What is Sensorineural Hearing Loss? - Ear Problems

Video Overview & Insights

Doctor of Audiology, Clifford R. Olson, from Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, discusses what the most common type of hearing loss is, what causes it, and what your treatment options are.

My hearing deficiency came about when the passenger 'plane I was travelling in dropped suddenly on approach to the airport. This gave me extreme pain in both ears and from then on I have had hearing problems. It sounds from your video that I must have sensorineural hearing loss. Is this likely? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

I am crying and afraid, i lost 55%

— @ArakanHorror

Over 90% of hearing losses are Sensorineural. Hearing loss can occur in 3 different areas of the ear. The outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear. Sensorineural hearing losses involve the inner ear. More specifically, the cochlea and the Auditory nerve.

When Outer hair cells die, your best treatment option is usually hearing aids.

Guys I webMDd my sudden hearing loss symptoms and freaked myself out to the point of tears thinking I had this, but when I went to the doctor he blasted out a gob of earwax the size of a pebble and I can hear fine now. I’m not saying don’t seek immediate medical attention if you suddenly lose your hearing, definitely do, but if you’re prone to obsessive intrusive thoughts just be positive and don’t freak out, because the odds are way more likely that your ears are just clogged.

— @GregoryHunter-rm4ei

When Inner hair cells die, you may be a candidate for a cochlear implant.

When you have a tumor on your auditory nerve, aka. Acoustic Neuroma, you may need a CROS device or a Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA). In some cases, you may need a brainstem implant if both auditory nerves have tumors.

Always make sure to consult with an Audiologist to determine which type of hearing loss you have and what you should do about it.

How can an audiologist tell if the inner or outer hair cells have died from tone tests?

@Brother-Luke

SSNHL hit me at 2030 26 Jul 24 and by 2100 I was fundamentally deaf in my RIGHT ear. Hearing was greatly diminished but I could turn up the sound system and the perceived midrange and treble was staticky like a wire sparking...bass wasn't right either...boomy for the low volume. Mids to highs sounded ike a blown audio amp causing "clipping" of the audio sine waves resulting in distortion. Since then, I've consumed information on SNHL. The sophisticated hearing test indicated my new R ear ability was 16% of what it had been.

My first Prednisone perfusion (shot thru the eardrum) was on Friday 1 week after the occurrence, another on Monday, and Wednesday and I'm on a 2 week treatment of Prednisone tablets. My ear constantly feels as if it needs to "pop..." and has a "rush noise" in the key of F#. It's aggravating, but livable. Normal everyday sounds come at you from different angles than you're accustomed to, I guarantee!

I feel like I have slight improvement as I'm constantly "experimenting" with it, but I can't rule out wishful thinking.

This video referred to this being a "common" type of HL and I have to say...a consistent statement I see in research it is the relative RARRITY of SNHL...I've seen 5-10 per 10,000 persons up to 20-40 per 100,000 persons. (MedScape, WebMD.) Had I watched this video first, my thoughts would have been, "...this happens to everybody!"

Kudos for him advising to have this seen about immediately...don't wait. My Neuro-otology Dr. gives me 66% chance of regaining a functional amount of hearing.

Allbest!!

I caught COVID 3 months ago and took hearing tests, which led to bilateral SNHL in both ears. Mild in my right and moderate in my left ears. I'm also a musician, and I can't hear high-frequency sounds

Hello Dr,

My nephew has just been diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss. However, he has been complaining of this pain in his ear for 2 years now! No painkillers or spray works and upon MRI examination, the inside of the ears look normal is what all ENT consultants have said.
Where is this pain coming from? It has affected my nephew's life massively and he is on the verge of dropping out of college because of the constant pain. The colder the months get the more he is in pain.

Excellent explanation. I do wear hearing aids now and I have Sensorineural Hearing Loss. I don't recall the audiologist explaining it to me this way. I actually read my health record and see it shows sensorineural hearing loss...although she is very nice, she never explained it to me the way you did in this video.

Great job and thanks so much for this information.

Just a suggestion but in future videos could you talk slower, I cannot hear so I read the closed caption and I had to keep stopping the video every few seconds to have time to read what you just said. Thanks.

I always had excellent hearing, then about 25 years ago when I was in my late forties, overnight I developed SNHL. I went to work as normal and found that I couldn’t hear the telephone clearly in my left ear. I had the phone replaced, but had no improvement. I saw a ENT physician and I learned for the first time about SNHL. He sent me to have an MRI to eliminate the presence of any tumor or other cause (negative), but other than that no treatment options were available. My right ear improved—not to 100 percent—but the left ear continued to get worse. I now wear hearing aids; they have some limitations, which I’m sure is different for everyone. However, today’s technology is great. A side note: I had difficulty hearing, but during the COVID epidemic, trying to hear people who were wearing masks and/or standing behind a plexiglass shield was maddening. I still think everyone mumbles.😊

WOW! That was the clearest explanation of sensorineural hearing loss I've ever been given as a hard-of-hearing hearing aid wearing person. I'm so glad I stumbled onto this one! Other audiologists and hearing instrument specialists should just show everyone this video! Thanks for the explanation, Dr. Cliff!

What hearing aids would you recommend for SNHL?

@Glordness
@

The comment regarding Acoustic Neuroma surgery is incorrect. You will not automatically lose your hearing if you have surgery. In fact, if it’s retro sigmoid or middle fossa surgery, you are more likely to preserve current hearing levels than lose hearing. Yes, still a chance you may lose hearing, but not guaranteed as video suggests.

I'm confused on the Cros hearing device. You said it " sends sounds from your bad ear or the ear that no longer hears and re routes it to you better ear."
How does it pick up sounds from an ear that no longer hears? My better ear already hears things. I'm just not understanding the dynamics of this device.
I'm seeing an audiologist soon and My ENT has recommended this particular device. Please help me understand it more clearly

Thank you

I have an ear infection in one ear and fluid buildup behind the eardrums. I can’t hear very well. I’ve lost about 99% of my hearing. ENT Dr said it could take 6 weeks to drain out and hearing to come back. Anyone else experience this? If so. What did you do to resolve this? How long did it take to get better?

I have been using behind-the-ear hearing aids since I was 4 years old. I was diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss. I have no problem with my speech. I can hear but I don't understand. Is there any way to improve this problem? I don't know. I want to benefit from the knowledge of people who are more experienced than me. I want to connect with people like me. I wonder how their day went. I am the only person I know who wears a hearing aid. No one understands my problem.

English is not my mother tongue. I used a translation program, sorry for my mistake.

I am 48. On 31/08/2021, after a short afternoon nap, I suddenly could no longer hear from my right ear. The conduit to the tympan had been swollen for a couple of days but nothing serious. I went to the ER and diagnosis was otitis (there was redness surrounding the tympan) with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drops for 5 days. No change. In the shower, could not feel the water jet hitting my tympan. It was that bad. Went back to the ER. Now prescribed oral antibiotics for 5 days. Amoxicillin. No change. Finally went to my GP who diagnosed SSHL and immediately put on oral steroids by an ENT specialist for 10 days 60mg of Prednisone. I did get more flexibility in the ear but no change as to my hearing. Oral steroids were extended for another 4 days at the same dosage and tapered for 3 days. No change. First injection into the ear via the tympan. 1 week later no change. Audio still shows -60 to 80 db for lower frequencies and between -60db and -120db for higher frequencies. Now on a further 7 days of oral steroids, 60mg Prednisone. No change. Absolutely devastated. A buzzing noise in my ear outside when there is a lot of traffic. And it feels blocked. Still clinging to hope but time is against me....

Dr. Cliff, I have been following your videos intently the last few weeks. I have been experiencing terrible diplacusis. Being a professional violinist and Orchestras teacher this has been a frustrating, discouraging and difficult time. Can you shed any light on the possible cause, treatment that you know of? Additionally, since December of 2020 I have lost nearly all hearing in my right ear. It's very odd because the degree to which I can hear changes day by day and even with in a given day
