Northโs Hwasong-15 ICBM flight tested once in November 2017. Indeed, the new missile has been correctly characterized as the worldโs largest mobile ICBMโin part because countries with ICBMs generally seek to make their road-mobile ICBMs smaller so they can be more mobile and concealable.

@mranonymous8815Space orbits are relative to earth's gravitational-force(drop-down, hold-altitude geo-orbital, hold-position geo-stationary, hold-altitude again, fling-out to space). Orbits are maintained using zero-thrust.
Re-entry can be sub-sonic, relative to atmosphere air-friction, at various points of decent, to maintain structural-integrity (avoid burn-out).
Trajectories of single-stage (multiple-warheads) can be modified(not with modern sabotaged electronics components) to 3 trajectories plus a final supersonic-hypersonic approach to avoid surface to air missiles.
Trajectory stages,
= sub-sonic launch to save fuel and reduce launch-detection(big flames, big smoke) while keeping missile properly angled to lower air-friction altitude and increase speed as air-friction reduces (supersonic to hypersonic)
= space, use small-thrusters(coarse and fine adjustments) to change trajectory for an orbit that will arrive at a predefined-position in space for - synchronous(one minute window) of desent-re.entry of other missiles to achieve synchronous(one second window) for detonation
= desent-re.entry and accelerate(minimal) as required to use parabolic-trajectory
= final speed up to avoid surface to air missile (supersonic to hypersonic), no trajectory.
Why a ballistic missile works better than a orbital rocket i mean no static fire or anything like that
@MarcianoX89There are many effective methods and devices could be invented to prevent ICBMS. The most effective one would be creating artifical lighting in spontaneous moment towards it. Laser hit also is an effective choice but considering the amount of heat and radiation will be poured down on earth the vacume creating and sucking it down on oceans seemingly is most effective solution. Needs serious elaboration.
