What Is the Autism Spectrum?

Video Overview & Insights

Autism spectrum disorder is called that for a reason. There's a huge range of experiences that fall under the diagnosis. So here’s what we know today about the entire spectrum of autism—where it comes from, how to recognize it, and how it's treated.

Autism is genetic

Why wasn’t occupational therapy discussed?? Sensory regulation and sensory integration is a HUGE part of treating symptoms associated with autism not to mention that OT literally teaches adaptations for activities of daily living- and deficits in activities of daily living was mentioned MULTIPLE times. I’m a little disappointed in as is how for leaving out OT.

There is such a thing as white Hispanics. Hispanic has absolutely nothing to do with race. It is a colonial cultural reference. That is all. Any study that treats Hispanic as a race is using the word incorrectly. Hispanic is not biological. It does not describe how a person looks. It does not refer to skin tone or color. It does not mean “Spanish-speaking.” How can you call yourself a science show if you do not understand the basic fact that Hispanic is not a race? If you fail to research and correct for these grotesque errors, you are miseducating the public.

This video was good up until the end. ABA is literally just conversion therapy but for autistic people instead of LGBTQ people. "Success" in ABA is based on how well we can act like a neurotypical person, but does not look at the autistic person's quality of life at all. It is abusive and immoral, and speaking on it in a neutral manner like was done in this video is objectively harmful.

ABA is the only "treatment" for autism because it's all insurance wants to pay for. Real treatment and support requires a multidisciplinary team. Talk/Play therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, maybe a psychiatrist or psychologist. Aba tries to group everything into one big group and it just fails. Aba is about control not help.

I had to learn how to avoid jumping to fast conclusions when being treated differently than other people get treated becasue I am neurodivergent too when not fitting into any stereotypes. For example the other day when not taking the elevator and instead taking the escalator when carrying my small shopping cart up off the escalator treads with my left arm so I could hang onto the right rail the whole time going up. A man who looked a lot younger than me following close behind me lightly pushed me on my back while I was in the process of swinging my shopping cart around to my left arm instead of my right as I was about to board the escalator at the time. Did he think I was loosing my ballace at the time and so he had to keep me standing up or was it because of a dark ulterior motive long after someone on that same escalator had died when trying to use it many months before then. Who knows. Who cares.

All the behavioral therapy and shrink sessions my mother put me through did nothing to change my behavior to act like everybody else.

I learned how to behave from TV, for better or for worse since I am very expressive and have a thick american accent and tone of voice despite being Israeli.
On TV, everybody is different and they aren't afraid to show it, and I related to that even if I didin't know I did.

Saying "white" is insensitive. You should use the phrase "European American" instead.

First: English isnt my 1st or even 2nd language so I apollegize if my spelling being bad and message gets lost in translation or seem ranty.

Second: So I was late diagnosed with autism, a little over 12 years ago when my social worker refered to me a doctor for testing. The thing is that I dont feel like my fellow autists in my autism support group(we are about 31 +- memebers at the moment), I understand there are varying "levels" on the spectrum but man I feel like an outsider, I bad socially, but not even in the same ball park as the others from the group. I'm sensitive to light and noices and I hyper fictate and I have been practicing "masks" since i was 12(on my own accord since I at that point had noticed that I was diffrent to the other kids) , but again no where near anyone in my group. I feel like live in a gray zone inbetween, I'm too autistic to function propper with non nerodirverse people, but too well functioning too function with my fellow autists in the group. Was working as a sort of middle man and primus motor for the group for awhile(5 years give or take) but this got too overwhelming since both sides, the people I interpreted for and too, just started to relay too much on me, like when parents use their kid/mutual freind to bring messages to one another when they are fighting over an argument. I crashed so hard that I'm now considered too "disabled" for work.
I only really function as a moderator on our forum and discord now and that is due to some of them sometimes posts troublesome/disturbing/unsettling things for the rest of the members. Like a suprisingly high amount of oure younger members(age about range 16-25) wanting a dictatorship, so they wont have to deal with voteing, shifting government and the "chaos" of everyday life in a changing world, where the older members wanting personal freedoms and fear that they will be pointed out or used as a topic of hate by politicians. We also have non neurodivergent moderators(goverment assigned social workers and parents), but most of them are older and not too confortable with IT, so they mostly do what they always do, which is to relay on me and two other group memebers to tag them in posts that requires authority/parental guidence, its exhausting to be honest.
Feels like I "evolved"(sorry if i used the word wrong)/was brought up to be a bridge person between neurodivergent and non neurodivergent people while not being seen by anyone one belonging. I even travled around, and that was a biiiig stress factor, to other autism groups too see if it was just my local group I didnt get a sense of "belonging" to, with the same negative results. I even tried special interrests clubs, like warhammer fantasy and 40k, roleplay and such hobbies, since i have a like for those things, but still the feeling of being and outsider remains.
Got tested for ADHD and Schizophrenia, but the doc said that the test results didnt match so thats a deadend. I also got told to look up imposter syndrom, but it didnt really fit me enough to be considered.

So with that being said is there a word for what I am? A word or words to make is easier to explain to people my struggles without turning conversation into an essay about the diffrences between me and other people on the spectrum.

Third: I liked the video

Kind regards
Z

Nonononono, "Autism Avenue" was not where you'd gone too far with the metaphor, it's where you bailed from the metaphor way too early!

i just read a school case in my country about the exact same thing scishow talk about at 17:40. The kid was 15, diagnosed child autism and had a bad reaction when the teacher took the ipad away after a confrontation with another classmate. Kicking, screaming, biting, scratching, throwing anything, spitting, death threats and a complete loss of self was the reaction. It ended with 3 teacher sitting on him for 30min until he calmed down. Been a bit of talk afterwords about how the situation should have been handled since the kid obviously can't be around that teacher anymore. And if it was ok to restrain him with force like that. His parents are not happy how the situation was handled by the school either. The school just pass it like nothing, implying that all kids need to be put in place at some point.

Thank you for the video. If you are willing and able, would you mind doing a related video on Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy (MeRT)? I stumbled on a video on the subject from an episode of The Doctors and the subject has piqued my curiosity as a parent of a non-verbal autistic child regarding its benefits and, of course, long term side effects. Thanks again.
